2025
The social behavior of people is reflected through spatial configurations. Traditionally, reproductive work and caregiving tasks have been spatially assigned by gender and often go unnoticed. With the rise of middle-income housing in Mexico, an important question arises: how do these housing layouts integrate reproductive and care tasks, particularly in kitchens and laundry areas? To investigate this, the paper focuses on five Mexican cities known for significant middle-income housing production—Guadalajara, Mexico City, Monterrey, Querétaro, and Toluca—and selected 25 case studies consisting of five model homes from each city. By applying space syntax and the Justified plan graph, the paper mathematically and graphically analyses these homes to map spatial inequalities. The findings reveal that laundry areas have a low integration, similar to bathrooms. On the other hand, public and private spaces meet in kitchen, leading to better gender integration.

Architecture
2024
Generative design tools are occasionally employed in architecture to produce shapes. They can also provide researchers with different analysis capabilities by enabling new approaches and interpretations of case studies. This contribution presents the research on some artworks of the Chilean surrealist artist Roberto Matta Echaurren (1911–2002) using software applications coded with the Processing creative programming language. The selected works belong to Matta’s spatial exploration dating between 1936 and 1938 and consist of six architectural illustrations and the essay ‘Mathématique sensible—Architecture du temps’ (1938). The methodology employed in developing these applications entails digitally analyzing the artist’s work by extracting computable elements and subjecting them to computing mechanisms (sorting, combinations, randomization, etc.) that produce configurations similar to those designed by Matta.

2023
Design and artwork driven by image sampling processing has a half-century tradition in contemporary art and computer graphics. In the past two decades, a similar approach has been used for the fabrication of abstract surface patterns for building facades. Recent advances in digital manufacturing based on industrial robots have reignited the interest toward developing new design-to-fabrication techniques which can possess intriguing visual and tectonic properties of the facades, based on image sampling processing and abstract image representation. The aim of the paper is to investigate the different strategies for creating surface patterns, based on image sampling and applying industrial robots as fabrication tools. In this paper, three different robotic fabrication strategies for generating surface patterns driven by image sampling are presented.

Transformation of Geometry from 2D to 3D: Revisiting Origami in a Digital Design Course
2024
In this study, the importance of origami in transforming 2D patterns into 3D objects is highlighted. Within a design workshop, projects of architecture graduate students were evaluated, focusing on the conversion of 2D patterns to 3D using various tools. The workshop consisted of two stages. In the first stage, students created basic geometric shapes such as spheres, cubes, and ellipses using the origami technique with A4 and A5 papers, and transformed them from 2D to 3D through practical tessellation processes. In the second stage, students were instructed in basic folding techniques using Rhino-Grasshopper software, enabling them to digitally model the transformation from 2D tessellation to 3D structures using the origami technique. The study examined these processes, considering variations in tessellation methods, the influence of material knowledge on tessellation processes, and the impact of material characteristics on form finding.
