The Caretaker Debate, 10th Jatiya Sangsad Elections and Recent Trends in Bangladesh Politics
2017
Because of the allegation of the degree of rigging, the parliamentary opposition parties decided not to participate in any election under the then BNP government and raised the demand for holding elections under NPCG despite its extreme intransigence against the opposition demand for NPCG terming it unconstitutional, non representative, and dangerous. According to its provisions, the President was given the sole authority to appoint preferably the last retiring Chief Justice among several options who is qualified to be appointed as an adviser as the Chief Adviser, a post equivalent to the post of Prime Minister. The matter was taken to the court challenging the legality of the NPCG system (Manik, 2011). Since it tempted the party in power to promote or not to promote judges on political consideration to ensure the latter's favored person to become Chief Adviser of the next caretaker government (Manik, 2011), and taking some other factors into account, the highest court of the country declared the NPCG system illegal. [...]there was hardly any common ground where the two could meet. [...]their differences led to violent activities by both sides; one side for elections under some form of non-partisan government, the other to hold elections under the party government in name of upholding the constitution and to prevent the BNP-led communal, terrorist, militant, anti-liberation, pro-western forces from coming to power. It should be mentioned that although the European Union, the United States and the Western powers, supported the BNP-led alliance's demand for a free and fair elections (The Daily Star, 2014,January 7), they were not sure and were ambivalent about the BNP-led alliance's commitment and ability to fight against the \"Islamist terrorism\".

POLITICS-BANGLADESH: ARMY SET TO BREAK ANTI-POLL BLOCKADE

Ahmed, Farid

Ahmed, Iajuddin
2007
President Ahmed enjoys the support of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). The BNP is led by Begum Khaleda Zia, who stepped down as prime minister in October after completing a five-year-term. Backing the move to push the polls through is the Jamaat-e-Islami, BNP's fundamentalist ally. \"If necessary, we'll continue the blockade for 10 days,\" Sheikh Hasina threatened Friday night. \"If [Iajuddin Ahmed] doesn't quit, we'll lay siege to the Bangabhaban (presidential palace) for an indefinite period.\" She has accused Ahmed of helping the BNP and the Jamaat-e-Islami rig the elections. \"Political stability is interlinked with any development activities and if there is any unrest we'll have to suffer a lot with our ongoing projects across Bangladesh,\" said Syed Ishteaque Ali Jinnah, Director for Policy and Advocacy, at Water Aid Bangladesh.

Bangladesh media guide January 2007
2007
In what was broadly seen as a freedom of expression issue, the first terrestrial rival to BTV, Ekushey TV, was closed down in August 2002 following a court battle over licensing irregularities. Ekushey TV's right to broadcast was restored by a court decision a year later. Ekushey could return to air in 2007, according to Dhaka media analysts. The case highlighted the lack of a legal framework for broadcasting in Bangladesh. The BBC World Service is available on FM in Dhaka. Prothom Alo newspaper observed that during the January 2007 political crisis \"people have been eagerly interested to listen to BBC news bulletins, including the BBC Bengali Service, in various parts of the country after 16 long years.\" The dropping of private TV news bulletins on the first day of the January 2007 emergency led people \"to brave the cold across the country, gather in groups and listen to BBC and other foreign news bulletins,\" the paper observed. Bangladesh has three news agencies. Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) is the official news agency of Bangladesh while the United News of Bangladesh (UNB) is a private-sector news agency. Bdnews24.com is an internet-based news agency.

Bangladesh: Political appointees still control state TV and radio, paper
2006
There has not been any change yet also in the top posts at the External Affairs Division of the foreign ministry, Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB), Directorate of Film and Publication (DFP) and Principal Information Officer (PIO). Most of the top brass of these important state organs has been appointed politically in the last five years of the alliance rule. Sources said though the senior officials of the state-owned Bangladesh Betar and Bangladesh Television have reputation for unflinching loyalty to BNP and Jamaat, the caretaker administration of President Iajuddin Ahmed has yet to take any step to correct the situation. The LDP leaders yesterday asked the president to remove [Mokhlesur Rahman Chowdhury] as they feared he might seek to disclose the plans and moves of the chief adviser to the immediate past ruling party as 'someone closely affiliated' with Dinkal, which is published by Senior Joint Secretary General of BNP Tarique Rahman.

POLITICS-BANGLADESH: ANTI-CORRUPTION EFFORT IS FLAWED, CRITICS SAY
2008
\"The government set up the truth commission in a bid to spur economic activities which slowed down after the crackdown on corruption suspects,\" one of the authors of the truth commission law, Anisul Huq, told IPS in an interview. \"There is scope for discrimination as the commission is formed from certain groups of people,\" Awami League leader Matia Chowdhury said. \"The government has formed the commission to help its own people to escape punishment.'' The country's apex trade body, the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry, has complained that the drive has caused a \"climate of fear\" that has dampened the national economy.
