The Growing Power of Japan, 1967-1972
'The years 1967-72 were particularly significant ones for modern Japan and need to be understood by anyone trying to comprehend the way Japan has developed since and assess its future course. Japan was becoming an increasingly important world power. Its economy was growing fast and its leaders and people were displaying renewed self-confidence. These were the years before growth turned to bubble and over-confidence, but unbridled economic development had led to serious environmental damage. 'Concentrated and torrential Japanese exports', as they were termed by some foreign observers, were damaging foreign industries and stimulating protectionist pressures. Japan was reaching a turning point in international relations. 1971 was the year in which the firstever state visit abroad by a Japanese emperor took place. 1972 saw the return of Okinawa to Japanese rule.'

Patrick White Beyond the Grave
Patrick White (1912–1990) won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1973 and remains one of Australia's most celebrated writers. Robyn Nevin, Patrick White and the art of the modern in Australian theatre
Patrick White’s love of the theatre began early in life and he especially enjoyed the company of actors. He wrote roles for specific actors, such as Kerry Walker and Max Cullen, frequently made recommendations to directors as to which actors should play particular parts in his plays, and spent long periods at rehearsals observing quietly. At times, he was overcome with emotion as the actors worked. White also famously ‘took up’ a few Australian actors and cultivated their friendship, notably Walker and Kate Fitzpatrick.
Perhaps more than any other actor, Robyn Nevin brought White’s modernist theatricality to life in her extraordinary portrayal of Miss Docker in Jim Sharman’s production of A Cheery Soul in 1979. H.G. Kippax described Nevin’s performance as ‘dazzling’, referring to the production as both ‘spectacular and poetic’. This article considers Robyn Nevin in the context of theatrical modernism and the plays of Patrick White. Nevin’s range is wide and her capacity for comic acting is particularly versatile. Nevin’s comic acting in White’s plays demonstrates her contribution to an Australian style of acting that is evident in the work of Nevin as well as in that of Walker and Cullen. This style of acting, developed in Australia with directors John Bell, Rex Cramphorn and Jim Sharman, has powerfully shaped our understanding of White’s plays and modernist drama, allowing a new perspective on aesthetic modernism. The article focuses on the constellation of White, Sharman and Nevin in creating the landmark production of A Cheery Soul in 1979.

Patrick White and the agency of literary masks
Prominent in the final works of Patrick White, the Australian 1973 Nobel Prize laureate, is a vital admission of one’s inevitable dependence on one’s community. Yet how can a writer not only convey this message but also rally his readers towards a recognition of this notion? Moreover, how can a writer reach out of the pages to promote a change of mores in a society generally devoted to the pursuit of glorified, romantic individualism? A close reading of White’s last works points to his use of literary mask-narratives, and particularly mask-characters that embody and reflect social values while being debunked themselves at the same time. By activating these characters, the readers become responsible participants of the outcome of these characters’ actions, and may perhaps view them differently, enough to lead to an eventual alteration of the values they exhibit.
