Amy Winehouse left an indelible mark on both the music industry and pop culture with her soulful voice and bold 60s-inspired aesthetic. Featuring stories and anecdotes from a wide range of characters connected to Amy, specially commissioned photography of memorabilia, styled and dressed themed sets incorporating Amy's clothing, possessions, and lyrics, and previously unseen archival images, this volume presents an intimate portrait that celebrates Amy's creative legacy. Interspersed throughout are personal reflections on Amy's life and work, provided by her friends, colleagues, and fans. These include Ronnie Spector, Vivienne Westwood, Bryan Adams, Little Simz, and Carl Barât, as well as Doug Landlord of the Hawley Arms, tattooist Henry Hate, goddaughter Dionne Bromfield, and DJ Bioux. Each one has a personal story to share, and together their anecdotes and reflections build into a complex picture of a much admired but troubled star. Vice Culture Editor Emma Garland puts these insights into context with an introduction that highlights the principal events and achievements in Amy's life and work, and the key characters that played a part in it. Organized broadly chronologically, the book features newly shot lyric sheets, sketches, and ephemera together with contextual photographs and video stills, including album, single, and promotional artworks and outtakes. Punctuating the story are photographs of dressed room sets each created, designed, and styled especially for the book by Naomi Parry to evoke a period or aspect of Amy's life or personality, incorporating Amy's clothing, possessions, lyrics, and other memorabilia.

The story of a brief marriage
\"Two and a half decades into a devastating civil war, Sri Lanka's Tamil minority is pushed inexorably towards the coast by the advancing army. Amongst the evacuees is Dinesh, whose world has contracted to a makeshift camp where time is measured by the shells that fall around him like clockwork. Alienated from family, home, language, and body, he exists in a state of mute acceptance, numb to the violence around him, till he is approached one morning by an old man who makes an unexpected proposal: that Dinesh marry his daughter, Ganga. Marriage, in this world, is an attempt at safety, like the beached fishing boat under which Dinesh huddles during the bombings. As a couple, they would be less likely to be conscripted to fight for the rebels, and less likely to be abused in the case of an army victory. Thrust into this situation of strange intimacy and dependence, Dinesh and Ganga try to come to terms with everything that has happened, hesitantly attempting to awaken to themselves and to one another before the war closes over them once more.\" -- Back cover.

2021
The essays in this book examine the arguments and rhetoric used by the United States and the USSR following two catastrophes that impacted both countries, as blame is cast and consequences are debated. In this environment, it was perhaps inevitable that conspiracy theories would arise, especially about the downing of Korean Air Lines Flight 007 over the Sea of Japan. Those theories are examined, resulting in at least one method for addressing conspiracy arguments. In the case of Chernobyl, the disaster ruptured the \"social compact\" between the Soviet government and the people; efforts to overcome the resulting disillusionment quickly became the focus of state efforts.

\We, the Barbarians\
2024
\"We, the Barbarians\" embarks on a careful and exhaustive
reading of three of the most prominent authors in the latest wave
of Mexican fiction: Yuri Herrera, Fernanda Melchor, and Valeria
Luiselli. Originally published in Mexico in 2021, this work is
divided into three parts, one for each author's narrative
production. The book analyzes all of the literary works published
by Herrera, Melchor, and Luiselli from the beginning of their
writing careers until 2021, allowing for a diachronic
interpretation of their respective narrative projects as well as
for comparative approaches to their aesthetic and ideological
contours. Characterized by the fragmentation of civil society and
the decomposition of the myths that accompanied the consolidation
of the modern nation, Mexican visual and literary arts have
explored a myriad of representational avenues to approach the
phenomena of violence, institutional decay, and political
instability. The critical and theoretical approaches in \"We,
the Barbarians\" explore a variety of alternative symbolic
representations of topics such as nationalism, community, and
affect in times impacted by systemic violence, precariousness, and
radical inequality. Moraña perceives the negotiations between
regional/local imaginaries and global scenarios characterized by
the devaluation and resignification of life, both at individual and
collective levels. Though it uses three authors as its focus, this
book seeks to more broadly theorize the question of the
relationship between literature and the social in the twenty-first
century.

Real estate—housing in particular—is a less profitable investment in the long run than previously thought. We hand-collect property-level financial data for the institutional real estate portfolios of four large Oxbridge colleges over the period 1901–1983. Gross income yields initially fluctuate around 5%, but then trend downward (upward) for agricultural and residential (commercial) real estate. Long-term real income growth rates are close to zero for all property types. Our findings imply annualized real total returns, net of costs, ranging from approximately 2.3% for residential to 4.5% for agricultural real estate.

Multidimensional Change in Sudan (1989-2011)
2015,2022
Based on fieldwork largely collected during the CPA interim period by Sudanese and European researchers, this volume sheds light on the dynamics of change and the relationship between microscale and macroscale processes which took place in Sudan between the 1980s and the independence of South Sudan in 2011. Contributors' various disciplinary approaches-socio-anthropological, geographical, political, historical, linguistic-focus on the general issue of \"access to resources.\" The book analyzes major transformations which affected Sudan in the framework of globalization, including land and urban issues; water management; \"new\" actors and \"new conflicts\"; and language, identity, and ideology.
