Drunken drivers could get 40 years Senate endorses boost in maximum penalty for fatal accidents
[Joanne Huelsman] objected to [Lynn Adelman]'s change, however, saying the bill was designed to increase the maximum prison term for a crime not make it easier to convict drunken drivers. Agreeing with Huelsman, Senate President Brian Rude (R-Coon Valley) ruled Adelman's proposal out of order. Huelsman cited dramatic testimony at a public hearing from two Whitewater mothers, Roseanne Belair and Mary Rogers, whose daughters were walking along a road when they were killed in June 1993 by a vehicle driven by a drunken driver, George C. Lohmeier.

George's political profile waxes as financial inquiries wane But ethics investigations worry some Republicans
[Gary George]'s defense over large sums of money he received was that they were gifts from his father and an early distribution of Gary George's inheritance, the so-called \"nest-egg defense,\" according to three officials close to the investigations. Investigators were questioning whether the original sources of the money had been third parties who benefited through legislative actions taken by George. George had claimed he received substantial sums from his father in 1990, '91 and '92, up to several thousand dollars a month and totaling more than $200,000 for those years, sources said. [Lynn Adelman] said he did not think George's ethics problems played a role in how lawmakers were responding to the power sharing plan. \"So much time has elapsed since those allegations (were raised) and nothing has happened. It's not really fair to raise those issues against Gary,\" Adelman said. That deal has stalled. \"I have had a number of people who have brought (ethical questions about George) up to me,\" said Sen. Margaret Farrow (R-Elm Grove). \"There are a lot of questions about Gary and his holding good to his word,\" she said. Some lawmakers have felt burned by George on legislative matters, though she hasn't, Farrow said.
