Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology has emerged as a highly promising solution for wireless communication, offering an opportunity to overcome the limitations of traffic capacity in high-speed broadband wireless network access. By utilizing multiple antennas at both the transmitting and receiving ends, the MIMO system enhances the efficiency and performance of wireless communication systems. This manuscript specifies a comprehensive review of MIMO antenna design approaches for fifth generation (5G) and beyond. With an introductory glimpse of cellular generation and the frequency spectrum for 5G, profound key enabling technologies for 5G mobile communication are presented. A detailed analysis of MIMO performance parameters in terms of envelope correlation coefficient (ECC), total active reflection coefficient (TARC), mean effective gain (MEG), and isolation is presented along with the advantages of MIMO technology over conventional SISO systems. MIMO is characterized and the performance is compared based on wideband/ultra-wideband, multiband/reconfigurable, circular polarized wideband/circular polarized ultra-wideband/circular polarized multiband, and reconfigurable categories. The design approaches of MIMO antennas for various 5G bands are discussed. It is subsequently enriched with the detailed studies of wideband (WB)/ultra-wideband (UWB), multiband, and circular polarized MIMO antennas with different design techniques. A good MIMO antenna system should be well decoupled among different ports to enhance its performance, and hence isolation among different ports is a crucial factor in designing high-performance MIMO antennas. A summary of design approaches with improved isolation is presented. The manuscript summarizes the various MIMO antenna design aspects for NR FR-1 (new radio frequency range) and NR FR-2, which will benefit researchers in the field of 5G and forthcoming cellular generations.

Spectrum Sensing (SS) plays an essential role in Cognitive Radio (CR) networks to diagnose the availability of frequency resources. In this paper, we aim to provide an in-depth survey on the most recent advances in SS for CR. We start by explaining the Half-Duplex and Full-Duplex paradigms, while focusing on the operating modes in the Full-Duplex. A thorough discussion of Full-Duplex operation modes from collision and throughput points of view is presented. Then, we discuss the use of learning techniques in enhancing the SS performance considering both local and cooperative sensing scenarios. In addition, recent SS applications for CR-based Internet of Things and Wireless Sensors Networks are presented. Furthermore, we survey the latest achievements in Spectrum Sensing as a Service, where the Internet of Things or the Wireless Sensor Networks may play an essential role in providing the CR network with the SS data. We also discuss the utilisation of CR for the 5th Generation and Beyond and its possible role in frequency allocation. With the advancement of telecommunication technologies, additional features should be ensured by SS such as the ability to explore different available channels and free space for transmission. As such, we highlight important future research axes and challenging points in SS for CR based on the current and emerging techniques in wireless communications.

An overview on integrated localization and communication towards 6G
2022
while the fifth generation (5G) cellular system is being deployed worldwide, researchers have started the investigation of the sixth generation (6G) mobile communication networks. Although the essential requirements and key usage scenarios of 6G are yet to be defined, it is believed that 6G should be able to provide intelligent and ubiquitous wireless connectivity with Terabits per second (Tbps) data rate and sub-millisecond (sub-ms) latency over three-dimensional (3D) network coverage. To achieve such goals, acquiring accurate location information of the mobile terminals is becoming extremely useful, not only for location-based services but also for improving wireless communication performance in various ways such as channel estimation, beam alignment, medium access control, routing, and network optimization. On the other hand, the advancement of communication technologies also brings new opportunities to greatly improve the localization performance, as exemplified by the anticipated centimeter-level localization accuracy in 6G by extremely large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and millimeter wave (mmWave) technologies. In this regard, a unified study on integrated localization and communication (ILAC) is necessary to unlock the full potential of wireless networks for dual purposes. While there are extensive studies on wireless localization or communications separately, the research on ILAC is still in its infancy. Therefore, this article aims to give a tutorial overview on ILAC towards 6G wireless networks. After a holistic survey on wireless localization basics, we present the state-of-the-art results on how wireless localization and communication inter-play with each other in various network layers, together with the main architectures and techniques for localization and communication co-design in current two-dimensional (2D) and future 3D networks with aerial-ground integration. Finally, we outline some promising future research directions for ILAC.

Wireless cellular traffic prediction is a critical issue for researchers and practitioners in the 5G/B5G field. However, it is very challenging since the wireless cellular traffic usually shows high nonlinearities and complex patterns. Most existing wireless cellular traffic prediction methods lack the abilities of modeling the dynamic spatial–temporal correlations of wireless cellular traffic data, thus cannot yield satisfactory prediction results. In order to improve the accuracy of 5G/B5G cellular network traffic prediction, an attention-based multi-component spatiotemporal cross-domain neural network model (att-MCSTCNet) is proposed, which uses Conv-LSTM or Conv-GRU for neighbor data, daily cycle data, and weekly cycle data modeling, and then assigns different weights to the three kinds of feature data through the attention layer, improves their feature extraction ability, and suppresses the feature information that interferes with the prediction time. Finally, the model is combined with timestamp feature embedding, multiple cross-domain data fusion, and jointly with other models to assist the model in traffic prediction. Experimental results show that compared with the existing models, the prediction performance of the proposed model is better. Among them, the RMSE performance of the att-MCSTCNet (Conv-LSTM) model on Sms, Call, and Internet datasets is improved by 13.70 ~ 54.96%, 10.50 ~ 28.15%, and 35.85 ~ 100.23%, respectively, compared with other existing models. The RMSE performance of the att-MCSTCNet (Conv-GRU) model on Sms, Call, and Internet datasets is about 14.56 ~ 55.82%, 12.24 ~ 29.89%, and 38.79 ~ 103.17% higher than other existing models, respectively.

Mobility management is an essential process in mobile networks to ensure a high quality of service (QoS) for mobile user equipment (UE) during their movements. In fifth generation (5G) and beyond (B5G) mobile networks, mobility management becomes more critical due to several key factors, such as the use of Millimeter Wave (mmWave) and Terahertz, a higher number of deployed small cells, massive growth of connected devices, the requirements of a higher data rate, and the necessities for ultra-low latency with high reliability. Therefore, providing robust mobility techniques that enable seamless connections through the UE’s mobility has become critical and challenging. One of the crucial handover (HO) techniques is known as mobility robustness optimization (MRO), which mainly aims to adjust HO control parameters (HCPs) (time-to-trigger (TTT) and handover margin (HOM)). Although this function has been introduced in 4G and developed further in 5G, it must be more efficient with future mobile networks due to several key challenges, as previously illustrated. This paper proposes a Robust Handover Optimization Technique with a Fuzzy Logic Controller (RHOT-FLC). The proposed technique aims to automatically configure HCPs by exploiting the information on Reference Signal Received Power (RSRP), Reference Signal Received Quality (RSRQ), and UE velocity as input parameters for the proposed technique. The technique is validated through various mobility scenarios in B5G networks. Additionally, it is evaluated using a number of major HO performance metrics, such as HO probability (HOP), HO failure (HOF), HO ping-pong (HOPP), HO latency (HOL), and HO interruption time (HIT). The obtained results have also been compared with other competitive algorithms from the literature. The results show that RHOT-FLC has achieved considerably better performance than other techniques. Furthermore, the RHOT-FLC technique obtains up to 95% HOP reduction, 95.8% in HOF, 97% in HOPP, 94.7% in HOL, and 95% in HIT compared to the competitive algorithms. Overall, RHOT-FLC obtained a substantial improvement of up to 95.5% using the considered HO performance metrics.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly being used in a high-computation paradigm enabled with smart applications in the Beyond Fifth Generation (B5G) wireless communication networks. These networks have an avenue for generating a considerable amount of heterogeneous data by the expanding number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices in smart environments. However, storing and processing massive data with limited computational capability and energy availability at local nodes in the IoT network has been a significant difficulty, mainly when deploying Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to extract discriminatory information from the massive amount of data for different tasks. Therefore, Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) has evolved as a promising computing paradigm leveraged with efficient technology to improve the quality of services of edge devices and network performance better than cloud computing networks, addressing challenging problems of latency and computation-intensive offloading in a UAV-assisted framework. This paper provides a comprehensive review of intelligent UAV computing technology to enable 6G networks over smart environments. We highlight the utility of UAV computing and the critical role of Federated Learning (FL) in meeting the challenges related to energy, security, task offloading, and latency of IoT data in smart environments. We present the reader with an insight into UAV computing, advantages, applications, and challenges that can provide helpful guidance for future research.

Enhancing Microservice Security Through Vulnerability-Driven Trust in the Service Mesh Architecture
2025
Cloud-native computing enhances the deployment of microservice architecture (MSA) applications by improving scalability and resilience, particularly in Beyond 5G (B5G) environments such as Sixth-Generation (6G) networks. This is achieved through the ability to replace traditional hardware dependencies with software-defined solutions. While service meshes enable secure communication for deployed MSAs, they struggle to identify vulnerabilities inherent to microservices. The reliance on third-party libraries and modules, essential for MSAs, introduces significant supply chain security risks. Implementing a zero-trust approach for MSAs requires robust mechanisms to continuously verify and monitor the software supply chain of deployed microservices. However, existing service mesh solutions lack runtime trust evaluation capabilities for continuous vulnerability assessment of third-party libraries and modules. This paper introduces a mechanism for continuous runtime trust evaluation of microservices, integrating vulnerability assessments within a service mesh to enhance the deployed MSA application. The proposed approach dynamically assigns trust scores to deployed microservices, rewarding secure practices such as timely vulnerability patching. It also enables the sharing of assessment results, enhancing mitigation strategies across the deployed MSA application. The mechanism is evaluated using the Train Ticket MSA, a complex open-source benchmark MSA application deployed with Docker containers, orchestrated using Kubernetes, and integrated with the Istio service mesh. Results demonstrate that the enhanced service mesh effectively supports dynamic trust evaluation based on the vulnerability posture of deployed microservices, significantly improving MSA security and paving the way for future self-adaptive solutions.

This paper presents an exploration into the capabilities of an adaptive PID controller within the realm of truck platooning operations, situating the inquiry within the context of Cognitive Radio and AI-enhanced 5G and Beyond 5G (B5G) networks. We developed a Deep Learning (DL) model that emulates an adaptive PID controller, taking into account the implications of factors such as communication latency, packet loss, and communication range, alongside considerations of reliability, robustness, and security. Furthermore, we harnessed a Large Language Model (LLM), GPT-3.5-turbo, to deliver instantaneous performance updates to the PID system, thereby elucidating its potential for incorporation into AI-enabled radio and networks. This research unveils crucial insights for augmenting the performance and safety parameters of vehicle platooning systems within B5G networks, concurrently underlining the prospective applications of LLMs within such technologically advanced communication environments.
