As a young man Younes' life is irrevocably changed when he leaves his broken home for the vibrant, colourful and affluent European district of Rio Salado. Renamed Jonas, he begins a new life and forges a unique friendship with a group of boys, an enduring bond that nothing - not even the Algerian Revolt - will shake.
Algeria in France : transpolitics, race, and nation
2004
Algerian migration to France began at the end of the 19th century, but in
recent years France's Algerian community has been the focus of a shifting public
debate encompassing issues of unemployment, multiculturalism, Islam, and terrorism.
In this finely crafted historical and anthropological study, Paul A. Silverstein
examines a wide range of social and cultural forms -- from immigration policy,
colonial governance, and urban planning to corporate advertising, sports, literary
narratives, and songs -- for what they reveal about postcolonial Algerian
subjectivities. Investigating the connection between anti-immigrant racism and the
rise of Islamist and Berberist ideologies among the second generation
(Beurs), he argues that the appropriation of these cultural-political
projects by Algerians in France represents a critique of notions of European or
Mediterranean unity and elucidates the mechanisms by which the Algerian civil war
has been transferred onto French soil.
Assia Djebar : out of Algeria
In 'Assia Djebar', Jane Hiddleston traces Djebar's development as a writer against the backdrop of North Africa's tumultuous history.
From empire to exile : history and memory within the pied-noir and harki communities, 1962-2012
Exploring the memory of the war of independence in France as viewed by the former European settlers (pieds-noirs) and the harkis, those Algerians who worked for the French security forces, this title examines how the memorial dynamics of the two groups are related both to each other and to other memories of the war.
Algerian Women in Western Online News During the ‘Hirak’: Emerging Images and Recurring Stereotypes
2024
The Algerian ‘Hirak’ refers to a series of manifestations to protest against the ruling system in Algeria, which began in February 2019. It is considered a historical marker that featured a significant role of women in political change. This research project examined the image of Algerian women in Western media during this period using corpus-assisted critical discourse analysis. It is based on 36 articles reporting on Algerian women during the 'Hirak' movement published by different English news websites. Sketch Engine was used to extract the significant lexical items associated with Algerian women in these articles. Then these items were classified into groups according to the theme they reflect. The analysis of the extracted terms indicates that the framing of Algerian women in English news is linked to six main themes: activism, empowerment, oppression and violence, rights, religion, and family and lifestyle. The findings revealed that the news articles under investigation documented gendering the Algerian ‘Hirak’ and highlighted the emerging image of women as active agents of change, in a similar fashion to that of Arab women during the Arab Spring. They were framed in powerful settings, fighting for their rights and condemning gender-based injustice. Yet, the articles continued to reflect the stereotypical depiction of women’s vulnerability and victimization, linking that to the embedded patriarchal notions in society.
Journal Article
I die by this country
\"This novel, focusing on the lives of two sisters, tells of the difficult integration of an Algerian family into French society in the years immediately following Algerian independence. Its intimate view of family life runs parallel to broader social and ethical concerns linked to France's relationship with its former colony.\" -- Provided by publisher
Humor and Power in Algeria, 1920 to 2021
2023
In times of peace as well as conflict, humor has served Algerians as a tool of both unification and division. Humor has also assisted Algerians of various backgrounds and ideological leanings with engaging critically in power struggles throughout the country's contemporary history. By analyzing comedic discourse in various forms (including plays, jokes, and cartoons), Humor and Power in Algeria, 1920 to 2021 demonstrates the globally informed and creative ways that civilians have made sense of moments of victory and loss through humor. Using oral interviews and media archives in Arabic, French, and Tamazight, Elizabeth M. Perego expands on theoretical debates about humor as a tool of resistance and explores the importance of humor as an instrument of war, peace, and social memory, as well as a source for retracing volatile, contested pasts.
Humor and Power in Algeria, 1920 to 2021 reveals how Algerians have harnessed humor to express competing visions for unity in a divided colonial society, to channel and process emotions surrounding a brutal war of decolonization and the forging of a new nation, and to demonstrate resilience in the face of a terrifying civil conflict.
