Pinder explores how globalization has shaped, and continues to shape, the American economy, which impacts the welfare state in markedly new ways. In the United States, the transformation from a manufacturing economy to a service economy escalated the need for an abundance of flexible, exploitable, cheap workers. The implementation of the Personal Responsibility Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA), whose generic term is workfare, is one of the many ways in which the government responded to capital need for cheap labor. While there is a clear link between welfare and low-wage markets, workfare forces welfare recipients, including single mothers with young children, to work outside of the home in exchange for their welfare checks. More importantly, workfare provides an “underclass” of labor that is trapped in jobs that pay minimum wage. This “underclass” is characteristically gendered and racialized, and the book builds on these insights and seeks to illuminate a crucial but largely overlooked aspect of the negative impact of workfare on black single mother welfare recipients. The stereotype of the “underclass,” which is infused with racial meaning, is used to describe and illustrate the position of black single mother welfare recipients and is an implicit way of talking about poor women with an invidious racist and sexist subtext, which Pinder suggests is one of the ways in which “gendered racism” presents itself in the United States. Ultimately, the book analyzes the intersectionality of race, gender, and class in terms of welfare policy reform in the United States.

In Nursing Civil Rights, Charissa J. Threat investigates the parallel battles against occupational segregation by African American women and white men in the U.S. Army.
As Threat reveals, both groups viewed their circumstances with the Army Nurse Corps as a civil rights matter. Each conducted separate integration campaigns to end the discrimination they suffered. Yet their stories defy the narrative that civil rights struggles inevitably arced toward social justice. Threat tells how progressive elements in the campaigns did indeed break down barriers in both military and civilian nursing. At the same time, she follows conservative threads to portray how some of the women who succeeded as agents of change became defenders of exclusionary practices when men sought military nursing careers. The ironic result was a struggle that simultaneously confronted and reaffirmed the social hierarchies that nurtured discrimination.
The managed hand

Two women, virtual strangers, sit hand-in-hand across a narrow table, both intent on the same thing-achieving the perfect manicure. Encounters like this occur thousands of times across the United States in nail salons increasingly owned and operated by Asian immigrants. This study looks closely for the first time at these intimate encounters, focusing on New York City, where such nail salons have become ubiquitous. Drawing from rich and compelling interviews, Miliann Kang takes us inside the nail industry, asking such questions as: Why have nail salons become so popular? Why do so many Asian women, and Korean women in particular, provide these services? Kang discovers multiple motivations for the manicure-from the pampering of white middle class women to the artistic self-expression of working class African American women to the mass consumption of body-related services. Contrary to notions of beauty service establishments as spaces for building community among women, The Managed Hand finds that while tentative and fragile solidarities can emerge across the manicure table, they generally give way to even more powerful divisions of race, class, and immigration.

The Color of Successtells of the astonishing transformation of Asians in the United States from the \"yellow peril\" to \"model minorities\"--peoples distinct from the white majority but lauded as well-assimilated, upwardly mobile, and exemplars of traditional family values--in the middle decades of the twentieth century. As Ellen Wu shows, liberals argued for the acceptance of these immigrant communities into the national fold, charging that the failure of America to live in accordance with its democratic ideals endangered the country's aspirations to world leadership.

Together, these illuminate the impact of foreign relations on the domestic racial order and how the nation accepted Asians as legitimate citizens while continuing to perceive them as indelible outsiders.

The new generation of scholars differs in many ways from its predecessor of just a few decades ago. Academia once consisted largely of men in traditional single-earner families. Today, men and women fill the doctoral student ranks in nearly equal numbers and most will experience both the benefits and challenges of living in dual-income households. This generation also has new expectations and values, notably the desire for flexibility and balance between careers and other life goals. However, changes to the structure and culture of academia have not kept pace with young scholars' desires for work-family balance.Do Babies Matter?is the first comprehensive examination of the relationship between family formation and the academic careers of men and women. The book begins with graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, moves on to early and mid-career years, and ends with retirement. Individual chapters examine graduate school, how recent PhD recipients get into the academic game, the tenure process, and life after tenure. Barriers to agricultural employment among African American youth: Evidence from the American Community Survey

This paper investigates the occupational choices of African American youth in U.S. agricultural and food sectors. Using nationally representative data from the American Community Survey, we estimate a multinomial logit model to assess how socioeconomic conditions influence employment in three occupational categories: farming, farm-related work, and food preparation. Results reveal that agricultural employment among African American youth remains rare, and that gender is a strong predictor of occupational choice. Young African American women are significantly less likely than men to work in farming or related sectors, and more likely to be employed in food preparation. Educational attainment and student status are positively associated with food service employment but do not predict participation in farming occupations. These findings have important implications for agricultural policy, particularly as policymakers seek to address demographic disparities and revitalize the rural workforce. The results highlight the need for youth-specific policies, including targeted outreach, farm incubator programs, and access to capital, that address the compounded barriers facing youth in agricultural employment.

Moderating Factors in an Anti-stigma Intervention for African American Women with HIV in the United States: A Secondary Analysis of the UNITY Trial

African American women experience higher rates of HIV than other women in the United States, and stigma has been identified as an important determinant of engagement in HIV care. Our study examined whether key variables moderated the effect of an anti-stigma intervention on outcomes among African American women receiving treatment for HIV. Twelve potential moderators included: age, years lived with HIV, marital status, employment status, education level, PTSD diagnosis, alcohol use, social support, baseline CD4 count, baseline viral load, and number of children. Outcomes included changes in: HIV-related stigma, social support, depressive symptoms, PTSD symptoms, alcohol use, viral load, and engagement in HIV care. Results suggest that the intervention is associated with greater improvement in engagement in care among participants with PTSD or depression at baseline, and may help maintain engagement in care among participants experiencing certain mental health conditions. This provides opportunities to address discriminatory structural barriers that lead to stigma and drop-offs in HIV care.
