Active Inference with Dynamic Planning and Information Gain in Continuous Space by Inferring Low-Dimensional Latent States
Active inference offers a unified framework in which agents can exhibit both goal-directed and epistemic behaviors. However, implementing policy search in high-dimensional continuous action spaces presents challenges in terms of scalability and stability. Our previously proposed model, T-GLean, addressed this issue by enabling efficient goal-directed planning through low-dimensional latent space search, further reduced by conditioning on prior habituated behavior. However, the lack of an epistemic term in minimizing expected free energy limited the agent’s ability to engage in information-seeking behavior that can be critical for attaining preferred outcomes. In this study, we present EFE-GLean, an extended version of T-GLean that overcomes this limitation by integrating epistemic value into the planning process. EFE-GLean generates goal-directed policies by inferring low-dimensional future posterior trajectories while maximizing expected information gain. Simulation experiments using an extended T-maze task—implemented in both discrete and continuous domains—demonstrate that the agent can successfully achieve its goals by exploiting hidden environmental information. Furthermore, we show that the agent is capable of adapting to abrupt environmental changes by dynamically revising plans through simultaneous minimization of past variational free energy and future expected free energy. Finally, analytical evaluations detail the underlying mechanisms and computational properties of the model.
Education in an era of schooling : critical perspectives of educational practice and action research : a festschrift for Stephen Kemmis
This book is a Festschrift for Emeritus Professor Stephen Kemmis, who has a long and eminent career as an educational researcher and academic spanning over 40 years. His work in curriculum, evaluation, critical practice, action research and practice theory has been influential across all continents of the world. The book examines critical perspectives on educational practice and the participatory nature of action research, including practitioner research particularly as undertaken by teachers in schools. Including vignettes from Kemmis' colleagues and mentors, it draws on contributions from a range of academics whose scholarship has been inspired, influenced and initiated by his work. The chapters stem from a range of countries, including Australia, Canada, Finland, Sweden, the United Kingdom, United States of America, and Trinidad and Tobago - a testimony to the enduring and global legacy of Kemmis' scholarship. Contributing authors include leading educational research scholars, indigenous elders from Australia, and community leaders concerned with environmental sustainability. The concluding focus of this book turns towards practice theory. Kemmis' later work led to the development of the theory of practice architectures and gave rise to the development of the theory of ecologies of practices in education. Research drawing on the theory of practice architectures and ecologies of practices resulted in the leading text \"Changing practices, changing education\" (Kemmis, Wilkinson, Edwards-Groves, Hardy, Grootenboer & Bristol, 2014, Springer) that reports on an Australian investigation of the ecological relationship between student learning, teaching, professional learning, leading and researching practices. This theory is now being applied to study practices across a wide range of international contexts, sites and disciplines including early childhood, school education, university education, vocational education and training, community environment, indigenous cultural sustainability and health.
Placement Planning for Sound Source Tracking in Active Drone Audition
This paper addresses a placement planning method for drones to improve the performance of source tracking by multiple drones equipped with microphone arrays. By equipping the drone with a microphone array, the drone will be able to locate the person in need of rescue, and by deploying multiple drones, the 3D location of the sound source can be estimated. However, effective drone placement for sound source tracking has not been well explored. Therefore, this paper proposes a new drone placement planning method to improve the performance of sound source tracking. By placing multiple drones close to the sound source with multiple angles, it is expected that tracking will be performed with small variance. The placement planning algorithm is also extended to be applicable to multiple sound sources. Through numerical simulations, it is confirmed that the proposed method reduces the sound source tracking error. In conclusion, the contribution of this research is to extend the field of drone audition to active drone audition that allows drones to move by themselves to achieve better tracking results.
Assessing the African Union's 2016–19 Human Rights Action Planning Process: Embracing, and De-Coupling from, the Conventional “Ideal”
This article assesses the African Union's planning process regarding the development of the African Human Rights Action Plan (AHRAP) against the dominant or conventional “ideal” or model of human rights action planning. It examines the extent to which the AU's process followed or departed from the conventional model, the strengths and weaknesses of the AU human rights action planning process, and the lessons scholars and policymakers have learned about more effective and more locally responsive human rights action planning. In doing so, the article sequentially addresses the following specific themes: human rights action planning as a concept and its essential elements; the key characteristics and features of the conventional “ideal” human rights action planning process; and the extent to which the AU plan conformed to or departed from this conventional process, and its import. It also teases out some key insights and lessons learnt (in terms of strengths and weaknesses) in respect of the AHRAP planning process.
The Impact of Action Planning after Causation-and-Effectuation-Based Entrepreneurship Education
The entrepreneurship literature shows inconsistent results in outcome effectiveness, such as entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE), entrepreneurial intention (EI), and entrepreneurial behavior. This could be due to the sole focus on the motivational aspects of behavioral change. Action planning, a volitional intervention used to modify health behavior, could resolve the inconsistent results mentioned above. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the direct impacts of action planning intervention (API) following entrepreneurship education (EE) on ESE, EI, and opportunity recognition and to examine the behavioral change process from motivational and volitional perspectives. In this randomized controlled trial (RCT), we considered action planning to enhance entrepreneurial behavior after EE. The sample included 83 participants from a university in Myanmar. We randomly assigned the students to the API and control groups. We collected data on ESE and EI before and after training. We used objective measures for opportunity recognition through an opportunity evaluation framework. Serial mediation analysis revealed that the volitional impact on opportunity recognition was positively significant. From a motivational standpoint, ESE improved significantly, but we found no significant impact on EI; ESE and EI were serial mediators, with no specific mediation solely by ESE or EI. The findings contribute to the EE literature by presenting a brief and cost-effective API for EE.
Innovations in urban climate governance : voluntary programs for low-carbon buildings and cities

Impact of action planning on visual and body perception in a virtual grasping task
The present study examined mutual influences of visual and body-related signals during planning of an object-oriented action. Participants were to enclose a visual target object using two cursors controlled by the movements of their fingers. During movement preparation, they were asked to judge either the size of the object or a certain finger distance. Both types of judgments were systematically affected by the transformation of finger movements into the movements of visual cursors. We suggest that these biases are perceptual consequences of sensory integration of visual and body-related signals relating to the same external object.
