Artisans, Objects, and Everyday Life in Renaissance Italy
Did ordinary Italians have a ‘Renaissance’? This book presents the first in-depth exploration of how artisans and small local traders experienced the material and cultural Renaissance. Drawing on a rich blend of sixteenth-century visual and archival evidence, it examines how individuals and families at artisanal levels (such as shoemakers, barbers, bakers and innkeepers) lived and worked, managed their household economies and consumption, socialised in their homes, and engaged with the arts and the markets for luxury goods. It demonstrates that although the economic and social status of local craftsmen and traders was relatively low, their material possessions show how these men and women who rarely make it into the history books were fully engaged with contemporary culture, cultural customs and the urban way of life. There is a focus on Renaissance Siena, a city that is rarely included in studies of the Italian Renaissance.
Understanding Social Media Logic
Over the past decade, social media platforms have penetrated deeply into the mech­anics of everyday life, affecting people's informal interactions, as well as institutional structures and professional routines. Far from being neutral platforms for everyone, social media have changed the conditions and rules of social interaction. In this article, we examine the intricate dynamic between social media platforms, mass media, users, and social institutions by calling attention to social media logic—the norms, strategies, mechanisms, and economies—underpin­ning its dynamics. This logic will be considered in light of what has been identified as mass me­dia logic, which has helped spread the media's powerful discourse outside its institutional boundaries. Theorizing social media logic, we identify four grounding principles—programmabil­ity, popularity, connectivity, and datafication—and argue that these principles become increas­ingly entangled with mass media logic. The logic of social media, rooted in these grounding principles and strategies, is gradually invading all areas of public life. Besides print news and broadcasting, it also affects law and order, social activism, politics, and so forth. Therefore, its sustaining logic and widespread dissemination deserve to be scrutinized in detail in order to better understand its impact in various domains. Concentrating on the tactics and strategies at work in social media logic, we reassess the constellation of power relationships in which social practices unfold, raising questions such as: How does social media logic modify or enhance ex­isting mass media logic? And how is this new media logic exported beyond the boundaries of (social or mass) media proper? The underlying principles, tactics, and strategies may be relat­ively simple to identify, but it is much harder to map the complex connections between plat­forms that distribute this logic: users that employ them, technologies that drive them, economic structures that scaffold them, and institutional bodies that incorporate them.
Exploring 'Unseen' Social Capital in Community Participation
This book argues that using social capital to eradicate poverty is less likely to succeed because the mainstream neoinstitutional approach mistakenly assumes that social capital necessarily benefits poor people. This inadequacy calls for a re-assessment of human motivations, institutional dynamics and structural complexity in social capital building. Using ethnographic and participatory methods, this book calls for an exploration of 'unseen' social capital which is intended to challenge the mainstream understanding of 'seen' social capital. As such this book is useful to policy makers and practitioners. Exploring 'Unseen' Social Capital in Community Participation stelt vraagtekens bij de gangbare benaderingen van sociaal kapitaal, die zich uitsluitend concentreren op de kwantificering van netwerken. Dit boek stelt juist dat het succes van deelname aan een gemeenschap afhangt van hoe goed we de instituties en structuren in beeld kunnen brengen die mede het maatschappelijk functioneren van arme migranten beïnvloeden. Door gebruik te maken van participatieve en etnografische methoden maakt dit boek voor het eerst 'onzichtbaar' sociaal kapitaal zichtbaar dat eigen is aan interpersoonlijke relaties. Deze relaties worden gevormd op grond van uiteenlopende beweegredenen en zij ontwikkelen zich naar gelang veranderingen in levensomstandigheden. Dit boek is niet alleen van belang voor beleidsmakers op sociaal terrein maar ook voor veldwerkers en iedereen die belangstelling heeft voor de gevolgen van en mogelijkheden die migratie biedt.

In this powerful, compassionate work, one of anthropology's most distinguished ethnographers weaves together rich fieldwork with a compelling critical analysis in a book that will surely make a signal contribution to contemporary thinking about violence and how it affects everyday life. Veena Das examines case studies including the extreme violence of the Partition of India in 1947 and the massacre of Sikhs in 1984 after the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. In a major departure from much anthropological inquiry, Das asks how this violence has entered \"the recesses of the ordinary\" instead of viewing it as an interruption of life to which we simply bear witness. Das engages with anthropological work on collective violence, rumor, sectarian conflict, new kinship, and state and bureaucracy as she embarks on a wide-ranging exploration of the relations among violence, gender, and subjectivity. Weaving anthropological and philosophical reflections on the ordinary into her analysis, Das points toward a new way of interpreting violence in societies and cultures around the globe. Integration als betriebliche Routine. Organisationssoziologische Perspektiven auf alltägliche Integrationsprozesse
Arbeitsmarkt(re)integration von gesundheitlich eingeschränkten Mitarbeiter*innen findet hauptsächlich in Betrieben statt. Allerdings nimmt die Stay atund Return to Work-Forschung die spezifischen Strukturen von betrieblicher Wiedereingliederung nur randständig in den Blick. Fokussiert werden hauptsächlich formale Verfahren wie das betriebliche Wiedereingliederungsmanagement und schematisch beschriebene Akteurskonstellationen. Kurzfristige Absprachen im Arbeitsalltag, Koordination außerhalb von eingefahrenen Prozeduren und bewusstes Abweichen von Vorschriften werden so außer Acht gelassen. Daher bleiben auschlaggebende Gelingensbedingungen betrieblicher Wiedereingliederung unerkannt. Wir adressieren diese Forschungslücke und plädieren für eine genuin organisationsoziologische Perspektive auf betriebliche Arbeitsmarkt(re)integration. Wir nutzen das theoretische Konzept der organisationalen Routinen und können so ein Ablaufmodell gelingender Integrationsroutinen entwickeln. Labor market (re)integration of employees with reduced earning capacity mainly takes place in companies. Nevertheless, previous research has disregarded companies as specific environments for reintegration. The research focus stays on formal cooperate health care procedures and schematically described actor constellations. Deliberate deviations from these formal procedures and the complex informal coordination of integration in everyday working life, as well as their success conditions, thus remain hidden. To address this unsolved task, we argue for a genuine organizational-sociological perspective on company-based labor market (re)integration. Subsequently, we introduce a model of successful integration processes based on the concept of organizational routines.
Fachkräfte und Unternehmen zusammenbringen – Kooperation zwischen Leistungserbringern und Unternehmen im Kontext der beruflichen Rehabilitation
Im Rahmen beruflicher Rehabilitation bieten spezialisierte Bildungseinrichtungen Maßnahmen für Menschen mit Behinderungen an. Obwohl diese Einrichtungen eine Schlüsselfunktion in der Beschäftigungsintegration besitzen, ist bislang wenig über ihre Organisation bekannt. Auf Basis von 35 Experteninterviews erfolgte eine systematische Betrachtung dieser Einrichtungen. Der Fokus liegt hier auf der Zusammenarbeit zwischen Leistungserbringern und Unternehmen. Die Ergebnisse identifizieren langjährige Netzwerke der Leistungserbringer zu meist kleinen bzw. mittelgroßen, regionalen Unternehmen. Die direkte Kommunikation und ihr hoher Spezialisierungsgrad sind maßgebliche Erfolgsfaktoren in der Vermittlung von Geförderten. Politische Akteure wie die Kostenträger beruflicher Rehabilitation sind angehalten, die Leistungserbringer als Bindeglied zwischen Betrieb und Fachkraft bestmöglich zu stärken. Specialised educational service providers offer specific programmes for people with disabilities. Despite their importance, little is known about these institutions. Based on 35 expert interviews, we systematically examine them and focus on their cooperation with companies. The results identify long-standing networks between the service providers and mostly small or medium-sized regional companies. Direct communication and their high degree of specialisation are key success factors in placing people with disabilities. Financers for vo cational rehabilitation are called upon to further strengthen the service providers’ role as a link between companies and skilled workers.
Legitime Leiden. Die Rechtfertigung von eingeschränktem Arbeitsvermögen und betrieblichen Reintegrationsmaßnahmen am Beispiel psychisch erkrankter Beschäftigter
Die neuere Forschungsliteratur betont die normativen Dimensionen der betrieblichen Wiedereingliederung. Daran anknüpfend untersucht der Artikel am Beispiel psychisch erkrankter Beschäftigter, wann und wie im Prozess der Eingliederung Rechtfertigungsbedarf entsteht und analysiert die Rechtfertigungsmuster, auf die betriebliche Akteure zurückgreifen. Als theoretischer Rahmen dient die Soziologie der Konventionen. Empirisch beruht der Artikel auf qualitativen Interviews mit Beschäftigten, Vorgesetzten, HR-und Eingliederungsverantwortlichen in drei Großunternehmen in der Schweiz. Weiterbeschäftigung und Wiedereingliederung werden vorwiegend über das kooperative Verhalten und die (weiter zu erwartende) Arbeitsleistung der Betroffenen gerechtfertigt. Aus diesen Rechtfertigungslogiken können sich zum Ziel der Rehabilitation konträre Dynamiken und Handlungszwänge ergeben. Recent literature has stressed the normative dimensions of occupational reintegration. This article examines when and how a need for justification arises in the process of reintegration, focusing on mentally ill employees. Drawing on the sociology of conventions, justification patterns used by organizational actors are analysed. Empirically, the article is based on qualitative interviews with employees, supervisors, HR and integration managers in three large companies in Switzerland. The employees’cooperative behaviour and their (expected) work performance are the most important criteria of justification. These logics of justifi cation can result in dynamics and constraints that are contrary to the goal of rehabilitation.
