The official history of the Falklands Campaign
2004,2007
Drawing on a vast range of previously classified government archives as well as interviews with key participants, this first volume of the official history of the Falklands Campaign is the most authoritative account of the origins of the 1982 war. In the first chapters the author analyzes the long history of the dispute between Argentina and Britain over the sovereignty of the Islands, the difficulties faced by successive governments in finding a way to reconcile the opposed interests of the Argentines and the islanders, and the constant struggle to keep the Islands viable. He subsequently gives a complete account of how what started as an apparently trivial incident over an illegal landing by scrap-metal merchants on the island of South Georgia turned into a major crisis. Thanks to his access to classified material, Lawrence Freedman has been able to produce a detailed and authoritative analysis which extends the coverage given by the Franks Committee Report of 1983. This volume is ultimately an extremely readable account of these events, charting the growing realization within the British government of the seriousness of the situation, culminating in the Argentine invasion of the Falkland Islands at the start of April 1982.

\We, the Barbarians\
2024
\"We, the Barbarians\" embarks on a careful and exhaustive
reading of three of the most prominent authors in the latest wave
of Mexican fiction: Yuri Herrera, Fernanda Melchor, and Valeria
Luiselli. Originally published in Mexico in 2021, this work is
divided into three parts, one for each author's narrative
production. The book analyzes all of the literary works published
by Herrera, Melchor, and Luiselli from the beginning of their
writing careers until 2021, allowing for a diachronic
interpretation of their respective narrative projects as well as
for comparative approaches to their aesthetic and ideological
contours. Characterized by the fragmentation of civil society and
the decomposition of the myths that accompanied the consolidation
of the modern nation, Mexican visual and literary arts have
explored a myriad of representational avenues to approach the
phenomena of violence, institutional decay, and political
instability. The critical and theoretical approaches in \"We,
the Barbarians\" explore a variety of alternative symbolic
representations of topics such as nationalism, community, and
affect in times impacted by systemic violence, precariousness, and
radical inequality. Moraña perceives the negotiations between
regional/local imaginaries and global scenarios characterized by
the devaluation and resignification of life, both at individual and
collective levels. Though it uses three authors as its focus, this
book seeks to more broadly theorize the question of the
relationship between literature and the social in the twenty-first
century.
Tasmania
2024
\"After losing the future he imagined for himself, a writer sets out in search of connection and purpose at a tipping point with climate change and global conflict, in this breathtaking novel from the Strega Prize-winning author of The Solitude of Prime Numbers. In late 2015, Paolo feels his life coming apart: While his wife, Lorenza, has decided to give up on pregnancy after years of trying, he clings to the dream of becoming a father, not just a father figure to Lorenza's son. As their marriage strains, Paolo immerses himself in work, traveling to Paris to report on the UN Climate Change Conference in the wake of terrorist attacks that shook the world. His journalism dovetails with a book he hopes to write on the atomic bomb and its survivors, a growing obsession that will take him to cities across Europe and ultimately Japan. Along the way, Paolo interacts with a vibrant cast of characters, each struggling to find their own Tasmania, a safe haven in which to weather the coming crises-global warming, pandemics, authoritarian governments, and wars. He develops a friendship with a brilliant, opinionated physicist, who followed the scientific path Paolo had abandoned, and who will test Paolo's loyalty and values. A stunning return to fiction after How Contagion Works, Paolo Giordano's semi-autobiographical novel captures the fear, anxiety, wonder, and beauty of this time of uncertainty and upheaval, exploring how we can create and maintain relationships with other people when it feels increasingly difficult to connect\"-- Provided by publisher.

Equality of opportunity is about leveling the playing field so that circumstances such as gender, ethnicity, place of birth, or family background do not influence a person's life chances. Success in life should depend on people's choices, effort and talents, not to their circumstances at birth. 'Measuring Inequality of Opportunities in Latin America and the Caribbean' introduces new methods for measuring inequality of opportunities and makes an assessment of its evolution in Latin America over a decade. An innovative Human Opportunity Index and other parametric and non-parametric techniques are presented for quantifying inequality based on circumstances exogenous to individual efforts. These methods are applied to gauge inequality of opportunities in access to basic services for children, learning achievement for youth, and income and consumption for adults.
