Since the heyday of research on aggression in the late 1960s, developments in several varied areas had enabled us to take a new look at this important though difficult topic. Recent findings and sophisticated new techniques in behavior genetic analysis at the time had made it possible not only to enhance our understanding of the genetic mechanisms underlying aggressive behavior, but also to provide some reasonable suggestions as to the role of aggression in evolution. Originally published in 1983, there had been significant advances in genetic and neural research and a much more sophisticated and heuristic approach to the measurement and conceptualization of aggressive behavior had developed. The ten chapters in this volume provide a thorough overview of these new approaches and methodologies. There are also suggestions regarding the scope of future research on aggressive behavior, since much of what is presented describes the ongoing research activities of the contributors. This book is divided into four sections: The first provides a systematic foundation for research on aggression, and a description of some of the newer strategies for research in this area; the second concerns quantitative genetic analyses, selection data from both wild and laboratory populations, and situational determinants of aggressive behavior; the third section details new and exciting findings in neurochemical and neuropharmacological effects; and the last section contains a chapter that provides a summary and synthesis of all that has come before.

Comparing Intraspecific Aggressiveness in Phytophthora cinnamomi Isolates

Phytophthora cinnamomi is a major plant destructive pathogen with a wide range of hosts and is considered one of the main causes of Quercus spp. decline in the Southwest of the Iberian Peninsula. This study compares two inoculation tests, using simple and fast methodologies, in order to select the most aggressive isolate to use in future Quercus suber inoculation experiments. To evaluate P. cinnamomi intraspecific variability , cork oak excised shoots were inoculated with five isolates, obtained from Q. suber , Quercus rotundifolia and Castanea sativa stands. These isolates were used for in vitro inoculation of a Trifolium subterraneum cultivar available in Portugal in order to assess its usefulness as a \"model plant\" in rapid screening tests. This study revealed intraspecific variability of P. cinnamomi isolates to cause lesions in Q. suber excised shoots and in the number of T. subterraneum developing lesions on stem and leaves. However, there was no correspondence between the aggressiveness of the isolates in subterranean clover and in the cork oak. Only one isolate showed consistency in aggressiveness regardless of the host species. In conclusion, T. subterraneum is not a good \"model plant\" for the evaluation of P. cinnamomi isolates aggressiveness. Phytophthora cinnamomi é um importante agente fitopatogénico com uma ampla gama de hospedeiros e que é considerado uma das principais causas do declínio de Quercus spp. no Sudoeste da Península Ibérica. Este estudo compara dois testes de inoculação, usando metodologias simples e rápidas, de forma a selecionar o isolado mais agressivo para usar em futuros ensaios de inoculação de Quercus suber . Para avaliar a variabilidade intraespecífica de P. cinnamomi , rebentos excisados de sobreiro foram inoculados com cinco isolados, obtidos em povoamentos de Q. suber , Quercus rotundifolia e Castanea sativa . Uma cultivar de Trifolium subterraneum usada em Portugal foi inoculada in vitro com os mesmos isolados de P. cinnamomi para avaliar sua utilidade como \"planta modelo \" numa triagem rápida. Este estudo revelou variabilidade intraespecífica entre os isolados de P. cinnamomi testados para causar lesões em rebentos excisados de Q. suber e no número de lesões desenvolvidas no caule e folhas de T. subterraneum . No entanto, não houve correspondência entre a agressividade dos isolados no trevo subterrâneo e no sobreiro. Apenas um isolado apresentou consistência na agressividade independentemente da espécie hospedeira. Dans cette étude on a utilisé des méthodologies simples et rapides pour comparer deux tests d'inoculation avec l'objectif de sélectionner l'isolat le plus agressif pour utiliser dans futures testes d'inoculation de Quercus suber . Pour évaluer la variabilité intraspécifique de P. cinnamomi chez Q. suber , des pousses excisées de chêne-liège ont été inoculées avec cinq isolats obtenus en Q. suber , Q. rotundifolia et Castanea sativa . Un cultivar de Trifolium subterraneum commercialisée au Portugal a également été soumis à inoculation similaire. L'étude a confirmé la variabilité intraspécifique des isolats de P. cinnamomi concernant l'agressivité chez Q. suber et T. subterraneum . Cependant, aucune correspondance n'a été démontrée entre l'agressivité des isolats en T. subterraneum et en Q. suber . Un seul isolat a montré une agressivité constante indépendante de l'hôte. Donc T. subterraneum n'est pas utile comme \" plante modèle \" pour évaluer l'agressivité de P. cinnamomi .

Juicio moral de la conducta agresiva en competencia: un análisis en futbolistas universitarios
Este estudio tuvo como propósito examinar la aceptabilidad a la respuesta agresiva en competencia de un grupo de 192 practicantes de fútbol a nivel universitario de Bogotá (hombres = 141 y mujeres = 51) desde la Teoría de la Integración de la Información. Se construyó y aplicó un cuestionario con 24 escenarios combinando las variables: importancia del juego, agresión previa y tipo de respuesta agresiva. Los resultados muestran las diferencias respecto al juicio moral de esta conducta en 4 conglomerados a partir de un análisis de K-medias, y Anova. Se identificaron diferencias de acuerdo con el sexo (T = 3.37, p < 0.002) y la posición en el campo de juego (F = 2.83, p <0.05; ƞ²ρ = 0.44); sin embargo, no se encontró que la importancia del juego en disputa sea contexto para la aceptabilidad de la agresión en ningún conglomerado. Finalmente, argumentamos posibles explicaciones sobre el incumplimiento de las leyes algebraicas para el estudio del juicio moral en esta investigación y planteamos sugerencias para mejorar los estudios sobre razonamiento moral en el deporte.

Background and ObjectivesAggression after acquired brain injury (ABI) is common and has implications for rehabilitation and community reintegration. It is also a major burden to patients and caregivers (Alderman et al. 2013). The aim of this study was to identify clinical and demographic factors associated with aggression post-ABI.MethodThe first prospective cohort study included 484 individuals who exhibit aggression (AG) (verbal, physical, or both) and 732 who had injuries of similar severity but did not display aggressive behaviour (NAG) and used scores on the Mayo-Portland Adaptability Inventory-IV (MPAI-4), the BIRT Independent Living Scales (BILS), and the Supervision Rating Scale (SRS), alongside other demographic and clinical factors (e.g. age on admission, gender, months since injury, type of injury, alcohol and substance use before the injury). In the second study a 6-months admission severity score derived from the Overt Aggression Scale – Modified for Neurorehabilitation was created to compare 184 AG to 154 NAG on several demographic characteristics and cognitive domains to identify predictors of aggression in a series of logistic regression analyses.ResultsIn the first study, aggression was associated with longer time since injury, TBI, male sex, younger age, more functional disability and poorer adjustment. Aggression was also associated with more pre-injury psychiatric disturbance (alcohol and drug use, depression and psychotic symptoms). In the second study, compared to NAG, AG patients exhibited significantly worse performance on working memory, immediate and delayed visual memory, recognition, visuo-constructional skills, flexibility, abstraction, letter fluency and processing speed compared to NAG. No significant differences were found in premorbid IQ, verbal IQ and other cognitive measures including attention, verbal memory, and other executive skills. The aggression severity score within the first 6-months of admission was significantly negatively correlated with cognitive measures of visual memory recognition, visuospatial and visuo-constructional skills. All FDR corrected p-values<0.05.ConclusionsThe presence of aggression was associated with specific cognitive impairments, demographic characteristics or psychiatric symptoms. Aggression was also more likely to affect social functioning and independence and was associated with longer time since injury. This highlights the importance of early intervention and long- term monitoring for aggression post-ABI.ReferenceAlderman N, Wood RL.
