The Assassination of Jacques Lemaigre Dubreuil
2005,2004
This is a political biography of the French industrialist and political activist Jacques Lemaigre Dubreuil (1894-1955), president of the Taxpayers' Federation in the 1930s, entrepreneur in wartime France and Africa, organizer of the 'Group of Five' in Algiers which prepared for the Allied landings in North Africa (November 1942), 'inventor' of General Henri Giraud as a candidate for the leadership of liberated North and West Africa, negotiator of the Murphy-Giraud Agreements and the Anfa Memorandum with President Roosevelt (1942 and 1943), political writer on the postwar future of France in Morocco and the owner of the liberal newspaper Maroc-Presse. He was assassinated in Casablanca by French counter-terrorists in June 1955, a 'turning point' event which pushed the French government to grant independence to Morroco. Was he a rabble-rouser, a demagogue, a betrayer of French interests at home and overseas or a reformer, a patriot, a hero of the anti-German resistance, and a champion of Franco-Moroccan solidarity?
Tazmamart : 18 years in Morocco's secret prison
The infamous secret prison Tazmamart, still a powerful symbol of contemporary political oppression, was built in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco in 1972 specifically for political prisoners, following the coup d'etat against King Hassan II the year before. As a young army officer, Aziz Binebine was driven to the king's summer residence, ostensibly for large-scale training exercises. There, officers and cadets were led to believe that the king was in danger, and were ordered to fire on visiting dignitaries and diplomats. Chaos broke out and a bloodbath ensued, though the king escaped assassination. Among the last to arrive, Binebine witnessed the horrific massacre; he did not fire a shot, but was nonetheless imprisoned in Kenitra prison and later transferred to Tazmamart. The conditions there were nightmarish: the underground cells were small concrete cubes, impossible to stand up in and visited by rats and snakes. Prisoners were confined in the dark for 24 hours a day, with no protection from the extreme weather. There was no medical treatment, even though gutters overflowed continuously and the stench was constant; the total absence of hygiene caused dysentery and death. BineBine realised that the only way to survive this ordeal was to forget everything outside his cell and prison: the past, his family and his friends. He came to terms with the situation, managed to keep his mind active, found refuge in God - and ultimately survived. Tazmamart is a testament of Binebine's, and his inmates', imprisonment. It is a detailed account of the practical and mental measures he took in order to survive, and an unfiltered depiction of the agony of prison life. Written with touching simplicity and tremendous tenderness, Tazmamart is a hellish journey through the abyss of despair. This powerful and at times searing tale of human tragedy is set to become a cult classic of survival literature.
Berber Challenge in Algeria: The State of the Question
2001
Even for the non-expert observer of the Maghreb, the Berber parameter has now become an essential element of the political, social, and cultural scene in both Algeria and Morocco. In Algeria, since 1989, a whole series of spectacular actions confirmed the significant adherence of the Kabyle population to the Berber claim. The latest demonstrations across the region by Kabyle youth in June-July 1998, following upon the assassination of Lounes Matoub, remind us that the embers of Berberism are ready to be fanned into flames at any time. In Morocco, the August 29,1994 royal address in favor of the teaching of Berber took place in a quieter landscape, but it truly represents the rise of a Berber aspiration. Albeit admittedly lacking organization and political character, the Moroccan political power machine undoubtedly wanted to anticipate and neutralize it to avoid a possible evolution in \"the Algerian way.\" This paper will be limited to a presentation of an update of the situation of the \"Berber question\" in Algeria, the forces involved, its actors, and the recent and current developments.

[...]these outcast elements are refigured as agents of change who \"represent a new strain in political life that redefined how opposition to the state could be expressed\" (p. 69). [...]the book's discussion of 'Abd al-Hafiz's assassination of Muhammad al-Kattani unveils the brutal struggle between the forces that defended Moroccan autonomy and those who were willing to achieve pragmatic compromises with European imperialistic states to maintain their position in power. While most of the facts about the tumultuous \"years of lead\" are widely known, thanks to prison memoirs and other testimonial literature, A Modern History of Morocco is probably the first history book to have written these events into the history of the nation. [...]the author undertakes the difficult task of canonizing this history, which institutional conditions in Morocco have yet to accommodate.

2003
Two 14-year-old twin Moroccan girls accused of plotting to assassinate King Mohammed VI were yesterday sentenced to prison terms as part of a massive crackdown on Islamists. Morocco's leading human rights group yesterday complained that the mass trials, with some of the accused given only 15 minutes to testify and where acquittals have been rare, have been seriously flawed. \"The trials have not been equitable and fair,\" said Mohammed el-Boukili of the Moroccan Human Rights Association. Abdellatif Merroun, a Moroccan who obtained British nationality after marrying a British woman, last week received a five-year term in Casablanca for alleged collaboration with violent Islamists.

King's Wrath: Morocco Family Tale of 2 Decades
1994
\"The Oufkir case is one where amnesia rather suits the West,\" a European diplomat said. \"There are diplomatic priorities, after all. Morocco is playing a key role in Middle East peace efforts. The country is stable and a bastion against Algerian-style fundamentalism. One must be practical.\" Some Response Seen \"For 15 years,\" Miss Oufkir said, \"we never saw anyone except guards with machine guns.\" \"Three of us would sit in the middle of the cell and the others walk circles around them,\" Miss Oufkir said. \"We walked kilometers that way. We were close to starving, and hunger reduces you to something lower than the ground. It is a vicious state in which no human relation is possible.\"
