More Argentine than you : Arabic-speaking immigrants in Argentina
\"Whether in search of adventure and opportunity or fleeing poverty and violence, millions of people migrated to Argentina in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. By the late 1920s Arabic speakers were one of the country's largest immigrant groups. This book explores their experience, which was quite different from the danger and deprivation faced by twenty-first-century immigrants from the Middle East. Hyland shows how Syrians and Lebanese, Christians, Jews, and Muslims adapted to local social and political conditions, entered labor markets, established community institutions, raised families, and attempted to pursue their individual dreams and community goals. By showing how societies can come to terms with new arrivals and their descendants, Hyland addresses notions of belonging and acceptance, of integration and opportunity. He tells a story of immigrants and a story of Argentina that is at once timely and timeless\"--Provided by publisher.

Así mismo, se identificó la ausencia de conflictos étnico-religiosos entre ellos. this article reconstructed clashes between Syrian-Lebanese immigrants over trade issues and the occupation of public lands in the northwest of Chubut, in the context of Argentine Patagonia, during the first half of the 20th century. Various sources were used to follow-up conflicts: court records, inspections by the General Directorate of Lands, documents produced by the Chubut governorate, and interviews with descendants, among others. Through this type of documentary evidence, the effective trajectories of the actors involved in the conflicts were reconstructed. The reported cases showed that conflicts between members of the Arab community were frequent, as they fought over goods, money, commercial territories and livestock resources. It was argued that, contrary to what is generally assumed in most historiographical background, Syrian-Lebanese immigrants were not a homogeneous and highly cohesive migratory group. On the contrary, these actors were often antagonistic towards each other, and resolved their differences through the use of violence, or police and judicial mediation.

The Chimera of Palestinian Resettlement in Argentina in the Early Aftermath of the First Arab-Israeli War and Other Similarly Fantastic Notions
1996
Just as the Nazi destruction of European Jewry during World War II led to the dramatic dissemination of the realities of genocide in the 1940s, so a painful corollary to the more recent breakdown of the former Soviet Union and Yugoslavia has been the all too familiar newsworthiness of the concept of ethnic cleansing, i.e., the forcible and unheroic eviction of undesired groups. The practice of applying varying degrees of coercion and/or violence to purge national, religious and other minorities, though, is far older than the inception of either of the aforementioned multiethnic states, let alone their disintegration, and it is not limited to these particular countries. Such a dilemma—the presence of implacable competitors for political supremacy over the same territory—is a position with certain similarities to that of Palestine and early Israel in the first half of this century, especially after binational and other minimalist solutions were deemed irrelevant by the respective mainstreams of the Jewish and Palestinian national movements.
