The Arrival of the Machine: Modernist Art in Europe, 1910—25
1997
Modernist art first began to deal with technology and its ramifications in the period surrounding World War I. Painters' and sculptors' responses to machines were either hopeful or disparaging. The DaDa artists mainly viewed technological advances as a threat to society. Other artists saw the Industrial Revolution as holding a promise of a better future. This clear distinction between the positive and negative aspects of technology is not possible in the 1990s.
