Partners in vines
SOME time during 2000, Nick Walker got a telephone call from his good mate, David O'Leary. Walker and O'Leary were two of the star winemakers at Mildara Blass (predecessor to Beringer Blass). O'Leary has worked for Petaluma and Reynella (before and after the Hardy's takeover), moving to Mildara, then overseas to Chile and the United States and back home to Coonawarra. Walker comes from a long line of Australian winemakers, worked with Grant Burge at Krondorf, staying after Mildara's takeover (becoming Beringer Blass) to work on Yellowglen and then Yarra Ridge. Although they have only had a few vintages together, the quality and value of the wines has made a huge impression. As well as their own plantings, fruit is sourced from the O'Leary family vineyards in the Adelaide Hills, one of the oldest there, and from a number of contracted growers. Like their neighbour in the Clare, Jeffrey Grosset, O'Leary Walker produce both a Polish Hill and a Watervale Riesling. The new- release 2004 wines, a vintage O'Leary regards as the equal of 2002, are terrific wines.
