Developing lists of alien taxa in the Global South

Lists of alien taxa facilitate the link between evidence and action and are thus essential for integrated governance. However, the recent IPBES IAS Assessment identified significant gaps in the completeness and availability of lists of alien taxa in the Global South. This article, also available in French, Portuguese and Spanish, introduces three joint special issues based on data collected from over 40 countries – 11 articles in African Biodiversity & Conservation addressing issues in Africa, five articles in Bioinvasiones addressing issues in Latin America and the Caribbean, and 12 articles in NeoBiota addressing issues of broader interest or from other regions. The articles: describe lists of alien taxa from different groups, environments and regions, (including countries, islands, and protected areas); compare lists from different countries; present workflows and protocols to address specific issues; and discuss experiences and lessons in the process of creating lists. The importance of applying and adapting approaches and terminologies to local contexts and languages rather than imposing them externally is discussed. However, it is also important that workflows and translation tables are available to ensure data are more accessible and interoperable, e.g. by explicitly linking to relevant taxonomic backbones, using Darwin Core terms, and contributing to the Global Register of Introduced and Invasive Species. Achieving these two aims will help lists be useful to local end-users and facilitate international collaboration, especially South–South initiatives.

In order to increase the willingness to protect biodiversity, the use of narratives is increasingly being called for in biodiversity communication. At the same time, the importance of narration has so far been both overestimated and underestimated. On the basis of a conceptual sharpening, cultural and literary studies can 1. open up a critical perspective on the use of narratives, 2. provide a broad comparative, historical and contextual analysis of the procedures of biodiversity narration and 3. demonstrate the potential of complex cultural forms of narration for the biodiversity discourse. In 2010, the international community, under the auspices of the Convention on Biological Diversity, agreed on 20 biodiversity-related “Aichi Targets” to be achieved within a decade. We provide a comprehensive mid-term assessment of progress toward these global targets using 55 indicator data sets. We projected indicator trends to 2020 using an adaptive statistical framework that incorporated the specific properties of individual time series. On current trajectories, results suggest that despite accelerating policy and management responses to the biodiversity crisis, the impacts of these efforts are unlikely to be reflected in improved trends in the state of biodiversity by 2020. We highlight areas of societal endeavor requiring additional efforts to achieve the Aichi Targets, and provide a baseline against which to assess future progress.

An inconvenient misconception: Climate change is not the principal driver of biodiversity loss

The current perception that climate change is the principal threat to biodiversity is at best premature. Although highly relevant, it detracts focus and effort from the primary threats: habitat destruction and overexploitation. We collated causes of vertebrate extinctions since 1900, threat information for amphibia, birds, and mammals from the IUCN Red List, and scrutinized others’ attempts to compare climate change with commensurate anthropogenic threats. In each analysis, none of the arguments founded on climate change's wide‐ranging effects are as urgent for biodiversity as those for habitat loss and overexploitation. Present conservation efforts must refocus on these issues. Conserving ecosystems by focusing on these major threats not only protects biodiversity but is the only available, economically viable, global strategy to reverse climate change.
