Burns Supper The Bard's Portrait, given to Kippen Burns Club in 1896, again graced the village hall platform last Friday evening as Sir Michael Hurst welcomed a large company to the biennial event organised by Friends of Kippen Kirk. Heralded by piper Douglas Graham, Gordon McEachern was haggis bearer and it was duly addressed by Murray O'Donnell. Grace was said by Joanna McPhail before Cameron Skinner served a traditional supper. A short interval preceded The Immortal Memory, from Donnie Graham, Milngavie. Burns songs were enjoyed from Joyce Begg, Killearn, and John Oswald, Kippen, and Tam O'Shanter was well said by Murray O'Donnell. A Toast to the Lassies was voiced by John McKenzie, Buchlyvie, and there was much laughter from the splendid reply in rhyme from Helen Wilson, Kippen. The whole company, led by pianist Kathleen McKellar Ferguson and Iain Dickson's words on screen, enjoyed community singing before Tom Connolly's courtesy remarks and a rousing Auld Lang Syne ended the evening.

Titans are trying to heal, prepare Series: AFC NOTEBOOK

Bell, Jacob
2004
[Jacob Bell] played 14 snaps with the line Saturday in the Titans' 17-7 victory over Miami, a game moved up a day because of approaching Hurricane Ivan. But Bell couldn't face a bigger challenge with the Titans hosting the defending AFC South champion Colts Sunday. The biggest question for the Titans on offense will be the health of receiver Tyrone Calico's knees. He sprained ligaments in both in the final preseason game, and had torn cartilage repaired in his left knee on Sept. 1. The Titans predicted he could be out two or three weeks, and he didn't travel to Miami. But he jogged on a treadmill Sunday, and Calico said Monday he felt fine.

THANKFUL FOR GIFT OF TIME ; A community volunteer effort helps make a new home for the family of an ailing 2-year-old
ABOUT RHABDOMYOSARCOMA Rhabdomyosarcoma is a fast-growing, highly malignant tumor. It accounts for 5 percent to 8 percent of childhood cancers. Seventy percent of all rhabdomyosarcoma cases are diagnosed in the first 10 years of life. The peak incidence is in the 1-5 age group. Rhabdomyosarcoma is treated by a combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Source: Pediatric Oncology Resource Center, www.acor.org/ped-onc. In March, Jacob was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, which most often occurs in the head and neck of boys. Extensive, physically draining radiation and chemotherapy during the summer and fall destroyed five tumors in his body, and the Bells thought their son had weathered the storm. Another round of treatment may be possible if Jacob gains enough strength. \"We're leaving it up to Jacob and how he feels,\" Carla Bell said, cradling her son.
