In an effort to identify a source of inconsistency in high school basketball officiating, this study tested the hypothesis that female high school basketball officials would be more inclined to assess technical fouls against female players than would any other combination of gender of official and gender of player. Fifty nine female officials and 69 male officials within California responded to a questionnaire that described ten behaviors of a player and a coach, and were asked to designate the likelihood that they would assess a technical foul in response to each behavior. Respondents also rated the degree of perceived aggressiveness associated with each behavior. Analyses of variance yielded support for the prediction. In addition, a mediation analysis suggested that the predicted gender effect was, at least partially, a product of gender differences in perceived aggressiveness. It was also found that the gender bias was most pronounced when the source of the behavior was a player rather than a coach and when the behaviors were expressive rather than instrumental. Implications for consistent officiating including the recruitment and training of female officials, and suggestions for further work are offered.
