2021
A world-recognized expert in the science of vehicle dynamics, Dr. Thomas Gillespie has created an ideal reference book that has been used by engineers for 30 years, ranging from an introduction to the subject at the university level to a common sight on the desks of engineers throughout the world. As with the original printing, Fundamentals of Vehicle Dynamics, Revised Edition, strives to find a middle ground by balancing the need to provide detailed conceptual explanations of the engineering principles involved in the dynamics of ground vehicles with equations and example problems that clearly and concisely demonstrate how to apply such principles. A study of this book will ensure that the reader comes away with a solid foundation and is prepared to discuss the subject in detail. Ideal as much for a first course in vehicle dynamics as it is a professional reference, Fundamentals of Vehicle Dynamics, Revised Edition, maintains the tradition of the original by being easy to read and while receiving updates throughout in the form of modernized graphics and improved readability. Inasmuch as the first edition proved to be so popular, the Revised Edition intends to carry on that tradition for a new generation of engineers.
Intra-industry Trade in the Portugal Automobile Industry: an Empirical Analysis
2025
The objective of this work is to examine the determinants of intra-industrial trade, total (IIT), horizontal (HIIT) and vertical (VIIT), in the automobile industry in Portugal. Thus, the relationship between the intensity of intra-industrial trade in these sectors between Portugal and 14 countries of the European Union (EU-15), the income per capita (LGDPPC), the differences in physical capital endowments (LDEP), the research and development expenditure (LRD) and the relative size of the country (LRCS) should be evaluated in this study. From the annual data, taken between 2003 and 2015, we apply the GMM-Sys estimation method in one step \"one step GMM-Sys\" for our estimations. The results, on the whole, tend to conform to a priori expectations and provide empirical support for some of the propositions suggested by the theory. The results indicate that research and development expenditures have very important influences on the type of horizontal intra-industry trade. Vertical intra-industry trade flows, on the other hand, are determined primarily by the level of per capita income.

Racing Toward Zero

2021
In Racing Toward Zero, the authors explore the issues inherent in developing sustainable transportation. They review the types of propulsion systems and vehicle options, discuss low-carbon fuels and alternative energy sources, and examine the role of regulation in curbing emissions. All technologies have an impact on the environment, from internal combustion engine vehicles to battery electric vehicles, fuel cell electric vehicles, and hybrids-there is no silver bullet. The battery electric vehicle may seem the obvious path to a sustainable, carbon-free transportation future, but it's not the only, nor necessarily the best, path forward. The vast majority of vehicles today use the internal combustion engine (ICE), and this is unlikely to change anytime soon. Improving the ICE and its fuels-entering a new ICE age-must be a main route on the road to zero emissions. How do we go green? The future requires a balanced approach to transportation. It's not a matter of choosing between combustion or electrification; it's combustion and electrification. As the authors say, \"The future is eclectic.\" By harnessing the best qualities of both technologies, we will be in the best position to address our transportation future as quickly as possible.
Modeling and control of engines and drivelines
2014
Control systems have come to play an important role in the performance of modern vehicles with regards to meeting goals on low emissions and low fuel consumption. To achieve these goals, modeling, simulation, and analysis have become standard tools for the development of control systems in the automotive industry.

What Does the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement Portend for the Canadian Automotive Industry?
2017
If ratified, the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement will likely have a significant impact on the global production strategies of automotive firms. The rules of origin and required levels of regional content-value for products to receive preferential tariff treatment under the TPP will significantly influence what, where, and how automotive components are produced both within and outside the TPP region. This article assesses the TPP's potential impact on automotive production in Canada. Although there may well be both winners and losers among Canadian automotive suppliers, the overall impact on automotive production and employment in Canada is likely to be negative.

The Mobility Diaries
2022
With well over 25 years of experience, Sven Beiker is widely regarded as the mobility expert in Silicon Valley specializing in future trends for the automotive and mobility industries including autonomous driving, connectivity, electrification, and shared mobility. In The Mobility Diaries: Connecting the Milestones of Innovation Leading to ACES, he opens up his personal diary regarding his take on 50 years of mobility innovation and history interwoven with his experiences from 1978 to 2018. From the Foreword by Reilly P. Brennan: “Understanding how transportation itself evolved requires a unique prism. The core components of vehicles today have stories and engineering journeys worth their own telling, and that is what is so exciting about the way we can learn about them in this text. Dr. Beiker’s curriculum vitae, from BMW to Stanford University to McKinsey, are a compendium of experiences that created this unique historical and biographical book.” “Sven and I are kindred spirits in the mobility world. His view on the evolution of mobility and technology illustrates why Detroit and Silicon Valley need one another.” Carla Bailo, Former President and CEO, Center for Automotive Research

2025,2024
In an era where climate change dominates global discourse, Felix Leach and Nick Molden dive deep into the complexity of vehicle emissions in their groundbreaking new book. Building on the insights from Felix's previous work, Racing Toward Zero, this new release confronts the bewildering landscape of automotive pollution with a clear, rigorous approach: what one piece of information can best describe the environmental impact of cars? Our digital age bombards us with information, yet meaningful understanding often eludes us, particularly when it comes to climate issues like road vehicle emissions. As simple solutions to such a complex problem remain elusive, Leach and Molden advocate for a sophisticated, yet accessible perspective. They propose a radical simplification of how we consider the environmental impact of cars and explore the multifaceted impacts of various vehicle powertrains, pushing beyond CO2 emissions to address broader environmental and societal concerns. The authors introduce the Molden-Leach Conjecture, a bold, universal solution that evaluates vehicles through a holistic lens. This conjecture offers a comprehensive framework to assess and regulate environmental impact, aiming to simplify complex choices for consumers and policymakers alike. They propose a new paradigm for taxing vehicles as we move away from fossil gasoline and diesel, enabling policymakers to address pollution and underpin tax revenues simultaneously. In a world where climate action is critical yet convoluted, Leach and Molden's book promises clarity and actionable insight. It's not just about finding answers-it's about finding the right ones. Join the journey to demystify automotive emissions and drive meaningful change.\"As a former Secretary of State for the Environment and, later, Industry I welcome this contribution to the most important challenge of our time.\"
