High-pressure intermittent pneumatic compression applied immediately after physical exercise effectively reduces fatigue and enhances performance: a preliminary study
Introduction: The use of intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) has gained popularity in the sports world as one of the appropriate recovery methods to improve athlete performance and accelerate recovery. However, the benefits of IPC as a recovery method are still very limited. Objective: This study aims to further investigate the effects of high-pressure IPC use on fatigue recovery and performance after physical exercise. Methodology: Fourteen subjects were divided into two groups, each consisting of seven subjects: the intermitten pneumatic compression (IPC) group, which received the IPC intervention and the passive recovery (PR) group, which did not receive any intervention. Both groups performed plyometric training, with measurements of blood lactate levels, leg explosive power and vertical jump height taken before and after recovery. Descriptive statistical analysis, paired sample t-test, and independent sample t-test were used in data analysis. Results: The results showed significant differences in blood lactate levels (p=0.002) and vertical jump height (p=0.006) between the IPC recovery group and the PR group after recovery. Although an increase in leg explosive power was observed after recovery, no statistically significant difference was found between the IPC recovery group and the PR group (p=0.496). Conclusion: The use of high-pressure IPC after physical exercise is significantly more effective than passive recovery in terms of reducing blood lactate levels and enhancing vertical jump height. Although there was a slight increase in leg explosive power, this change was not statistically significant; nonetheless, it is still noteworthy.
Recovery effect of turmeric (curcuma longa l.) and black pepper (piper nigrum) in combination on futsal players
Introduction: There is considerable interest in understanding the physical demands of futsal players to achieve optimal performance. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of curcumin and piperine supplementation on the performance of futsal players after two consecutive intensive matches. Methodology: A randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled design was used in this study. Sixteen amateur futsal players participated and were randomly assigned to two equal groups. The experimental group received curcumin 100 mg + piperine 5 mg, while the placebo group received 105 mg of microcrystalline cellulose. Two matches were played consecutively 24 hours apart (2 × 20 minutes). VO2max was assessed seven days before the first match, while internal load heart rate was evaluated during both matches. To examine players' recovery, CMJ and sprint performance were measured at baseline, 24 hours after the first match, and at 24, 48, and 72 hours after the second match. Results: VO2max and heart rate were similar between both groups, indicating comparable fitness levels and internal load heart rate. Significant differences were found in CMJ (p<0.05) and sprint times (p<0.05) between the experimental and placebo groups at 24, 48, and 72 hours after the second match. Discussion: The results suggest that curcumin and piperine supplementation effectively enhance recovery by reducing muscle fatigue and preserving neuromuscular performance after matches. Conclusions: The combination of curcumin and piperine enhances recovery and helps maintain performance in futsal athletes with demanding competition schedules.

Practical implications of the non-linear pedagogy in future physical Education Teachers Training during a body expression session: towards the edge of chaos (Implicaciones prácticas de la pedagogía no-lineal en la formación del Profesorado de Educación F
During improvisation in movement, the creativity, emotional and perceptual responses depend on each individual. This study aims to analyse the individuals’ performance topics, feelings and response to a specific one-minute classical-style dance improvisation with the given constraint of “magic shoes”. The sample was formed by 65 students of the Teacher Training Master degree, who wrote down in a diary comments referring to sensations, emotions, attitudes, challenges and cognition after one minute of body expression improvising performance. The performance topics were specially addressed to the inability to perform physical activities that they overcame along their performance. Their diaries also reported their shyness and an open mind to discover new people once they changed their way of thinking, especially when getting closer to others, while other students referred to sensations such as passing from sadness to happiness, shyness to openness, and the attitude of overcoming an obstacle with the help of their classmates. When putting this into practice, it is suggested that task constraints may increase the movement possibilities during body expression, but also the deeper cognitive involvement of the students, such as the negotiations of their own boundaries.
The regulation of psychological assessments, and more specifically of psychological tests, has been a matter of concern and debate in the national context for several decades. The aim of this article was to consider and discuss the possible lack of regulation regarding the use and commercialization of psychological tests and the consequences for individuals, society and the results of the psychological assessment. For this, the article provides a brief history of psychological assessment in Brazil, passing through the construction and structuring of the psychological test assessment system (Satepsi), the judgment of the Direct Action of Unconstitutionality (ADI) 3481 by the Supreme Court, and considering the need, reasonableness and adequacy of regulation of the use of and access to psychological tests. The authors conclude that the restriction of access to psychological tests is not potentially harmful for individuals, society or psychological instrument, however, open access or indiscriminate commercialization could be. Personal development and athletic success: exploring the link and predictors of performance among basketball players
Introduction: Personal development goes beyond physical training and technical skills. However, the impact of life skills on athletic performance remains underexplored, indicating a need to examine how personal development contribute to athlete’s success. Objective: This study examined the relationship between personal development, specifically life skills, and performance and the key predictors of performance among varsity basketball players at Mindanao State University (MSU), Philippines. Methodology: A quantitative correlational design was employed, involving 48 varsity players. Performance data were collected through notational analysis, while personal development was assessed using a standardized life skills questionnaire covering teamwork, goal-setting, social skills, problem-solving, emotional skills, leadership, time management, and communication. Pearson's correlation and multiple regression analyses were applied. Results: The findings revealed that the players exhibited moderate personal development overall and majority have fair performance. A statistically significant positive correlation (r = 0.967, p < 0.05) was identified between personal development and performance, with teamwork, emotional skills, leadership, and time management emerging as significant predictors of performance. Discussion: This highlights the importance of integrating structured life skills training into sports programs to foster well-rounded players. Such training not only enhances performance but also equips players with transferable skills for life beyond sports. Conclusions: Current sports environments lack full optimization of life skills, physical and technical skills, thereby calls a need for intervention. Future research should explore similar relationships across diverse sports and cultural contexts to generalize and expand these findings.
Posttraumatic stress disorder in Belgian police officers: prevalence and the effects of exposure to traumatic events
Background: Police officers are at considerable risk of developing posttraumatic symptoms because they frequently encounter violent or emotionally disturbing incidents. We investigate experiences with potentially traumatic events (PTE), traumatic exposure, and the prevalence of probable posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), complex PTSD and subclinical PTSD in a sample of Belgian police officers. Methods: In total, 1,465 police officers from 15 Belgian Local Police zones participated in a web-based survey, consisting of three segments: evaluating experiences with a list of 29 PTE, assessing if any of these PTE accounted for traumatic exposure, and evaluating 1-month probable PTSD, complex PTSD and subclinical PTSD prevalence using the International Trauma Questionnaire (ITQ). Results: Police officers frequently experience a wide range of PTE. A large majority of 93.0% reports traumatic exposure. Assessment with ITQ shows a 1-month prevalence of 5.87% for probable PTSD and 1.50% for probable complex PTSD, while an additional 7.58% report subclinical PTSD. No demographic variables influenced PTSD prevalence. Cumulative PTE experiences in itself did not predict PTSD, while the characteristics of certain PTE did entail a higher prevalence of probable PTSD and subclinical PTSD. Discussion: This study is the first to evaluate experiences with PTE, traumatic exposure and 1-month prevalence of probable PTSD, complex PTSD, and subclinical PTSD in Belgian police officers. Police officers are frequently confronted with a broad variety of PTE, and a large majority reports traumatic exposure. The 1-month prevalence of probable PTSD is significantly higher compared to previous international research in the general population, but lower than in similar international research involving police officers. In this study, cumulative PTE experiences in itself did not reliably predict PTSD, while the characteristics of certain PTE did. Posttraumatic symptoms are an important mental health challenge in Belgian police.
