Fighting Invisibility
In Fighting Invisibility, Monica Mong Trieu argues that we must consider the role of physical and symbolic space to fully understand the nuances of Asian American racialization. By doing this, we face questions such as, historically, who has represented Asian America? Who gets to represent Asian America? This book shifts the primary focus to Midwest Asian America to disrupt—and expand beyond—the existing privileged narratives in United States and Asian American history. Drawing from in-depth interviews, census data, and cultural productions from Asian Americans in Ohio, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, and Michigan, this interdisciplinary research examines how post-1950s Midwest Asian Americans navigate identity and belonging, racism, educational settings, resources within co-ethnic communities, and pan-ethnic cultural community. Their experiences and life narratives are heavily framed by three pervasive themes of spatially defined isolation, invisibility, and racialized visibility. Fighting Invisibility makes an important contribution to racialization literature, while also highlighting the necessity to further expand the scope of Asian American history-telling and knowledge production.

This concluding passage reflects on the four chapters by looking at how racial jouissance persists, rebounds, and expands. These Asian American narratives all contain ethical acts of confronting the alien at the core of the nation, as well as within the core of the human. The process of Americanization is a traumatic disturbance for many of its subjects and objects. It is not simply an act of exclusion or inclusion, but instead a harsh rendering into the external intimate or extimate. The so-called “inhuman citizenship” refers to this traumatic incorporation and ex-corporation by the imperial nation-state, as well as the acts of manifestation, circulation, and transmission of its symptoms of jouissance.
The Politics of the Visible in Asian North American Narratives
Examining nine Asian Canadian and Asian American narratives, Eleanor Ty explores how authors empower themselves, represent differences, and re-script their identities as 'visible minorities' within the ideological, imaginative, and discursive space given to them by dominant culture. In various ways, Asian North Americans negotiate daily with 'birthmarks,' their shared physical features marking them legally, socially, and culturally as visible outsiders, and paradoxically, as invisible to mainstream history and culture. Ty argues that writers such as Denise Chong, Shirley Geok-lin Lim, and Wayson Choy recast the marks of their bodies and challenge common perceptions of difference based on the sights, smells, dress, and other characteristics of their hyphenated lives. Others, like filmmaker Mina Shum and writers Bienvenido Santos and Hiromi Goto, challenge the means by which Asian North American subjects are represented and constructed in the media and in everyday language. Through close readings grounded in the socio-historical context of each work, Ty studies the techniques of various authors and filmmakers in their meeting of the gaze of dominant culture and their response to the assumptions and meanings commonly associated with Orientalized, visible bodies.
Homogenized and stigmatized: A discourse analysis of Asian sub-ethnic medical school aspirants
The study examines the influence of Asian sub-ethnic identity on the experiences of pre-medical students in the United States and Canada, aiming to understand how early interactions with the medical education system shape their pursuit of medicine. The researchers analyzed 132 discussion threads from popular online premedical school forums between June 2018 and 2023. The Asian Critical Theory framework guided the analysis along with cyclical inductive coding. Two major themes emerged: the homogenization of diverse Asian sub-ethnicities and external pressure related to sociocultural values. Terms like “over-represented minorities” contributed to the perception of Asians as a monolithic group, while expressions such as “Asian Parents” highlighted unique familial expectations. Non-Asian users often dismissed these barriers, reinforcing the model minority myth. The study emphasizes the negative consequences of framing Asians as a homogenous group in medical school admissions policies, perpetuating stereotypes, and overlooking the diversity within Asian sub-ethnic communities. The term “overrepresented” is critiqued for its role in homogenizing Asian identities and undermining the complexity of their experiences. These findings highlight the need for greater recognition of the nuanced challenges faced by Asian sub-ethnic medical trainees and the importance of dismantling stereotypes in medical education.
Racing Romance
Despite being far from the norm, interracial relationships are more popular than ever. Racing Romance sheds special light on the bonds between whites and Asian Americans, an important topic that has not garnered well-deserved attention until now. Incorporating life-history narratives and interviews with those currently or previously involved with an interracial partner, Kumiko Nemoto addresses the contradictions and tensionsùa result of race, class, and genderùthat Asian Americans and whites experience.Similar to black/white relationships, stereotypes have long played crucial roles in Asian American/white encounters. Partners grapple with media representations of Asian women as submissive or hypersexual and Asian men are often portrayed as weak laborers or powerful martial artists. Racing Romance reveals how allegedly progressive interracial relationships remain firmly shaped by the logic of patriarchy and gender inherent to the ideal of marriage, family, and nation in America, even as this ideal is juxtaposed with discourses of multiculturalism and color blindness.
“There’s Something There in That Hyphen”: The Lived Experiences of Asian and Asian American Higher Education Students in the Southwest Borderlands of the United States
For centuries, Asians living in the U.S. have had to negotiate between the narratives that dominant society has imposed upon them and their understanding of what it means to be Asian and Asian American. When combined with the hierarchies of racial categories, the narratives underlying monoracialism are inherently limiting, obscuring their nuanced experiences, and stripping them of their ability to express the personal constructions of their identity The purpose of this qualitative case study was to elevate the voices of Asians and Asian Americans, their process of “inventing” their identity, and how their conceptualizations begin to deconstruct and challenge monoracialism. I argue that Asians and Asian Americans engage in a process where the interpretation and revision of meaning that emerges during interactions with others can illuminate the role of master narratives and how they negotiate between these structural factors and their ideas of what it means to be Asian or Asian American. The findings suggest a negotiation between master narratives at the macro-, meso-, and micro-societal levels that help them understand what it means to be Asian and Asian American.
Racial Stereotypes and Counter-Narratives in Children’s Literature: Critical Content Analysis Using AsianCrit
This study examines the representations of Asian American children and their families in children’s literature, utilizing Asian Critical Race Theory (AsianCrit) to analyze stereotypical portrayals and emphasize counter-narratives. In this study, we conducted a critical content analysis to identify themes in the underlying messages in the children’s literature. As a result, we identified four themes among the selected literature: (1) stereotypical representation of Asian American children and families, (2) counter-narratives against the perpetual foreigner myth, (3) counter-narratives against the model minority myth, and (4) literature as spaces for honoring Asian American voices. Our findings highlight the need to critically examine race discourse in children’s literature to acknowledge and validate the diverse experiences of Asian Americans, moving beyond the model minority and perpetual foreigner myths.
Tricksters and Cosmopolitans: Cross-Cultural Collaborations in Asian American Literary Production
Tricksters and Cosmopolitans is the first sustained exploration into the history of cross-cultural collaborations between Asian American writers and their non-Asian American editors and publishers. The volume focuses on the literary production of the cosmopolitan subject, featuring the writers Sui Sin Far, Jessica Hagedorn, Karen Tei Yamashita, Monique Truong, and Min Jin Lee. The newly imagined cosmopolitan subject that emerges from their works dramatically reconfigured Asian American female subjectivity in metropolitan space with a kind of fluidity and ease never before seen. But as Rei Magosaki shows, these narratives also invariably expose the problematic side of this figure, which also serves to perpetuate exploitative structures of Western imperialism and its legacies in late capitalism. Arguing that the actual establishment of such a critical standpoint on imperialism and globalization required the expansive and internationalist vision of editors who supported, cultivated, and promoted these works, Tricksters and Cosmopolitans reveals the negotiations between these authors and their publishers and between the shared investment in both politics and aesthetics that influenced the narrative structure of key works in the Asian American literary canon.
