Sociology and social policy : essays on community, economy, and society
This collection of recent essays by the influential sociologist Herbert J. Gans brings together the many themes of Gans's wide-ranging career to make the case for a policy-oriented vision for sociology. Sociology and Social Policy presents a range of studies from across Gans's areas of interest--the city, poverty, ethnicity, employment and political economy, and the relationship between race and class--that together make a powerful call to action.\"--Page 4 of cover.
POZA MODEL DRE, CZYLI CZEGO SOCJOLOGIA MOŻE SIĘ NAUCZYĆ OD PODEJŚCIA PROJEKTANCKIEGO
In this paper, we reconstruct the dominant sociological approach to solving social problems. we argue that sociology predominantly focuses on three activities: diagnosing, recommending, and emancipating (hence the “DRE model”). we propose that sociology can engage in solving social problems differently. to characterise an alternative to the DRE model, we refer to some historical traditions (PaR in particular) within sociology and one external approach: design thinking. we state that design thinking and the DRE model differ from each other in four fundamental points: (1) the role of intervention in the processes of knowledge creation, (2) the granulation of problems, (3) the approach to iteration, (4) dedication to creating actionable knowledge.

SZUKAJĄC MIEJSCA DLA SOCJOLOGII. POMIĘDZY TRWANIEM W ZMIANIE A EMANCYPACYJNYM POTENCJAŁEM NIEZMIENNOŚCI
We would like to draw attention to the fetishisation of change in sociology and identify its sources, tracing this imbalance as symptomatic of how we think about and study social reality. We will also consider the possible consequences of preferring this kind of one-sided perspective, noting that one of the paradoxical consequences of its practice is the loss of the significant cognitive potential inherent in the category of immutability. To recover it, we would like to determine how immu- tability can be apprehended and identify its possible aspects, dimensions and forms. We are also interested in showing what it gives us to look at social reality from the perspective of this concept by looking at such critical categories in sociology as action or causality. We are also interested in the ambivalent nature of immutability, meaning, that it is at the same time a basis, a foundation, but also something not eliminated; something that gives security, a sense of continuity, but also something over which we have no influence; something that offers a basis for action, but also means rigidity, difficulty in adaptation. An essential aspect of our article is also the question of whether looking at social reality from the perspective of immutability necessarily pushes researchers toward reactionary, conservative and universalist positions.
Public sociology
In 2004, Michael Burawoy, speaking as president of the American Sociological Association, generated far-reaching controversy when he issued an ambitious and impassioned call for a \"public sociology.\" Burawoy argued that sociology should speak beyond the university, engaging with social movements and deepening an understanding of the historical and social context in which they exist. In this volume, renowned sociologists come together to debate the perils and the potentials of Burawoy's challenge. Genome Editing in Bacteria (Part 1)
This reference is a comprehensive review of genome editing in bacteria. The multi-part book meticulously consolidates research findings and insights on the applications of bacteria across several industries, including food processing and pharmaceutical development. The book covers four overarching themes for readers: a historical perspective of genome editing, genome editing in probiotics, applications of genome editing in agricultural microbiology and genetic engineering in environmental microbiology. The editors have also compiled chapters that provide an in-depth analysis of gene regulation and metabolic engineering through genome editing tools for specific bacteria. Key topics in part 1: - An Overview of advances in CRISPR-CAS research - Applications of CRISPR/CAS9-based genome editing for industrial microorganisms - Gut microbiome modulation to address gut dysbiosis - Bifidobacterium genome editing for probiotic development and metabolic engineering. - Insights into the use of lactic acid bacteria as starter cultures in the food - Genome editing of vegetable-derived L. Plantarum - Genome editing in Bacillus Licheniformis Genome Editing in Bacteria is a definitive reference for scholars, researchers and industry professionals navigating the forefront of bacterial genomics. Readership Scholars and professionals interested in bacterial genomics.
