Bhopal's ecological gothic
Studies the cultural texts--fiction, protest effigies, photographs, films, reportage, eyewitness accounts, campaign posters and reports--produced around the world's worst industrial disaster: the Bhopal tragedy of 1984. It makes a case for an ecological perspective, wherein the city, its landscape and its people are Gothicized. After presenting the history of the disaster in terms of negligence, the book examines the coverage of the events as well as accounts by eyewitnesses and survivors, and the remnants, in various forms, of the disaster - the haunting - within human bodies and nature. On Empson
Are literary critics writers? As Michael Wood says, \"Not all critics are writers--perhaps most of them are not--and some of them are better when they don't try to be.\" The British critic and poet William Empson (1906-84), one of the most important and influential critics of the twentieth century, was an exception--a critic who was not only a writer but also a great one. Strategic roadmap for an early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease based on biomarkers
The diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease can be improved by the use of biological measures. Biomarkers of functional impairment, neuronal loss, and protein deposition that can be assessed by neuroimaging (ie, MRI and PET) or CSF analysis are increasingly being used to diagnose Alzheimer's disease in research studies and specialist clinical settings. However, the validation of the clinical usefulness of these biomarkers is incomplete, and that is hampering reimbursement for these tests by health insurance providers, their widespread clinical implementation, and improvements in quality of health care. We have developed a strategic five-phase roadmap to foster the clinical validation of biomarkers in Alzheimer's disease, adapted from the approach for cancer biomarkers. Sufficient evidence of analytical validity (phase 1 of a structured framework adapted from oncology) is available for all biomarkers, but their clinical validity (phases 2 and 3) and clinical utility (phases 4 and 5) are incomplete. To complete these phases, research priorities include the standardisation of the readout of these assays and thresholds for normality, the evaluation of their performance in detecting early disease, the development of diagnostic algorithms comprising combinations of biomarkers, and the development of clinical guidelines for the use of biomarkers in qualified memory clinics.

News Shocks under Financial Frictions
We examine the dynamic effects of TFP news shocks in the context of frictions in financial markets. We document two new facts. First, a shock to future TFP generates a significant decline in credit spread indicators along with a robust improvement in credit supply indicators. Second, we establish a tight link between TFP news shocks and shocks that explain the majority of un-forecastable movements in credit spread indicators. A DSGE model enriched with a financial sector of the Gertler-Kiyotaki-Karadi type generates very similar quantitative dynamics.

Overcoming the legal and regulatory barriers to drug repurposing
Drug repurposing has been proposed as a strategy to develop new therapies that has fewer risks, lower costs and shorter timelines than developing completely new drugs. However, the potential of this strategy has not been as widely realized as hoped, in part owing to legal and regulatory barriers. Here, we highlight these barriers and consider how they could be overcome.

The Impact of Childhood Social Skills and Self-Control Training on Economic and Noneconomic Outcomes
A childhood intervention to improve the social skills and self-control of at-risk kindergarten boys in the 1980s had positive impacts over the life course: higher trust and self-control as adolescents; increased social group membership, education, and reduced criminality as young adults; and increased marriage and employment as adults. Using administrative data, we find this intervention increased average yearly employment income by about 20 percent and decreased average yearly social transfers by almost 40 percent. We estimate that $1 invested in this program around age 8 yields about $11 in benefits by age 39, with an internal rate of return of around 17 percent.
