كانت المراسلات بين طبيب الأعصاب النمساوي الشهير سيغموند فرويد وعالم النفس السويسري ومؤسس علم النفس التحليلي كارل يونغ، جمعت في كتاب نشرته لأول مرة مطبعة جامعة برينستون عام 1974 وهو يجمع 360 رسالة كتبها الرجلان لبعضهما من 1906 حتى افتراقهما بحلول عام 1914 إلى غير رجعة فهذه المراسلات بين فرويد ويونغ هي الشاهد والدليل المباشر للقاء المثمر للغاية والمأساوي في نهاية المطاف، بين رجلين عظيمين فالمأساة تكمن في اللقاء نفسه، في المجرى المثير للمراسلات الذي يتحرك وفق نموذج كلاسيكي على نحو لا هوادة فيه صوب نهايته فلا سيرة فرويد الجديدة ولا سيرة يونغ الجديدة تغيرت تغيرا على نحو حاسم، على أن كليهما استمد بواعث خلقة من صداقتهما ومن نهايتها المحزنة المرة خلافا للملاحظات المهذبة المجدية على منشوراتهما التي تبادلاها عن طريق المراسلة في أثناء تلك الفترة، وخلافا لكل شيء كتباه عن بعضهما البعض بعد القطيعة، تظهر الرسائل التأثيرات المتبادلة المعقدة التي جرت بين كلا الصديقين اللذين كانا مختلفين غاية الاختلاف عن بعضهما واللذين شعرا بأن كلا منهما منجذب إلى الآخر انجذابا شديدا فمحاورتهما تدعو بصراحة إلى تفسير يقوم على التحليل والتحليل النفسي، كما تدعو أيضا إلى تفكير عميق في نشوء الصداقة وتأثيراتها ومضمونها ومآلها وتدعو إلى بروز كل ما تضمنته هذه العلاقة من اعتداءات وإسقاطات، من سماحة ومذمة، من ومضات فكرية ومعلومات تنبئ عن المستقبل وبعض الأشياء الأخرى التي يحلو لها أن توضع في كفة الميزان.
