Small Laser-Textured Dimples for Improved Tribological Performance of CoCrMo in Artificial Hip Joints
This study investigates the impact of small dimples on the tribological properties of CoCrMo (CCM) surfaces. Laser-ablated textures with 5 µm diameter dimples were fabricated at varying aspect ratios (0.1, 0.2, 0.3) and surface densities (5%, 15%, 25%) to evaluate their effects on friction and wear when paired with ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) counterfaces. The results showed that small dimples significantly reduced and stabilized the coefficient of friction (CoF) and wear compared to untextured CCM and larger dimples as reported in the literature. The texture configuration with a 5% surface density and 0.1 aspect ratio achieved the best combination of friction and wear performance by facilitating the formation of a stable and uniform lubricant film during sliding. These findings underscore the potential of small, precisely engineered surface textures to improve the tribological performance of CCM, offering a promising approach for reducing friction and wear in artificial hip joints.

Total hip arthroplasty with monobloc press-fit acetabular components and large-diameter bearings for atypical acetabula is safe: a consecutive case series of 125 hips with mean follow-up of 9 years
Méthodes : Pour cette série de cas consécutifs, nous avons utilisé la base de données locale sur les arthroplasties afin d'identifier rétrospectivement les personnes atteintes d'arthrose secondaire ayant subi entre 2005 et 2018 une arthroplastie primaire pour prothèse de hanche avec composants acétabulaires LDH monoblocs et fixation pressfit uniquement, et qui ont pu être suivis pendant une période d'au moins 2 ans. Au moment du dernier suivi, des radiographies ont été effectuées et nous avons évalué les mesures des résultats déclarés par la patientèle (MRDP) au moyen de l'indice WOMAC (indice d'évaluation de l'arthrose des Universités Western Ontario et McMaster), du score de l'articulation oubliée (FJS, pour Forgotten Joint Score), et de la question sur la perception articulaire PJP (Patient's Joint Perception).

Impact of periprosthetic femoral fractures on frailty, mobility and outcomes in hip arthroplasty
The demand for total hip arthroplasty and hemiarthroplasty is rising, increasing the incidence of periprosthetic femoral fractures. This study aimed to assess clinical outcomes, including mortality, length of stay, and the impact of periprosthetic femoral fractures on mobility and frailty at one-year follow-up. A retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data was conducted looking at periprosthetic femoral fractures at a tertiary referral center from 2018 to 2024. The data collected included comorbidities, fracture classification, treatment method, length of stay, and discharge destination. The mortality rates at 30 days and one year were calculated. Mobility and frailty were assessed via the New Mobility Score and Clinical Frailty Scale before fracture and at one year. Statistical analysis included chi-square and Wilcoxon signed rank tests. A total of n = 79 patients met the inclusion criteria (mean age 79.6 ± 9.5 years). There was a preponderance of females (35:44, M: F, p = 0.311). Vancouver B2 was the most common fracture pattern (n = 38). Surgical fixation was performed in n = 58 patients. Mortality rate at 30-day and one-year were 7.5% (n = 6) and 16.4% (n = 12) respectively. The mean Charlson Comorbidity Index was 4.39, with a score greater than 5 associated with higher one-year mortality (p = 0.031). Nursing home residency increased by 16%. The median New Mobility Score decreased from 7 to 5 (p < 0.001). The median Clinical Frailty Scale score increased from 4 to 5 (p < 0.001). Periprosthetic femoral fractures affect elderly, comorbid patients and are associated with high mortality. We observed measurable and significant decreases in mobility and frailty. Prompt treatment and early mobilization should be prioritized to improve outcomes.
Minimizing Risk of Failure from Ceramic-on-Ceramic Total Hip Prosthesis by Selecting Ceramic Materials Based on Tresca Stress
The choice of ceramic-on-ceramic coupling in total hip prosthesis has advantages over couplings with other combinations of materials that use polyethylene and metal materials in terms of high hardness, scratch resistance, low wear rate, and increased lubrication performance. To reduce the risk of primary postoperative failure, the selection of ceramic materials for ceramic-on-ceramic coupling is a strategic step that needs to be taken. The current study aims to analyze ceramic-on-ceramic coupling with commonly used ceramic materials, namely zirconium dioxide (ZrO2), silicon nitride (Si3N4), and aluminium oxide (Al2O3), according to Tressa failure criterion for the investigation of the stress distribution. A two-dimensional axisymmetric finite element-based computational model has been used to evaluate the Tresca stress on ceramic-on-ceramic coupling under gait cycle. The results show that the use of ZrO2-on-ZrO2 couplings can reduce Tresca stress by about 17.34% and 27.23% for Si3N4-on-Si3N4 and Al2O3-on-Al2O3 couplings, respectively.
