This edited volume seeks to bring to light the impact of the ‘new’ Kubrick studies upon the ‘old’ Kubrick studies and collate together original insights, and textual and interpretative analyses of 2001: A Space Odyssey. By revising the formalist approaches in Kubrick Studies and conflating it with new empirical approaches, we can arrive at a broader understanding of the means and ways in which Kubrick’s methods as a director were developed to create a unique aesthetic creation and a film that changed cinematic language radically. Approaching the 50th anniversary of its release, 2001’s reputation is cemented as one of the greatest and most influential films ever made, regularly appearing in polls of the most important movies. And the film is still years ahead in its design, vision and philosophical structure. Contributions come largely from emerging scholarly voices within Film Studies, bringing new and innovative approaches to a film they share a common passion for.

Sound is half the picture, and since the 1960s, film sound not only has rivaled the innovative imagery of contemporary Hollywood cinema, but in some ways has surpassed it in status and privilege because of the emergence of sound design.

This essay charts how MGM and other partners employed strategies to mitigate initial frustrations with 2001's unconventional properties. These improvised efforts gradually helped audiences contend with the film's ambiguities. This ultimately fostered Kubrick's enduring brand and aligned him with European art-cinema auteurs and proto-transmedia storytelling.

ABSTRACT“The grotesque,” which became a stylistic term in the Italian renaissance and later contributed significantly to all forms of modernist art, can help us better understand the so-called “coldness” often attributed to Stanley Kubrick's films. The whole of Kubrick's art is designed to produce a grotesque clash of emotions, an unstable blending of humor and terror that derives ultimately from anxieties about the human body.
