Since antiquity through to the present, architecture and the pictorial arts (paintings, photography, graphic arts) have not been rigidly separated but interrelated - the one informing the other, and establishing patterns of creation and reception. In the classical tradition the education of the architect and artist has always stressed this relationship between the arts, although modern scholarship has too often treated them as separate disciplines. These volumes explore the history of this exchange between the arts as it emerged from classical theory into artistic and architectural practice.

The architecture of art history : a historiography
Many disciplines have a stake in the history of architecture - sociology, anthropology, human geography, to name a few. This book deals with perhaps the most influential tradition of all - art history - examining how the relation between the disciplines of art history and architectural history has waxed and waned over the last one hundred and fifty years. In this study, Mark Crinson and Richard J. Williams point to a decline in the importance attributed to the role of architecture in art history over the last century - which has happened without crisis or self-reflection. The book explores the problem in relation to key art historical approaches, from formalism, to feminism, to the social history of art, and in key institutions from the Museum of Modern Art, to the journal October. Among the key thinkers explored are Banham, Baxandall, Giedion, Panofsky, Pevsner, Pollock, Riegl, Rowe, Steinberg, Wittkower and Woelfflin. Trading between architecture and art : strategies and practices of exchange
Since the 1960s, art and architecture have experienced a series of radical and reciprocal trades. Just as artists have simulated \"architectural\" means like plans and models, built structures and pavilions, or intervened in urban and public spaces, architects have employed \"artistic\" strategies in art institutions, exhibitions, and more. Architecture and the virtual

Architecture and the Virtual is a study of architecture as it is reflected in the work of seven contemporary artists, working with the tools of our post- digital age. The book maps the convergence of virtual space and contemporary conceptual art and is an anthropological exploration of artists who deal with transformable space and work through analogue means of image production. Marta Jecu builds her inquiry around interviews with artists and curators in order to explore how these works create the experience of the virtual in architecture. Performativity and neo-conceptualism play important roles in this process and in the efficiency with which these works act in the social space.
