The sum of our days
\"Isabel Allende reconstructs the painful reality of her own life in the wake of the tragic death of her daughter, Paula. Narrated with warmth, humor, exceptional candor, and wisdom, this remarkable memoir is as exuberant and full of life as its creator. Allende bares her soul as she shares her thoughts on love, marriage, motherhood, spirituality and religion, infidelity, addiction, and memory--and recounts stories of the wildly eccentric, strong-minded, and eclectic tribe she gathers around her and lovingly embraces as a new kind of family\"--P. Anti-Nazi movement -- Latin America -- History
2015,2016
In this bold study, Edna Aizenberg offers a much-needed corrective to both Latin American literary scholarship and popular assumptions that the whole of Latin America served as a Nazi refuge both during and after World War II. Analyzing the treatment of the Shoah by five leading figures in Argentine, Brazilian, and Chilean writing-Alberto Gerchunoff, Clarice Lispector, Jorge Luis Borges, Gabriela Mistral, and Joao Guimaraes Rosa-Aizenberg illuminates how Latin American intellectuals engaged with the horrific information that reached them regarding the Holocaust, including the sympathy and collaboration of their own governments with the Nazis. Aizenberg emphasizes how-through fiction, journalism, and activism-these five culture-makers opposed and fought fascism. At the same time, her readings of individual texts confront shopworn clichés about Latin American writing and literature, suggesting deeper and richer dimensions to many canonical works. This interdisciplinary book fills critical gaps in both Holocaust and Latin American studies, and will be of great interest to scholars and students in both fields.

Gabriela Mistral and Victoria Ocampo were the two most influential and respected women writers of twentieth-century Latin America. Mistral, a plain, self-educated Chilean woman of the mountains who was a poet, journalist, and educator, became Latin America’s first Nobel Laureate in 1945. Ocampo, a stunning Argentine woman of wealth, wrote hundreds of essays and founded the first-rate literary journal Sur. Though of very different backgrounds, their deep commitment to what they felt was “their” America forged a unique intellectual and emotional bond between them. This collection of the previously unpublished correspondence between Mistral and Ocampo reveals the private side of two very public women. In these letters (as well as in essays that are included in an appendix), we see what Mistral and Ocampo thought about each other and about the intellectual and political atmosphere of their time (including the Spanish Civil War, World War II, and the dictatorships of Latin America) and particularly how they negotiated the complex issues of identity, nationality, and gender within their wide-ranging cultural connections to both the Americas and Europe.
Investigation into the death of Roberto Bolaنno : (warning: contains strong language, scenes of an explicit nature, gratuitous sex and violence, full-frontal nudity, drug use and a smart-ass talking mouse) : a novel
\"This film noir novel begins with the Chilean government wanting to celebrate the life and work of the supposedly deceased Roberto Bolaنno until they get an anonymous tip that he may still be alive and lurking. Afraid that he'll show up and ruin their celebration -- he never agreed with the politics and frowned on the literature being lauded in Chile, in fact, he found acceptance and fame after he moved to Spain -- they ask the local police authorities to make sure he's actually dead.\"-- Provided by publisher.

2001
This is an intimate interview/biography of passionate contemporary Latin American author Allende, who became a novelist when she transformed a letter she had written to her dying 99-year-old grandfather into the manuscript for her first novel, La casa de los espiritus (The House of Spirits). This powerful book led Argentine-born biographer Celia Correas Zapata to invite Allende to speak at the university, a meeting that inspired a friendship between the two women. Here, Correas Zapata captures the life, spirit and literature of Allende through a series of interviews with the author. Correas Zapata also shares information she has gathered from Allende's family and acquaintances in Chile and includes a chronology through 1998, although the biography itself provides information on publications through 2000. There has yet to be a standard biography of Allende, whose life story is still being lived, but this intimate look joins other critical works about her writing and another less contextualized and personal collection of interviews, Conversations with Isabel Allende, to form the basis of knowledge about this important contemporary writer. Recommended for both public and academic libraries.
Personajes transversales de ficcion en la narrativa de Roberto Bolano
2023
The study of cross-cutting characters in Roberto Bolano's narrative is essential when examining the existing critical bibliography on the Chilean author. Many analyses focus on individual characters or specific works, overlooking the cohesive nature of Bolano's fictional universe. This article aims to present a comprehensive history of the interconnected characters in Bolano' s texts, exploring their evolution and the interplay between the plots of his stories and novels. By examining the complete range of recurring characters, the article uncovers multiple cross-cutting character arcs that span across several of Bolano's works. While Bolano's recognition grew after receiving the Romulo Gallegos Prize in 1998, academic interest in his works further intensified with subsequent publications, including monographs, theses and critical studies. Notable contributions include works that extensively analyse various aspects of Bolano's writing but fall short of a comprehensive study of his cross-cutting characters. This article fills that gap by exploring the appearances and transformations of characters such as Arturo Belano and Ulises Lima, examining instances of character rewriting, and delving into the portrayal of characters in different works. By offering a holistic and intertextual understanding of Bolano's narrative, this study contributes to the critical analysis of his literary oeuvre.
