The late 1890s saw the start of a 'heroic age' in polar exploration. This book tells the story of three men who were to embody the spirit of the time-- Amundsen and Ernest Shackleton. This new revised edition will be thoroughly revised throughout and contain a new introduction to reflect new research and discoveries regarding these expeditions as well as more recent attempts in travelling to the Pole, in addition to containing new images from the Royal Museums Greenwich Collection.

Metaphysische und religiöse Gotteserkenntnis
Anna Piazza unternimmt eine systematische und hermeneutische Analyse der Religionsphänomenologie Max Schelers, mit spezieller Betrachtung der Werke Schelers zwischen den Jahren 1912-1921. Ihre Arbeit beleuchtet insbesondere das Problem der Einheit zwischen der metaphysischen und religiösen Gotteserkenntnis auf der Basis der Anwendung der phänomenologischen Methode. Somit wird die Religionsphilosophie Schelers in Zusammenhang mit seiner früheren Phänomenologie ausgelegt. Die Erkenntnisbasis liefert bisher unveröffentlichtes Material (Manuskripte, Typoskripte, Vorlesungen Schelers), das hier erstmals systematisch ausgewer-tet und analysiert wird, um so ein klareres Licht auf bestimmte Interpretationsprobleme zu werfen und Lösungsansätze anzubieten.

Gibt es eine materiale Ethik, die gleichwohl a priori ist in dem Sinne, daß ihre Sätze evident sind und durch Beobachtung und Induktion weder nachweisbar noch widerlegbar? Gibt es materiale ethische Intuitionen? Max Scheler Das Buch widmet sich der frühen phänomenologischen Ethik von Max Scheler und Edmund Husserl in ihrem Verhältnis zur philosophischen Tradition, vor allem zu Kant. Dabei rückt der Begriff des Apriori ins Zentrum, und es geht darum zu zeigen, wie hier das Apriori als ein sowohl materiales als auch als ein emotionales bestimmt wird. Mit diesem Konzept eines emotionalen materialen Apriori bietet Schelers Ethik eine Lösung für den seit Sokrates und Protagoras andauernden Streit zwischen einer Vernunftethik einerseits und einer Gefühlsethik andererseits. Bei der sich sodann aufdrängenden Frage, inwiefern Schelers Ethik als eine phänomenologische Metaethik zu verstehen ist, geht es vor allem um Schelers Bestimmung dessen, was das Gute sei, und um die Grundlegung, die in die Lage versetzt, auf diese Frage eine Antwort zu formulieren.
