The Dialectic of Nonsimultaneity in Bahaa Taher's Sunset Oasis
2019
The article aims at reading Bahaa Taher's Wāḥat al-Ghuūb (Sunset Oasis) through Ernst Bloch's notion of the simultaneity of the nonsimultaneous (Gleichzeitigkeit des Ungleichzeitigen), which foregrounds the existence of a multilayered temporality in the now, together with its inherent contradictions. By deploying the hermeneutical capacity of the simultaneity of the nonsimultaneous, the article shows how Taher highlights the condition of a nation in crisis, through its social and cultural strata that are out of sync. The simultaneity of the nonsimultaneous is, therefore, the underlying logic of the content as well as a form of expression. By analyzing the multilayered temporality, the article argues that Bahaa Taher introduces a multivoiced dialectic, that brings all contradictions to consciousness without mastering and controlling them under a grand narrative.

2015
The Almonte General Hospital (AGH) has a new addition to its award-winning team of staff: their new chief of obstetrics and gynecology. Dr. Bahaa Awwad took over as chief of obstetrics and gynecology (Ob/Gyn) in December of 2014, and said he is settling in nicely to his new position. \"I'm very happy to become a part of the team here,\" Dr. Awwad said. \"It's a great hospital, and I think we'll only continue to be better in the future.\" Dr. Awwad has been practicing in his field for more than 30 years. Originally from Cairo, Egypt, he immigrated to Canada in 2011 to give his children, twin boys Jadi and Rabi, a better life. \"Canada is much more relaxed than Cairo,\" he said. \"I wanted my children to grow up somewhere where they would have any opportunity they wished to pursue. Here, they can do that.\" Before coming to Canada permanently, though, Dr. Awwad has traveled frequently for his career. After attending medical school in Egypt to become a general practitioner, he began his career in Saudi Arabia, where he worked for a few years.
