Innovation - changing the tools of the trade : opinion
Creativity and engineering are two words not generally seen together. Engineering is inherently conservative, for good reason. A civil engineer designing a bridge, or even a traffic signal plan, would risk causing death and destruction if the design were unconstrained by strict codes of practice.
Building design at ARUP
The idea of designing, planning and building as an inseparable process The idea of \"Total Architecture\", as described by Ove Arup in his vision of design, continues to serve as the maxim for the globally operating engineering firm ARUP and its Building Engineering Department.
Broadgate
Situated on the fringe of the City of London, the Broadgate development transformed a site comprising a former train station (Broad Street Station) and an adjacent operational station (Liverpool Street Station) into a major new financial district. Arup Associates ingeniously conceived a masterplan that considered the former rail estate as a publicly accessible and future piece of London, both on terra firma and above the tracks of the renovated Liverpool Street Station. Broadgate is now considered to have started a revolution in corporate architecture and urban design. As an extreme example of brownfield redevelopment and densification, it showcases what can be profitably achieved even without public subsidies with the backdrop of very high land values. The promiscuous connection to a railway station has an almost poetic dimension, symbolising the multiple paradoxes of the urban condition and the constant struggle between silence and noise, transport and inertia, remoteness and exchange.
