The adman's dilemma : from Barnum to Trump
\"The Adman's Dilemma is a cultural biography that explores the rise and fall of the advertising man as a figure who became effectively a licensed deceiver in the process of governing the lives of American consumers. Apparently this personage was caught up in a contradiction, both compelled to deceive yet supposed to tell the truth. It was this moral condition and its consequences that made the adman so interesting to critics, novelists, and eventually filmmakers. The biography tracks his saga from its origins in the exaggerated doings of P.T. Barnum, the emergence of a new profession in the 1920s, the heyday of the adman's influence during the post-WW2 era, the later rebranding of the adman as artist, until the apparent demise of the figure, symbolized by the triumph of that consummate huckster, Donald Trump. In The Adman's Dilemma, author Paul Rutherford explores how people inside and outside the advertising industry have understood the conflict between artifice and authenticity. The book employs a range of fictional and nonfictional sources, including memoirs, novels, movies, TV shows, websites, and museum exhibits to suggest how the adman embodied some of the strange realities of modernity.\"-- Provided by publisher.
General solutions of Einstein gravity at Formula omitted
2023
Einstein gravity at [Formula omitted] limit can be obtained from the Kaluza-Klein procedure by taking the dimensions of the internal space to zero while keeping only the breathing mode. The resulting scalar-tensor theory can be further reduced to JT gravity or the Liouville CFT at the large central charge limit, bridging the two important 2d models. We construct the general solutions of the theory, including black holes and wormholes for both positive and negative cosmological constants. We obtain the on-shell action of the nearly AdS [Formula omitted] and show that for suitable boundary slices, the Schwarzian action governs the leading-order dynamics at the finite boundary cutoff in later time. For positive cosmological constant, we find that the scalar is well defined on the 2-sphere.

Imaging tau and amyloid-beta proteinopathies in Alzheimer disease and other conditions
2018
Most neurodegenerative disorders are associated with aggregated protein deposits. In the case of Alzheimer disease (AD), extracellular amyloid-β (Aβ) aggregates and intracellular tau neurofibrillary tangles are the two neuropathological hallmarks of the disease. Aβ-PET imaging has already been approved for clinical use and is being used in clinical trials of anti-Aβ therapies both for patient recruitment and as an outcome measure. These studies have shown that Aβ accumulation is a protracted process that can extend for more than 2 decades before the onset of clinical AD. This Review describes how in vivo brain imaging of Aβ pathology has revolutionized the evaluation of patients with clinical AD by providing robust and reproducible statements of global or regional brain Aβ burden and enabling the monitoring of disease progression. The role of selective tau imaging is discussed, focusing on how longitudinal tau and Aβ imaging studies might reveal the various effects (sequential and/or parallel, independent and/or synergistic) of these proteins on progression, cognition and other disease-specific biomarkers of neurodegeneration. Finally, imaging studies are discussed in the context of elucidating the respective roles of Aβ and tau in AD and in advancing our understanding of the relationship and/or interplay between these two proteinopathies.

Insight into N.sub.2O Formation Over Different Crystal Phases of MnO.sub.2 During Low-Temperature NH.sub.3-SCR of NO
2021
Different crystal phases of MnO.sub.2 were synthesized and tested for NH.sub.3-SCR of NO and NH.sub.3 oxidation performances during 50-120 °C. Among those catalysts, [alpha]-MnO.sub.2 showed the most superior SCR performance for NO.sub.x conversion and N.sub.2 selectivity, and NH.sub.3 species on its surface were active to react with the oxygen, while NH.sub.2 species were also easily oxidized by the oxygen. For [beta]-MnO.sub.2, NH.sub.3 (ads, B) species and part of NH.sub.3 (ads, L) species on its surface were active to react with oxygen, while NH.sub.3 (ads, L) species adsorbed at Lewis sites showed low reactive with O.sub.2, thereby producing less N.sub.2O and low NO conversion. [gamma]-MnO.sub.2 showed the similar NO.sub.x conversion rates and N.sub.2O amount generated from the NH.sub.3 oxidation comparing to [alpha]-MnO.sub.2, while yielding much more N.sub.2O generation ratios from SCR reactions conditions. Besides, NH.sub.3 (ads, L), NH.sub.3 (ads, B), NO.sub.3.sup.2- and NH.sub.2 species adsorbed on [gamma]-MnO.sub.2 surface had high reactivity and could all be consumed by oxygen rapidly. And the N.sub.2O formation of [delta]-MnO.sub.2 mainly generated from SCR reactions conditions in the temperature range of 50-120 °C, while the adsorbed NH.sub.3 (ads, L) species were hard to react with O.sub.2.
