Maestros in Democracy
The 128 musicians of the prestigious Orchestra have cast their votes: their new Principal Conductor will be Sir Simon Rattle. He will succeed Claudio Abbado to become the sixth Principal Director in the 2002/2003 season. The Berliner Philharmoniker is the only symphony orchestra world-wide choosing its principal conductor in its own responsibility. EuroArts has been following the orchestra since 1999 at auditions, concerts and guest performances and shows the various steps, from the groundwork preceding the election until the final counting of votes. The most extensive documentation ever produced about this leading orchestra also presents the orchestra as a microcosm of the German society at the end of the 20th century. Excerpts from auditions and interviews with the major conductors our time, statements by members of the orchestra, important agents and soloists working with him, reveal the significance of this new election and convey an atmosphere of expectation and excitement.

\Claudio Abbado in Berlin : the first year\
The vote was over, and a decision had been made: Claudio Abbado was the new chief conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker. So it was in 1989, when - for the first time - the orchestra itself decided who was to be its leader. The result was a surprise for the music world - and also for Abbado himself. This documentary from 1990 traces the first year of the new chief conductor in Berlin, the special atmosphere of new beginnings and the diverse expectations the musicians had of Herbert von Karajan's successor. Other than this, many insights are provided into the first artistic projects of the new man at the helm, starting with the rehearsals for Mahler's First Symphony with which he ushered in his tenure in December 1989. We are also taken behind the scenes to see among other things Abbado's first visit to Karajan's room - which was now to be his - and to a first birthday party with the musicians of the Berliner Philharmoniker. Of course, the members of the orchestra have their say, and tell of their hopes and what they expected of their new boss. Even today, these impressions convey the special magic that was in the air at that time.
The house of magical sounds
This film is both a memoir of the Berliner Philharmoniker director Claudio Abbado´s early years, and a personal introduction to the orchestra. It culminates in a deeply felt introduction to the sections of the orchestra with Abbado leading the Youth Orchestra of a United Europe.
FRANZ SCHUBERT
That level of integrity shines through this honest-to-goodness reading, which differs little from [Claudio Abbado]'s earlier interpretations.
Schubert: The 'Great' C major Symphony CD review -- rusticity and irresistible energy
[Claudio Abbado] 's international career was launched with [Schubert], when he won the Koussevitsky conducting competition in 1958 with a performance of the Unfinished Symphony, and the composer remained an important part of Abbado's repertoire until his death. His performances of the complete symphonies with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe have been among the finest on disc since they were recorded for Deutsche Grammophon a quarter of a century ago. Abbado was also one of the few leading conductors to champion (and record) Schubert's opera Fierrabras, and the Unfinished Symphony also began the programme of the final concerts he conducted in Lucerne in 2013.
