around the world in 80 clicks
2005
In Tucson, Arizona, for example, I was directed to a museum devoted to Otis H Chidester, America's longest-serving Boy Scout and inventor of the sleeping bag, while in nearby Phoenix the fifth top pick was the Breck Shampoo Hall of Fame. Is the Japanese Tobacco and Salt Museum, with its special exhibition entitled 'Ashtrays Art, Craft and Humour', really the ninth best thing Tokyo has to offer the visitor? Possibly not; some matters you just have to take on trust. On many occasions my explorations would produce strange yet enlightening facts or statistics 60 per cent of the population of Uzbekistan is under 20, giving the country the highest density of teenagers on the planet (a big opportunity there for an enterprising spot-cream manufacturer); Wausau, Wisconsin, is the ginseng capital of the world; the Dutch are the tallest race in the world (perhaps not coincidentally, they live in the most densely populated country in Europe if you can't expand outwards you must go upwards); while one in nine Germans is a nudist. In fact, in an attempt to get into this spirit of unfettered naturism, when I virtually crossed the border into Germany I immediately began casting off my clothes then, as I started to unbuckle my jeans, the postman walked past the window of my office, so I had a chocolate macaroon instead. Then there's the food. In a restaurant on Imam Khomeini Street in the Iranian city of Tabriz, for example, the bill of fare featured a broth of beans and cow meat that was 'accompanied for eating with spoon and small hammer'. On the steppes of Kazakhstan, meanwhile, I was offered the opportunity to sample local delicacies that apparently included dried horsemeat sausages boiled in a broad vessel, wind-dried hip flesh and horse neck-fat smoked in dew. And in Arizona (where, incidentally, the official state fossil is petrified wood) I stumbled across a motel that boasted, 'All our sweets come with Jacuzzis.' If true, it must be a very large dessert trolley.

11am: Sorry, but you have got breast cancer; 3pm: You're also going to give birth to twins ; WOMAN COURAGE; I must choose - my life or my babies '
by
Hey, Sarah
in
Atkinson, Alex
1996
IN JUST 24 hours Alex Atkinson's life was turned upside down. After trying for a baby for four years, she learned to her joy she was expecting twins. Then she was told she had a cancerous lump in her breast. She faced an agonising decision. Should she save herself or her babies? In the end, a news item came to my aid. Almost 1,000 people had died in a ferry disaster. Suddenly, everything fell into perspective. I would have my babies. Their lives were more important than mine. . I get the lumpectomy result. All the hope I had vanishes. It's true. I've got breast cancer. They give me two choices - my babies' lives or mine.

LETTERS TO MIRROR WOMAN
1996
I've just heard that Bristol Zoo offers a special wedding package. Couples can tie the knot in the gardens, just a stone's throw away from the gorilla enclosure. I do not believe Diana thinks of anyone except herself. She has done her sons no favours by her behaviour with Hewitt and Carling. She has no dignity or scruples. \"Queen of Hearts\" is a title she has given herself - what a sham. The Duchess of Kent and Princess Anne have been comforting the sick and dying for many years and got no recognition.

Cops issue whistles in crime hot spots
2005
Their first project involves handing out blue, plastic, keychain whistles to students and other residents in the University of Arizona area, said Sgt. Ron Zimmerling, who leads the crime prevention effort. \"We're trying to get ahead of this problem in the UA area,\" Zimmerling said. The effort should also help reduce Tucson's high overall crime rate, but the community has to help make the program successful. When a rape is reported, \"we'll be walking through neighborhoods and just knocking on every door,\" handing out whistles and safety tips and answering questions, Zimmerling said.

Dixie Blazes trail to national soccer supremacy
2004
Dixie advanced to the final after finishing 4-0-0 in round-robin play. The Blaze defeated P.E.I. 12-0, Saskatchewan 11-1, Alberta 5- 0 and Nova Scotia 3-0. Two others, Catharine Maroszzeky and Kimberly Dimitroff, weren't even with the team because they started their U.S. university scholarship commitments at Kent State. Bolstered by two call-ups from the Dixie 88s girls under-16 team -- defender Nicolle Mailloux and centre midfielder/striker [Loredana Riverso] -- the Blaze still functioned like a well-oiled machine. For [Joe Moscato] the conquest is a sweet culmination of years of toil and heartbreak. In eight previous seasons with [Dixie], he's made two trips to the girls under-18 nationals, finishing second in 2001 and third last year when the team was known as the Fury. There were four holdovers from last year's squad, centre midfielder Laura Arduini and defenders Allison McKinnon, Jamie Williams and [Alex Atkinson].

Lambton students ready to invade music camp
2001
Sarnia and Lambton County will be well represented at this summer's Interprovincial Music Camp on Lake Manitouwabing next week. Recently, most of the 62 high school musicians heading to the camp from this area gathered for a get-acquainted barbecue at the home of Shelley Heron and Ron George and got a few words of advise from one of their instructors and a couple of camp veterans. Heron, who plays oboe with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and is also an instructor at the camp, advised the students to be prepared for a lot of hard work when they arrived at the camp. However, she added time has been set aside each day to allow the students to go to the lake to swim, sailboard, kayak or play volleyball or basketball.
