Advances in the smart materials applications in the aerospace industries
Purpose Smart materials also called intelligent materials are gaining importance continuously in many industries including aerospace one. It is because of the unique features of these materials such as self-sensing, self-adaptability, memory capabilities and manifold functions. For a long time, there is no review of smart materials. Therefore, it is considered worthwhile to write a review on this subject. Design/methodology/approach A thorough search of the literature was carried out through SciFinder, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, Wiley Online Library and reputed and peer-reviewed journals. The literature was critically analyzed and a review was written. Findings This study describes the advances in smart materials concerning their applications in aerospace industries. The classification, working principle and recent developments (nano-smart materials) of smart materials are discussed. Besides, the future perspectives of these materials are also highlighted. Much research has not been done in this area, which needs more extensive study. Originality/value Certainly, this study will be highly useful for academicians, researchers and technocrats working in aerospace industries.
Towards the Thousandth CubeSat: A Statistical Overview
CubeSats have become an interesting innovation in the space sector. Such platforms are being used for several space applications, such as education, Earth remote sensing, science, and defense. As of May 31st, 2018, 855 CubeSats had been launched. Remote sensing application is the main sector in which CubeSats are being used, corresponding to about 45% of all applications. This fact indicates the commercial potential of such a platform. Fifty eight countries have already been involved with developing CubeSats. The most used CubeSat configuration is 3U (about 64%), followed by 1U (18%), while 6U platforms account for about 4%. In this paper, we present an analysis of the current situation regarding CubeSats worldwide, through the use of a dataset built to encompass information about these satellites. The overall success rate of the CubeSat missions is increasing over time. Moreover, considering CubeSat missions as a Bernoulli experiment, and excluding launch failures, the current success rate was estimated, as a parameter of a binomial distribution, to be about 75%. By using a logistic model and considering that the launchings keep following the current tendency, one can expect that one thousand CubeSats will be launched in 2021, within 95% certainty.

Compressive Behaviour of Additively Manufactured Lattice Structures: A Review
Additive manufacturing (AM) technology has undergone an evolutionary process from fabricating test products and prototypes to fabricating end-user products—a major contributing factor to this is the continuing research and development in this area. AM offers the unique opportunity to fabricate complex structures with intricate geometry such as the lattice structures. These structures are made up of struts, unit cells, and nodes, and are being used not only in the aerospace industry, but also in the sports technology industry, owing to their superior mechanical properties and performance. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the mechanical properties and performance of both metallic and non-metallic lattice structures, focusing on compressive behaviour. In particular, optimisation techniques utilised to optimise their mechanical performance are examined, as well the primary factors influencing mechanical properties of lattices, and their failure mechanisms/modes. Important AM limitations regarding lattice structure fabrication are identified from this review, while the paucity of literature regarding material extruded metal-based lattice structures is discussed.
A Survey on Low-Thrust Trajectory Optimization Approaches
In this paper, we provide a survey on available numerical approaches for solving low-thrust trajectory optimization problems. First, a general mathematical framework based on hybrid optimal control will be presented. This formulation and their elements, namely objective function, continuous and discrete state and controls, and discrete and continuous dynamics, will serve as a basis for discussion throughout the whole manuscript. Thereafter, solution approaches for classical continuous optimal control problems will be briefly introduced and their application to low-thrust trajectory optimization will be discussed. A special emphasis will be placed on the extension of the classical techniques to solve hybrid optimal control problems. Finally, an extensive review of traditional and state-of-the art methodologies and tools will be presented. They will be categorized regarding their solution approach, the objective function, the state variables, the dynamical model, and their application to planetocentric or interplanetary transfers.
UAV Path Planning Based on Improved A∗ and DWA Algorithms
This work proposes a path planning algorithm based on A∗ and DWA to achieve global path optimization while satisfying security and speed requirements for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). The algorithm first preprocesses the map for irregular obstacles encountered by a UAV in flight, including grid preprocessing for arc-shaped obstacles and convex preprocessing for concave obstacles. Further, the standard A∗ algorithm is improved based on UAV’s flight environment information and motion constraints. Further, the DWA algorithm’s limitations regarding local optimization and long planning time are mitigated by adaptively adjusting the evaluation function according to the UAV’s safety threshold, obstacles, and environment information. As a result, the global optimal path evaluation subfunction is constructed. Finally, the key points of the global path are selected as the subtarget points of the local path planning. Under the premise of the optimal path, the UAV real-time path’s efficiency and safety are effectively improved. The experimental results demonstrate that the path planning based on improved A∗ and DWA algorithms shortens the path length, reduces the planning time, improves the UAV path smoothness, and enhances the safety of UAV path obstacle avoidance.
