Legal translation is hallmarked by peculiarities revolving around language intricacies, particular formulae, and system-specificity issues. At present, there is a spectrum of legal corpora dedicated to court-related topics and legislation, but there is no corpus composed of private legal documents such as contracts and agreements. This book wishes to bridge this gap by providing English-Italian comparable corpora related to the domain of (general) terms and conditions of service, together with a model for their use in the translation classroom. It offers a novel contribution to the scientific community as it makes corpora of private legal documents available for consultation. In addition, it shows that legal corpora built by following rigorous methods can become reliable tools in translator training and, most likely, in translation practice. This book is for students in Translation Studies, professional translators, researchers and scholars in legal language and legal translation, as well as legal practitioners and lawyers.
Translanguaging : language, bilingualism and education
The emergence over the last 10 years of the analytic concept, 'Translanguaging', has had a forceful impact on the field of Applied Linguistics. This book addresses how it has contributed to our understandings of language, bilingualism and education. Ofelia García and Li Wei trace the development of the theory of Translanguaging and consider its relationship with traditional theories and models of language and bilingualism. Based on practices by students and teachers in a variety of educational contexts, this book describes how Translanguaging is used by bilingual learners to learn and by teachers to teach. Ultimately, the book affirms the transformative nature of Translanguaging; it involves the act of languaging between and beyond systems that have previously been described as separate, and in so doing, new meanings emerge and new understandings are generated, transforming not only semiotic systems and speaker subjectivities, but also social structures.

This paper investigates the extent to which Arabic punctuation is rule-governed, with the aim of improving text comprehension, disambiguation, and machine translation. The study highlights the lack of systematic punctuation in Arabic written discourse, which may be attributed to difficulties in sentence boundary identification or inadequate differentiation between various conjunctions. The punctuation behavior of Arabic speakers is examined in relation to sentence boundary identification and the level of agreement among Arabic specialists is assessed. A quantitative analysis of paragraph and sentence lengths across genres, categories of writers, and in comparison to English is conducted using five corpora specifically compiled for this study. Additionally, a punctuation survey is carried out to evaluate specialists’ agreement on sentence boundary identification. The results indicate that writers of Arabic interpret punctuation rules differently and that Arabic punctuation practice is irregular. The study suggests that standardization of Arabic punctuation rules is necessary to facilitate comprehension and automatic text processing.

The 2021 AILA World Congress featured 200 + thematic symposia, featuring presentations from thousands of experienced researchers and emerging scholars. It was this broad representation that Symposium 181, The Third Wind of Language Learning Strategies Research, endeavored to represent. Organized by Nathan Thomas and Heath Rose, the symposium consisted of seven talks framed by opening remarks and further discussion by the organizers. Each selected presentation focused on pushing the field of language learning strategies in new directions: theoretically, methodologically, and/or pedagogically. This article highlights the four presentations most relevant to the theme.

The importance of academic journals in second language (L2) research is evident on at least two levels. Journals are, first of all, central to the process of disseminating scientific findings. Journals are also critical on a professional level as most L2 researchers must publish articles to advance their careers. However, not all journals are perceived as equal; some may be considered more prestigious or of higher quality and may, therefore, achieve a greater impact on the field. It is therefore necessary that we understand the identity and quality of L2 research journals, yet very little research (e.g., Egbert, 2007; VanPatten Williams, 2002) has considered these issues to date. The current study sought to explore L2 journal identity and quality, and the relationship between these constructs. In order to do so, a database was compiled based on three different types of sources: (1) a questionnaire eliciting L2 researchers’ perceptions of the quality and prestige of 27 journals that publish L2 research (N = 327); (2) manual coding of different types of articles (e.g., empirical studies, review papers), data (quantitative, qualitative, mixed), research settings, and authorship patterns (K = 2,024) using the same 27 journals; and (3) bibliometric and submission data such as impact factors, citation counts, and acceptance rates. Descriptive statistics were applied to explore overall quality and prestige ratings as well as publication trends found in each journal. The relationships between those patterns and subjective ratings were also examined. In addition, regression models were built to determine the extent to which perceptions of journal quality and prestige could be explained as a function of journal and article features. We discuss the findings of the study in terms of on-going debates concerning publication practices, study quality, impact factors, journal selection, and the “journal culture” in applied linguistics.
