Other causes include an abnormality in the supply of blood to the foetus or a lack of water around the baby in the womb. Prof Dornan said that in the 1960s and 70s labour was commonly induced in women whose babies were not born on the date they were expected. However, that resulted in high numbers of Caesarean sections and doctors now believe that it is healthier for the child to be born naturally.
