Domesticity and Design in American Women’s Lives and Literature explores the ways in which four American women writers from the mid-nineteenth to the early-twentieth century inhabited domestic space and portrayed it in their work. Hellman explores independent female authors who had intriguing and autonomous relationships with home, relocating frequently either to begin the creative processes of designing and decorating anew or to avoid domestic obligation altogether by remaining in transit. She also looks at how women authors wrote female characters into existence who had strikingly different relationships with home, and contended with profound burdens of housekeeping in an oppressive domestic sphere. The disjunction between the authors' individual existences and the characters to whom they gave life reveals multiple narratives about women at home in nineteenth- and twentieth- century America. This interdisciplinary inquiry undertakes a dual treatment of domesticity in an effort to synthesize a more complete understanding of the relationships between social history and literary accomplishment. Syncretising domestic literature with domestic practice, Hellman appraises the ways in which the authors appropriate domestic rhetoric to address issues of political import: economy, health, and social welfare in the case of Stowe, material feminism for Alcott, the landscape for Cather, and World War I for Wharton.

Little White Houses

A rare exploration of the racial and class politics of architecture, Little White Houses examines how postwar media representations associated the ordinary single-family house with middle-class whites to the exclusion of others, creating a powerful and invidious cultural iconography that continues to resonate today. Drawing from popular and trade magazines, floor plans and architectural drawings, television programs, advertisements, and beyond, Dianne Harris shows how the depiction of houses and their interiors, furnishings, and landscapes shaped and reinforced the ways in which Americans perceived white, middle-class identities and helped support a housing market already defined by racial segregation and deep economic inequalities.After describing the ordinary postwar house and its orderly, prescribed layout, Harris analyzes how cultural iconography associated these houses with middle-class whites and an ideal of white domesticity. She traces how homeowners were urged to buy specific kinds of furniture and other domestic objects and how the appropriate storage and display of these possessions was linked to race and class by designers, tastemakers, and publishers. Harris also investigates lawns, fences, indoor-outdoor spaces, and other aspects of the postwar home and analyzes their contribution to the assumption that the rightful owners of ordinary houses were white.Richly detailed, Little White Houses adds a new dimension to our understanding of race in America and the inequalities that persist in the U.S. housing market.
The Archaeology of Houses and Households in the Native Southeast

southeastern United States from the Woodland to the Historic
Indian period (ca. 200 BC to 1800 AD)
The Archaeology of Houses and Households in the Native
Southeast contributes enormously to the study of household
archaeology and domestic architecture in the region. This
significant volume combines both previously published and
unpublished data on communities from the Southeast and is the
first systematic attempt to understand the development of houses
and households as interpreted through a theoretical framework
developed from broad-ranging studies in cultural anthropology and
archaeology. Steere’s major achievement is the compilation
of one of the largest and most detailed architectural datasets
for the Southeast, including data for 1,258 domestic and public
structures from 65 archaeological sites in North Carolina,
Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, and the southern parts of
Missouri, Indiana, and Illinois. Rare data from hard-to-find
cultural resource management reports is also incorporated,
creating a broad temporal and geographic scope and serving as one
of many remarkable features of the book, which is sure to be of
considerable value to archaeologists and anthropologists
interested in comparative studies of architecture. Similar to
other analyses, Steere’s research uses multiple theoretical
angles and lines of evidence to answer archaeological questions
about houses and the people who built them. However, unlike other
examinations of household archaeology, this project spans
multiple time periods (Woodland, Mississippian, and Historic); is
focused squarely on the Southeast; features a more unified
approach, using data from a single, uniform database; and
privileges domestic architecture as a line of evidence for
reconstructing daily life at major archaeological sites on a much
broader scale than other investigations.

The transformation of average Americans' domestic lives,
revealed through the mechanical innovations and physical
improvements of their homes At the turn of the nineteenth
century, the average American family still lived by kerosene light,
ate in the kitchen, and used an outhouse. By 1940, electric lights,
dining rooms, and bathrooms were the norm as the traditional
working-class home was fast becoming modern-a fact largely missing
from the story of domestic innovation and improvement in
twentieth-century America, where such benefits seem to count
primarily among the upper classes and the post-World War II
denizens of suburbia. Examining the physical evidence of America's
working-class houses, Thomas C. Hubka revises our understanding of
how widespread domestic improvement transformed the lives of
Americans in the modern era. His work, focused on the broad central
portion of the housing population, recalibrates longstanding ideas
about the nature and development of the \"middle class\" and its new
measure of improvement, \"standards of living.\"

These improvements were intertwined with the acquisition of
entirely new mechanical conveniences, new types of rooms and

housing-are at the center of the story Hubka tells. It is a
narrative, amply illustrated and finely detailed, that traces
changes in household hygiene, sociability, and privacy practices
that launched large portions of the working classes into the middle
class-and that, in Hubka's telling, reconfigures and enriches the
standard account of the domestic transformation of the American
