The Socialist Car
Across the Soviet Bloc, from the 1960s until the collapse of communism, the automobile exemplified the tension between the ideological imperatives of political authorities and the aspirations of ordinary citizens. For the latter, the automobile was the ticket to personal freedom and a piece of the imagined consumer paradise of the West. For the authorities, the personal car was a private, mobile space that challenged the most basic assumptions of the collectivity. The \"socialist car\"-and the car culture that built up around it-was the result of an always unstable compromise between official ideology, available resources, and the desires of an increasingly restless citizenry. InThe Socialist Car, eleven scholars from Europe and North America explore in vivid detail the interface between the motorcar and the state socialist countries of Eastern Europe, including the USSR. In addition to the metal, glass, upholstery, and plastic from which the Ladas, Dacias, Trabants, and other still extant but aging models were fabricated, the socialist car embodied East Europeans' longings and compromises, hopes and disappointments. The socialist car represented both aspirations of overcoming the technological gap between the capitalist first and socialist second worlds and dreams of enhancing personal mobility and status. Certain features of automobility-shortages and privileges, waiting lists and lack of readily available credit, the inadequacy of streets and highways-prevailed across the Soviet Bloc. The Cultural Life of the Automobile
From its invention in Europe at the end of the nineteenth century, the automobile crisscrossed the world, completely took over the cities, and became a feature of daily life. Considered basic to the American lifestyle, the car reflected individualism, pragmatism, comfort, and above all modernity. In Latin America, it served as a symbol of distinction, similar to jewelry or fine clothing. In The Cultural Life of the Automobile, Guillermo Giucci focuses on the automobile as an instrument of social change through its “kinetic modernity\" and as an embodiment of the tremendous social impact of technology on cultural life. Material culture—how certain objects generate a wide array of cultural responses—has been the focus of much scholarly discussion in recent years. The automobile wrought major changes and inspired images in language, literature, and popular culture. Focusing primarily on Latin America but also covering the United States, Europe, Asia, and Africa, Giucci examines how the automobile was variously adapted by different cultures and how its use shaped and changed social and economic relationships within them. At the same time, he shows how the “automobilization\" of society became an essential support for the development of modern individualism, and the automobile its clearest material manifestation.

Dalla restrizione delle liberta alle regole sull'abbigliamento e agli abusi della \"polizia morale\", le donne iraniane sono soggette a molteplici pressioni che limitano il loro accesso allo spazio pubblico, soffocano le loro aspirazioni personali e professionali e instillano la paura nella loro vita quotidiana. Il timore delle ripercussioni che la richiesta di diritti fondamentali puo comportare, la costante sorveglianza esercitata dal regime sulle loro vite e la minaccia di misure punitive in caso di non conformita conducono a un senso pervasivo di incertezza sul futuro e a forme di auto-censura che permangono anche quando si e lasciato l'Iran. Dopo una breve disamina contestuale, il contributo guarda alle esperienze di queste donne, mettendo in luce le loro voci e storie. Attraverso una serie di interviste a donne iraniane che negli ultimi anni hanno lasciato l'Iran e al momento risiedono in Europa, si esplorano i timori che plasmano la loro vita, e che sono espressione di fattori piu ampi di ordine socio-politico. From restricted freedoms to enforced dress codes and abuses by the \"morality police\", Iranian women face a multitude of pressures that restrict their access to public space, stifle their personal and professional ambitions and instil fear in their every-day life. The fear of repercussions for seeking basic rights, the constant surveillance over their lives and the threat of punitive measures for non- conformity lead to a pervasive sense of insecurity and uncertainty about the future and to forms of self-censoring that persist even after leaving Iran. After a brief contextual analysis, the article delves into the lived experiences of these women, highlighting their voices and stories. Through a series of interviews of Iranian women, most of whom left their country in the last few years and currently reside in Europe, we explore the fears that shape their reality, thus gaining insight also into the broader sociopolitical issues at play in contemporary Iran.
