The benefits of behaving badly on occasion: Successful regulation by planned hedonic deviations
This research tests the idea that goal-pursuit that requires extended inhibition of desires, such as weight loss and financial saving, can benefit from including planned hedonic deviations in the goal-striving plan. Two controlled experiments (simulated and real dieting) demonstrate that including planned goal deviations during extended goal striving, compared with following a straight and rigid goal striving process, (1) helps regain self-regulatory resources, (2) helps maintain consumers' motivation to pursue with regulatory tasks, and (3) has a positive impact on affect experienced, which all contribute to facilitate long-term goal-adherence. A third study, conducted with current goal-strivers provides further evidence of the benefits of planned hedonic deviations for goal pursuit across a variety of goals. This reveals that it may be beneficial for long-term goal-success to occasionally be bad, as long it is planned.
Behavioral deviations: healthcare-seeking behavior of chronic disease patients with intention to visit primary health care institutions
Background Although primary health care (PHC) has been proven to be effective in preventing and treating chronic diseases, the visits rate of PHC institutions is still not ideal. Some patients initially express a willingness to visit PHC institutions but end up seeking health services at non-PHC institutions, and the reasons for this behavior remain unclear. Therefore, the objective of this study is to analyze the factors that contribute to behavioral deviations among chronic disease patients who originally intended to visit PHC institutions. Methods Data were collected from a cross-sectional survey among chronic disease patients with original intention to visit PHC institutions in Fuqing City, China. The analysis framework was guided by Andersen’s behavioral model. Logistic regression models were employed to analyze the factors affecting the behavioral deviations among chronic disease patients with a willingness to visit PHC institutions. Results A total of 1,048 individuals were finally included and about 40% of the participants with the original willingness to seek care from PHC institutions finally chose non-PHC institutions in their subsequent visits. The results of logistic regression analyses indicated that at the predisposition factor level, older participants (aOR 60-69  = 0.602, P  < 0.01; aOR 70-75  = 0.475, P  < 0.01) were less likely to have behavioral deviations. At the enabling factor level, compared to those covered by Urban Employee Basic Medical Insurance (UEBMI) and not reimbursed, those covered by Urban–Rural Resident Basic Medical Insurance (URRBMI) (aOR = 0.297, P  < 0.01), and those answering that reimbursement from medical institutions was convenient (aOR = 0.501, P  < 0.01) or very convenient (aOR = 0.358, P  < 0.001) were less likely to have behavioral deviations. At the need factor level, participants who visited PHC institutions due to illness last year (aOR = 0.348, P  < 0.001) and with polypharmacy (aOR = 0.546, P  < 0.01) were less likely to have behavioral deviations compared to those without the visit of PHC institutions and not taking polypharmacy, respectively. Conclusions The deviations between the original willingness of PHC institution visits and subsequent behavior among chronic disease patients were associated with a number of predisposing, enabling, and need factors. Developing the health insurance system, strengthening the technical capacity of PHC institutions, and steadily developing a new concept of orderly healthcare-seeking behavior among chronic disease patients, will help promote their access to PHC institutions as well as improve the effectiveness of the tiered medical system for chronic disease care.
Research on the Reasons for Route Deviation at F‐Shaped Intersections Based on Navigation Operation Data
Driver deviations from planned routes during navigation threaten road safety and reduce traffic efficiency, with F‐shaped intersections emerging as a high‐risk scenario. This study investigates deviation causes using real‐world navigation operation data and hourly aggregated observations. A generalized structural equation model (SEM) with a zero‐inflated negative binomial link is applied to disentangle direct effects of external conditions and indirect effects mediated by traffic flow and congestion. Key findings include the following: exit/entrance roads ( β = 0.135, p < 0.001) and road type ( β = 0.100, p < 0.001) exert the strongest direct effects on deviations, while traffic congestion mediates 12% of the indirect effect of weather conditions on deviations. An actionable design takeaway is that extending advance signage on high‐risk segments reduces deviations by 18% [−14%, −22%] at median traffic flow, providing targeted technical support for F‐shaped intersection optimization to improve road safety and traffic efficiency.
Gap between Willingness and Behaviors: Understanding the Consistency of Farmers’ Green Production in Hainan, China
The green transformation of production modes plays an essential role in the sustainable development of China’s agriculture and the modernization process, but there is often a deviation between farmers’ behavior and their willingness regarding green production. This paper analyzed the factors influencing the deviation of farmers’ green production behaviors from their willingness, along with their hierarchical logic structure, using the ordered logit model and ISM model with field survey data of 436 households in Hainan Province. The results show that: (1) there are deviations between farmers’ green production behavior and willingness; (2) age, number of dependents, peer influence, and social networks aggravate farmers’ green production behavior–willingness deviation, while ethnicity, education, land fragmentation, agricultural expenditure, land transfer, neighborhood learning, and green production cognition mitigate the deviation; (3) among the significant influencing factors, farmers’ perceptions of green production, peer influence, land transfer, and agricultural expenditure are the direct surface factors, while neighborhood learning, land fragmentation, and number of dependents are the middle indirect factors, and farmers’ education, social networks, age, and ethnicity are the deep-rooted factors. This study sheds more light and detail on the understanding of the factors influencing farmers’ green production behavior–willingness deviation, and provides more practical and relevant guidance for the agricultural green development in tropical China.
Using the eServices Platform for Detecting Behavior Patterns Deviation in the Elderly Assisted Living: A Case Study
World’s aging population is rising and the elderly are increasingly isolated socially and geographically. As a consequence, in many situations, they need assistance that is not granted in time. In this paper, we present a solution that follows the CRISP-DM methodology to detect the elderly’s behavior pattern deviations that may indicate possible risk situations. To obtain these patterns, many variables are aggregated to ensure the alert system reliability and minimize eventual false positive alert situations. These variables comprehend information provided by body area network (BAN), by environment sensors, and also by the elderly’s interaction in a service provider platform, called eServices—Elderly Support Service Platform. eServices is a scalable platform aggregating a service ecosystem developed specially for elderly people. This pattern recognition will further activate the adequate response. With the system evolution, it will learn to predict potential danger situations for a specified user, acting preventively and ensuring the elderly’s safety and well-being. As the eServices platform is still in development, synthetic data, based on real data sample and empiric knowledge, is being used to populate the initial dataset. The presented work is a proof of concept of knowledge extraction using the eServices platform information. Regardless of not using real data, this work proves to be an asset, achieving a good performance in preventing alert situations.
Domestic Waste Classification Behavior and Its Deviation from Willingness: Evidence from a Random Household Survey in Beijing
To realize widespread domestic waste classification (DWC), deviation between residents’ waste classification willingness (WCW) and waste classification behavior (WCB) needs to be reduced. Based on an extended framework of the theory of planned behavior, this study investigates residents’ WCW, WCB and their deviation through a random face-to-face survey of 632 households in Beijing. By employing the ordered logit model, determinants have been empirically revealed. We find that there is a deviation between WCW and WCB. 54.3% of respondents reported a higher degree of WCW than that of WCB. The deviation is determined by specific external conditions, including attitudes and norms associated with other subjects that are not authoritative regulators, and the implementation of various policy instruments for DWC. The higher the satisfaction with the services of property enterprises, the higher the deviation is. The positive WCB of peers in communities failed to create positive subjective norms, but instead exacerbated free-rider phenomenon by inducing their negative WCB. Flat-rate charge, publicity measures and the effectiveness of DWC within community can significantly reduce the deviation. On this basis, policy suggestions are put forward to further reduce the deviation and improve the rate of DWC.
A Study of the Pressure Effect on the Relative Volatility of the Components in the Distillation Process of Mixtures of Different Natures
The pressure effect on the relative volatility of binary mixtures of different natures and ternary mixtures containing potential separating agents such as dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and butyl propionate is studied. A wide range of information is obtained based on the data on the vapor–liquid equilibrium, and effects of the pressure on the relative volatility of various nature and cause for a fixed composition of the initial mixture are determined. In the presence of intersection points of the phase-equilibrium curves in the initial binary mixture and pseudobinary mixture (in the section with a constant concentration of the third high-boiling component), the concentration simplex is divided into regions in which the values of the relative volatility decrease (increase) upon varying pressure. This fact makes it possible to improve the procedure of separation process optimization at the stage of operating pressure selection in the columns.
Adolescent Vandalism: the Role of the Parent-Child Relationship in the Development of Destructive Behavior
Background. While the phenomena of intentional destroying and damaging of private property have been known since ancient times, the term “vandalism” appears only in 19th century. In the 20th century, much research devoted to vandalism was conducted in the spheres of criminology, sociology, psychology, and education. Nevertheless, little attention has been paid to investigating the correlation between a child’s propensity for vandalism and the child-parent relationship. Objective and Method. The main purpose of our research was to investigate the correlation between the styles of family upbringing and adolescents’ propensity for vandalism. For this purpose, we analyzed the main predictors of adolescents’ propensity for vandalism on the basis of the psychological diagnostics of 60 Russian families from Ekaterinburg. We investigated whether the fact that a child was brought up in a one-parent or disadvantaged family is significant for forming an adolescent propensity for vandalism. We also clarified the influence of various styles of family upbringing on an adolescent’s propensity for vandalism of different types. Results. Based on statistical analysis, we concluded that an atmosphere of violence within the family plays a key role in forming adolescents’ propensity for vandalism. The style of maternal upbringing has a greater influence on determining adolescent destructive behavior than the paternal, especially when the father’s parenting style is “non-interference.” Conclusion. Based on our research results, we suggest that preventive the efforts against vandalism should be directed toward the prevention of family violence, and that there should be a differential approach toward parental education directed toward correcting individual parental styles of upbringing.
Ion-Exchange Interaction of Glass-Forming Silicate Melts with Mixed Chloride Melts
The ion-exchange interaction of the sodium aluminosilicate and sodium galliumsilicate melts with a mixture of molten Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, and Ba chlorides is studied. It is established that two alkaline silicate melts are characterized by negative deviations from the ideal behavior, and silicate melts containing alkaline and alkaline-earth cations are characterized by noticeable positive deviations from the ideal behavior.
