Backpacker Tourism and Economic Development
2013
There has been a phenomenal growth of backpacker tourism from the overland routes to India in the 1960s, to present-day backpacker tourism across the less developed world. As a result there has been significant economic development impacts of backpacker tourism upon local communities especially in areas with the largest concentrations of backpackers (South and South-East Asia particularly Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and India), as well as increasingly in Latin America.
This volume provides a focused review of the economic development impacts of backpacker tourism in developing regions furthering knowledge on how backpacker tourism can play a crucial role in development strategies in these areas. First, it reviews the origins of the backpackers with a detailed examination of their \"hippy\" predecessors on the overland trail, before discussing the emergence of modern backpackers including social and cultural aspects, and how new technologies are changing their experience. It then analyses the powerful economic development impacts of backpackers on local host communities in cities and rural areas with a special focus on coastal destinations. Extensive case study material is used from backpacker destinations across Asia, Latin America and Africa. In doing so the book provides original insights into how backpacker tourism is highly significant for poverty alleviation and effective local development since it has strong linkages to the local economy, and less economic leakage than conventional tourism.
Written by a leading academic in this area, this volume will be of interest to students of Tourism and Development Studies.
Rethinking niche tourism: The example of backpacking
2021
This conceptual paper re-evaluates the concept of niches in tourism markets. As many regions are now attempting to address niche markets in tourism as a development strategy, understanding of the dynamics of niche markets is crucial. Current approaches are often limited to seeing niche markets as simple subsectors of larger consumer markets. We argue for a broader view of market niches as forms of social rituals involving both consumers and producers with a mutual focus of attention. Based on the work of Randall Collins we examine how interaction rituals are produced and maintained, and how these are also reflected in niche markets, such as backpacking. We illustrate the how backpacking produces a mutual focus of attention and boundaries to outsiders, helping to sustain the niche over the longer term. This analysis has implications for producers hoping to tap into niche markets, as they too need to become part of the niche community.

In The Paradise
Notebooks , Richard J. Nevle and Steven
Nightingale take us across the spectacular Sierra Nevada mountain
range on a journey illuminated by incandescent poetry and
fascinating fact.
Over the course of twenty-one pairs of short essays, Nevle and
Nightingale contemplate the natural phenomena found in the Sierra
Nevada. From granite to aspen, to fire, to a rare, endemic species
of butterfly, these essay pairs explore the natural history and
mystical wonder of each element with a balanced and captivating
touch. As they weave in vignettes from their ninety-mile
backpacking trip across the range, Nevle and Nightingale powerfully
reconceive the Sierra Nevada as both earthly matter and
transcendental offering, letting us into a reality in which nature
holds just as much spiritual importance as it does physical.
In a time of rapid environmental degradation, The Paradise
Notebooks offers a way forward-a whole-minded, learned, loving
attention to place that rekindles our joyful relationship with the
living world.

The emergence of e-tourism and flashpacking is a turning point and a wake-up call for the tourism industry as it explores the impacts of the information technology revolution on tourism and lifestyle change. The present study aims to reflect on flashpacking as a new breed of tech-savvy travelers and identify their main motives for investing in such a travel style. To this end, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 21 flashpackers. The findings revealed that “agentic functioning”, which refers to one’s competence and agency to attain the desired goals in life through a set of learnable actions, was the most frequently reported factor. The second prevalent emerging theme was “recreational experiences” with the two subthemes of adventure and recreational activities. The third reported factor was “cultural competence” which is highly connected to how effectively one can interact with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. Mental well-being was the fourth recurring theme which refers to one’s overall psychological health and happiness. The last frequently mentioned theme was “mindfulness” which highlights the role of one’s heightened awareness and presence during travel experiences. The results can serve as a basis for the segmentation of the flashpacking tourism market and the formation of destination positioning strategies by travel agencies, host destinations, and other stakeholders. Given that the present study is exploratory and takes a qualitative approach, it is suggested to exercise caution when interpreting the results. Additionally, future quantitative research can add deeper insight into their motivational level as well as identify their challenges. Further, triangulation can be used to validate the findings.

Building Information models created from laser scanning inputs are becoming increasingly commonplace, but the automation of the modeling and evaluation is still a subject of ongoing research. Current advancements mainly target the data interpretation steps, i.e., the instance and semantic segmentation by developing advanced deep learning models. However, these steps are highly influenced by the characteristics of the laser scanning technologies themselves, which also impact the reconstruction/evaluation potential. In this work, the impact of different data acquisition techniques and technologies on these procedures is studied. More specifically, we quantify the capacity of static, trolley, backpack, and head-worn mapping solutions and their semantic segmentation results such as for BIM modeling and analyses procedures. For the analysis, international standards and specifications are used wherever possible. From the experiments, the suitability of each platform is established, along with the pros and cons of each system. Overall, this work provides a much needed update on point cloud validation that is needed to further fuel BIM automation.
