Ethno-baroque
In post-1991 Macedonia,Barokfurniture came to represent affluence and success during a period of transition to a new market economy. This furniture marked the beginning of a larger Baroque style that influenced not only interior decorations in people's homes but also architecture and public spaces. By tracing the signifier Baroque, the book examines the reconfiguration of hierarchical relations among (ethnic) groups, genders, and countries in a transnational context. Investigating how Baroque has come to signify larger social processes and transformations in the current rebranding of the country, the book reveals the close link between aesthetics and politics, and how ethno-national conflicts are reflected in visually appealing ornamentation.

The Baroque Religious Architecture of Paredes de Coura, Portugal, and the Transformation of the Territory
This study explores the intricate relationship between Baroque religious architecture and the transformation of the territory in Paredes de Coura, Portugal. Between the second half of the 17th century and the first half of the 19th century, Paredes de Coura, located in northern Portugal, gradually transformed its religious spaces and buildings. Parish communities and private initiatives, driven by a deep religious motivation and favourable conjuncture factors, rebuilt, enlarged, and built dozens of chapels and churches from scratch, mostly in Baroque configuration but with differentiating characteristics. This process gradually gave the rural landscape a unique singularity, i.e., a transformation of significant cultural and historical importance. Numerous artisans constructed these buildings and filled their interior spaces with works of sacred art, mainly carved altars, originating primarily from Paredes de Coura and Alto-Minho municipalities. This systematic study, based on the analysis of contemporary documentation of religious buildings and extensive fieldwork, ensures the thoroughness and reliability of our research and aims to disseminate the data related to this process, presenting an overall reading of religious architecture and seeking to understand the reasons which were at the base of the construction of such a large number of temples in the municipality of Paredes de Coura during this period that changed the territory. This also highlights how Baroque religious architecture was a product of artistic and spiritual ambitions and a powerful agent of territorial reconfiguration, affecting settlement patterns, infrastructure, and social hierarchy. The legacy of these transformations continues to influence the region’s cultural landscape today.
A Transitory Star
Examining Bernini's works from 1665 on, from Paris and Rome, this book demonstrates the wealth of material still to be drawn from close visual and material examination, archival research, and comparative textual analysis.

Rome 1600 : the city and the visual arts under Clement VIII
\"Rome in 1600 was the centre of the artistic world. This book examines the art and architecture of the city around that date, at a time when major innovations especially in painting, were being made, largely due to the presence of Annibale Carracci and Caravaggio. 1600 was a Jubilee year, which offered numerous opportunities for artistic patronage, whether in major projects such as St Peter's, or in lesser schemes such as the restoration of older churches, as part of an growing interest in the early church. New religious orders, such as the Jesuits and Oratorians, also required new forms of decoration for their recently built churches. The book considers the patronage of the pope and his nephew, Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini, as well as major families including the Giustiniani, Mattei and Farnese. Rome was a magnet for artists and architect from all over Europe, who came to study the remains of antiquity and the works of Michelangelo, Raphael and Bramante. The sheer variety of artists working in the city, who came from other parts of Italy, as well as northern Europe, ensured a wide variety of styles, and at times innovative cross-influences. The numerous patrons of the city were spoiled for choice. The book draws on a wide range of contemporary sources and images to reconstruct a snapshot of Rome at this significant time\"-- Provided by publisher.
Visual Communication and Evangelizing Art in the Temple of San Francisco of La Paz (Bolivia)
The temple of San Francisco de La Paz is one of the best examples of the mestizo baroque style in Bolivia. The richness of the interior of the temple contributes to creating a theatrical and symbolic space, intending to evangelize and transmit the new values of the Catholic faith, through its iconographic programme. Our analysis highlights the differentiation of interior space using altarpiece programmes, thus evidencing how interior architecture is used for communication purposes. We conclude that interior space is transformed for evangelizing purposes.
