When I use a word . . . . Medical counterfactuals
A counterfactual statement or narrative, originally a philosophical concept, expresses an assessment of what might have happened if certain unfulfilled conditions had actually occurred. “If this happened [instead of what actually happened] that would have occurred as a result [instead of what actually occurred].” In this statement, the protasis [“If this happened”] is false and the apodosis [“that would have occurred …”] is therefore indeterminable. The use of counterfactual ideas is a popular device in fiction, and there are many examples. However, some regard counterfactual speculation as more than just an entertaining game, considering it also a mode of historical analysis, which might, for example, promote reflection on past actions, suggest possible causes of outcomes, and lead to different actions in the future, or lead to the repetition of previously successful strategies, avoiding other possibilities. In medical practice counterfactual considerations are relevant to the testing of hypotheses, the conduct of clinical trials, and the use of the Precautionary Principle when contemplating preventive or therapeutic interventions.
Reaper : ghost target
\"The explosive new thriller series written by Nicholas Irving, the New York Times bestselling author of The Reaper and star of Fox's American Grit. American hero, or unhinged vigilante? In Reaper: Ghost Target, Vick \"The Reaper\" Harwood is an esteemed sniper with a record kill count--33 kills in 90 days--when he is knocked out under mortar attack in Afghanistan. He wakes up back in the United States with little memory of what happened, his spotter and gun both unrecovered from the battlefield. Harwood has resigned himself to slowly picking up the pieces of his life, training Special Forces snipers in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and starting a promising relationship with an Olympic medalist named Jackie. But when a series of assassinations start occurring in the area, Harwood can't explain why he just happens to be nearby for each killing--or how a sniper rifle that matches the description of the one he lost seems to be involved. His memory of the past few days is hazy and full of blackouts, and even he has to wonder, is he being framed? Or is he the killer? As Harwood runs from the authorities, his girlfriend falls off the radar, his missing spotter resurfaces, and the assassinated men are outed as drug and sex traffickers. Nothing is adding up. Harwood realizes he has to unravel this mystery, and fast, or find himself paying the ultimate price for crimes he may not have committed\"-- Provided by publisher.
Living in Death: The New Dystopian Reality of Israeli Settler Colonialism in Gaza
The contemporary case of settler colonialism in Palestine/Israel generates debates about the different types of violence - physical, territorial, and mental - experienced by the Palestinians. For more than 15 years, the Gaza Strip has been under blockade and isolated from the other Palestinian territories and the world. This reality has led to interpretations of Gaza as a laboratory, where remote-controlled weapons and the limits of human survival are tested. This makes Gazans use expressions such as 'slow death' or 'living death' to describe their lives. This article analyses six short stories from the science fiction book 'Palestine +100: Stories from a century after the Nakba' (2019) to investigate how the Israeli settler colonialism impacts Palestinian fictional production on Gaza. We argue that the persistence of the Nakba in the Palestinian present through continued expulsions, destruction and assassinations by Israel has made life an everyday dystopia. Furthermore, it made Palestinians' imaginations regarding their future no longer utopian dreams of liberation, but dystopian and cyclical nightmares of confinement and death. Living eternally in the nightmare, as observed in Palestinian artistic productions, works as a colonial counterrevolutionary strategy. In this bleak reality, Gazans are leftwith the alternative of 'living in death.'

A Gnostic Noir: Y.B.'s Explication of the Algerian Crisis
The Algerian writer Y.B. (Yassir Benmiloud) originally established himself as a satirical journalist and critic of the Algerian regime before publishing his first novel, L'Explication , from exile in Paris in 1999. Although it was met with a relative lack of critical attention, reserved more for his third novel Allah Superstar (2003), which examines the place of Muslims in post 9/11 France, L'Explication is a dynamic reimagining of noir that \"others\" the classically Western genre. While respecting many of the tropes of detective and noir fiction, including the gradual unveiling of the criminals and their motives for murder, an investigator-focused narrative, temporal doubling, and sassy one-liners, L'Explication deviates from reader expectations with its autobiographical elements, hybridity, and its refusal to provide a rational resolution to the investigation. The novel is imbued with a Sufi mystical structure and ideology that exist uncomfortably alongside, and call into question, French rationalism, the underpinning of a classical detective story. Y.B.'s criminal investigation proceeds along unexpected lines to become an esoteric interpretation of the history of Islam in North Africa and the rise of Algeria's cabinet noir during the 1990s civil war. This article will show that L'Explication is at once a detective novel and a parody of both that genre and of Islamic exegesis. The parodic elements allow Y.B. to circumvent censure, while offering an indirect means of giving voice to national trauma as he endeavors to explain the seemingly inexplicable Algerian civil war.
John Kennedy Sometimes Hallucinates Brings A New Spin to Shireen Abu Akleh's Journey
Yusri Al-Ghoul, an award-winning Palestinian writer and storyteller, was born in Gaza in 1980, where he also had his education. Al-Ghoul just released a new series of stories in his book John Kennedy Sometimes Hallucinates, published by the Beirut-based Arab Institute for Research & Publishing. The book, written in Arabic, evokes the media blackout of Palestine by reimagining a naked fiction infused with a reality that is hardly covered in Western media. Here, Omer relates the idea of the story series.
