Great Britain -- History -- To 1066
2022
'Winters in the World' is a beautifully observed journey through the cycle of the year in Anglo-Saxon England, exploring the festivals, customs, and traditions linked to the different seasons. Drawing on a wide variety of source material, including poetry, histories, and religious literature, Eleanor Parker investigates how Anglo-Saxons felt about the annual passing of the seasons and the profound relationship they saw between human life and the rhythms of nature. Many of the festivals celebrated in the United Kingdom today have their roots in the Anglo-Saxon period, and this book traces their surprising history while unearthing traditions now long forgotten. It celebrates some of the finest treasures of medieval literature and provides an imaginative connection to the Anglo-Saxon world.

The July 14 and the Cultural Transfers in the Franco-Brazilian Press at the Turn of 20th Century (1859-1922)
2024
in 1890, the traditional date of the French National Festival, July 14, was included as a Brazilian holiday after the Proclamation of the Republic in Brazil (1889). The aim of this article is to analyze how the celebrations of the 14th of July, an event symbolizing the values of the Enlightenment and the feeling of Latinity, which had a strong impact on the Américas during the 19th century, was represented in the pages of Franco-Brazilian newspapers between 1859 and 1922. The hypothesis is that this ephemeris was a date of affi rmation for the French colony and became a symbol of its integration into the host country. Contrary to approaches that tend to emphasize France as a model for Brazil, the intention was to map out how cultural interactions and transfers took place between the two nations. As a result, we also noticed the widespread use of French symbols to politically legitimize the values of certain republican groups, which was used to the advantage of the French colony that was trying to establish itself in a nationalist and xenophobic environment

'Our confession approves giving honor to the saints' - really?: Towards a calendar for ritual memory retention down under
2018
Fans of the St. Kilda Football Club sing 'O when the saints go marching in'. They want to be with St. Kilda. But it seems that the saints and martyrs for us have gone marching out. Not into heaven but into oblivion. Yes, Article 21 of the Apology of the Augsburg Confession says 'Our confession approves giving honor to the saints'. The Augsburg Confession and particularly the Apology outline an evangelical approach to the saints which puts the spotlight on Christ. Our Eucharistic liturgies, cosmic in scope, remind us of the saints present with us - a huge Sunday attendance beyond the grasp of a church life (or death?) survey. But my hunch is that there is a certain amnesia developing among us. So my question is: do we have a problem with the saints? How do we honour them? What are we to do with them? Aren't we all saints anyway, canonised at our baptism?

Achieve Work-Life Balance
2017
Finding balance in life is a challenge for almost all of them. It's something that most of them want, but few of them put conscious effort into achieving. Many companies and organizations have policies to help their employees achieve work-life balance. These policies are a good way to attract and retain talented people, as workplace flexibility that enables employees to pursue personal endeavors is a priority and expectation for many. Technology, however, makes it harder and harder to separate work and life. Few of them step away from their cellphones for extended periods of time, making them available via email, text message, telephone, or even social media at almost any hour of the day. Although work-life balance has become more difficult, millennials cite work-life balance as a top priority. Here are some easy things you can do now to get started: 1. disconnecting, 2. scheduling life like you schedule work, 3. using your vacation days, and 4. using your time at work efficiently.

President's Corner New Business in a New Year
2015
To many of us, a new year signals a fresh start, a new beginning, a time to roll out the old and usher in the new. The reality is that time is a continuum, and there's nothing magical about turning the calendar page to a new number. For me, however, the first day of 2015 is the first day of my AIChE presidency, a role I take on with excitement, awe, and a deep sense of responsibility to the profession and to the global chemical engineering community. AIChE has a tradition of strong, dedicated, leadership that I intend to uphold, and a growing family of chemical engineering professionals who deserve the best I can bring to the AIChE presidency.
