Sugar-Sweetened Beverages and Artificially Sweetened Beverages Consumption and the Risk of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver (NAFLD) and Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH)
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) are fast becoming the most common chronic liver disease and are often preventable with healthy dietary habits and weight management. Sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption is associated with obesity and NAFLD. However, the impact of different types of SSBs, including artificially sweetened beverages (ASBs), is not clear after controlling for total sugar intake and total caloric intake. The aim of this study was to examine the association between the consumption of different SSBs and the risk of NAFLD and NASH in US adults. The representativeness of 3739 US adults aged ≥20 years old who had completed 24 h dietary recall interviews and measurements, including dietary, SSBs, smoking, physical activity, and liver stiffness measurements, were selected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2017–2020 surveys. Chi-square tests, t-tests, and weighted logistic regression models were utilized for analyses. The prevalence of NASH was 20.5%, and that of NAFLD (defined without NASH) was 32.7% of US. adults. We observed a higher prevalence of NASH/NAFLD in men, Mexican-Americans, individuals with sugar intake from SSBs, light–moderate alcohol use, lower physical activity levels, higher energy intake, obesity, and medical comorbidities. Heavy sugar consumption through SSBs was significantly associated with NAFLD (aOR = 1.60, 95% CI = 1.05–2.45). In addition, the intake of ASBs only (compared to the non-SSB category) was significantly associated with NAFLD (aOR = 1.78, 95% CI = 1.04–3.05), after adjusting for demographic, risk behaviors, and body mass index. A higher sugar intake from SSBs and exclusive ASB intake are both associated with the risk of NAFLD.
Production, Consumption, and Potential Public Health Impact of Low- and No-Alcohol Products: Results of a Scoping Review
Switching from higher strength to low- and no-alcohol products could result in consumers buying and drinking fewer grams of ethanol. We undertook a scoping review with systematic searches of English language publications between 1 January 2010 and 17 January 2021 using PubMed and Web of Science, covering production, consumption, and policy drivers related to low- and no-alcohol products. Seventy publications were included in our review. We found no publications comparing a life cycle assessment of health and environmental impacts between alcohol-free and regular-strength products. Three publications of low- and no-alcohol beers found only limited penetration of sales compared with higher strength beers. Two publications from only one jurisdiction (Great Britain) suggested that sales of no- and low-alcohol beers replaced rather than added to sales of higher strength beers. Eight publications indicated that taste, prior experiences, brand, health and wellbeing issues, price differentials, and overall decreases in the social stigma associated with drinking alcohol-free beverages were drivers of the purchase and consumption of low- and no-alcohol beers and wines. Three papers indicated confusion amongst consumers with respect to the labelling of low- and no-alcohol products. One paper indicated that the introduction of a minimum unit price in both Scotland and Wales favoured shifts in purchases from higher- to lower-strength beers. The evidence base for the potential beneficial health impact of low- and no-alcohol products is very limited and needs considerable expansion. At present, the evidence base could be considered inadequate to inform policy.
Chemometric Analysis and Human Health Implications of Trace and Heavy/Non-Essential Metals through ingestion of Carbonated and Non-Carbonated Beverages
Elevated levels of trace metals (TMs) and heavy/non-essential metals (HnMs) in commonly consumed beverages concern the public and regulatory agencies. Thus, frequent monitoring of these metals is critically important. The present study intended to assess TMs and HnMs concentrations and associated health risks in beverages. Ten metals, such as Mn, Co, Cr, Cu, and Zn (TMs) and Ni, Cd, Pb, Al, and As (HnMs), were quantified in different beverage brands categorized into two groups such as non-carbonated and carbonated beverages. Chemometric analysis such as hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), Pearson’s correlation coefficient (PCC), and principal component analysis (PCA) were also performed to demonstrate the possible natural and anthropogenic sources of metal contamination. Among the TMs, the mean concentration of Zn (233.3 ± 3.3–291.7 ± 3.2 µg/L) followed by Mn (119.0 ± 2.3–146.4 ± 2.2 µg/L) was found highest in both carbonated and non-carbonated beverage samples. In the case of HnMs, the lowest mean concentration of Cd (7.4 ± 0.9–18.6 ± 1.2 µg/L) followed by Pb (4.1 ± 0.4–4.5 ± 0.4 µg/L) was observed in both types of beverage samples. The tolerable dietary intake (TDI) value for Ni and provisional tolerable monthly intake (PTMI) value for Cd were higher than the value established by the WHO and EFSA. The computed values of the hazard index (HI < 1) and the cumulative cancer risk (CCR) indicated a low risk of exposure.
The Relationship Between Artificial Sweetener Intake from Soft Drinks and Internet Addiction Among Students: An Analytical and Cross-Sectional Study
The increasing consumption of artificially sweetened beverages among young people, coupled with prevalent digital technology use, presents growing public health concerns regarding potential effects on health and behavior. This study aimed to determine the concentrations of three commonly used artificial sweeteners—acesulfame K, saccharin, and aspartame—in soft drinks available on the market in Osijek, Croatia, to assess their compliance with European Union regulations, and to investigate the consumption patterns and possible associations with internet addiction among university students. Laboratory analysis of 43 beverages was performed using high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection, while a cross-sectional survey of 792 students collected data on sociodemographic characteristics, beverage consumption, and internet use. Acesulfame K was the most frequently detected sweetener, followed by aspartame and saccharin, with mean concentrations of 50.1 mg/L, 22.7 mg/L, and 19.76 mg/L, respectively. Overall, 85.7% of the students stated that they consumed artificially sweetened drinks, with an average consumption of 0.2 L/day. Internet addiction was found in 39.8% of the participants, but no significant correlation was found between beverage consumption and internet addiction (p = 0.177). All measured concentrations of sweeteners were below the legal limits. These results suggest that while exposure to artificial sweeteners in beverages is within safe limits, further research is needed to assess cumulative intake and its potential impact on behavioral health in young adults.
Consumption Patterns of Sugar-Sweetened Beverages and Association with Undernutrition among Children Aged 9–17 Years in Guangzhou, China: A Cross-Sectional Study
Globally, the high consumption levels of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) and their effect on health have drawn significant attention. This study aimed to identify the consumption patterns of SSBs among children in rural areas of Guangzhou, China, and explore their association with undernutrition. A total of 1864 children aged 9–17 years old were included in this study. Demographics, lifestyle behaviors, and anthropometric and dietary information were collected. Factor analysis was used to identify patterns of SSBs, while nutritional status was assessed using Body Mass Index (BMI). Latent class analysis was used to establish dietary preference models. Log-binomial regression analysis was used to analyze the association between SSBs consumption patterns and undernutrition. The undernutrition prevalence in children was 14.54–19.94% in boys and 9.07% in girls. Three SSB consumption patterns were identified, including the plant protein pattern, dairy-containing pattern, and coffee pattern. Both medium-high (Q3) and the highest (Q4) scores in the dairy-containing pattern were positively associated with the risk of undernutrition, especially in boys. Furthermore, the highest scores in the plant protein pattern and coffee pattern were positively associated with the risk of undernutrition in children aged 9–10 years old. The dairy-containing pattern was a risk factor for undernutrition in children, especially for boys; the plant protein patterns and coffee patterns were risk factors for undernutrition in children aged 9–10 years old. The findings of the study can provide scientific evidence and policy recommendations for improving children’s health conditions.
Associations Between Added Sugars Intake from Various Food and Beverage Sources and Diet Quality Among the U.S. Population
Background: A diet high in added sugars has been linked to poor diet quality; however, little is known about specific sources of added sugars and their association with diet quality. Objective: This study examined associations between added sugars intake from specific food and beverage sources and diet quality, as indicated by the Healthy Eating Index (HEI) 2020 score, among the U.S. population. Methods: Data from eight consecutive 2-year cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2003–2004 through 2017–2018) were pooled, and regression analysis was conducted to examine associations between total HEI-2020 score or HEI-2020 component scores and added sugars intake (% kcal) from key contributors: soft drinks, fruit drinks and coffee and tea; ready-to-eat cereals; flavored milk; sweet bakery products; and snack/meal bars. Results: A higher added sugars intake from soft drinks, fruit drinks and coffee and tea was associated with lower diet quality (lower total HEI score and lower scores on most of the HEI components) among both children and adults (p < 0.0001). In contrast, higher added sugars intakes from flavored milk (p < 0.0001) and snack/meals bars (p < 0.001) among children, and from sweet bakery products (p < 0.0001) among adults, were associated with higher diet quality. For all these associations, changes in the total HEI score across quintiles of added sugars intake were very small, ranging from 50.2 to 52.8 for children and 55.4 to 57.5 for adults, depending on the added sugars source. Conclusions: The nature of the relationship between added sugars intake and diet quality depends on the source of added sugars. While the small differences in diet quality may be of limited practical significance, our results suggest that the consideration of the different roles of various added sugars sources in the diet is warranted when developing dietary guidance.
Total, added and free sugar intakes, dietary sources and determinants of consumption in Portugal: The National Food, Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey (IAN-AF 2015-2016)
Objective:To assess total sugar (TS), added sugar (AS) and free sugar (FS) intakes, dietary sources, adherence to recommendations and determinants of consumption, in a Portuguese national sample.Design:Cross-sectional study. Dietary assessment was obtained by two food diaries in children aged <10 years and two non-consecutive 24 h recalls for other age groups. TS, AS and FS intakes were estimated by using SPADE software. TS content in food was estimated at the ingredient level. AS content in food was assessed through a systematic methodology and FS was based on the WHO definition.Setting:National Food, Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey (IAN-AF 2015-2016), Portugal.Participants:Representative sample from the Portuguese population, aged from 3 months to 84 years (n 5811).Results:Mean daily intake and contribution to total energy intake (E%) were 84·3 g/d (18·5 E%) for TS, 32·1 g/d (6·8 E%) for AS and 35·3 g/d (7·5 E%) for FS. Of the population, 76 % adhered to the FS recommendation (FS < 10 E%). The lowest adherence was in children (51·6 %) and adolescents (51·3 %). The main dietary source of TS was fruit across all ages, except in adolescents which was soft drinks. In children, the main dietary sources of FS were yoghurts and sweets, soft drinks in adolescents and table sugar in adults/elderly. FS intake was lower in children with more educated parents and in adults who practised physical activity regularly, and higher among smokers.Conclusions:Interventions ought to be planned towards decreasing intakes of added and free sugars considering population-specific characteristics. Non-Destructive and Non-Invasive Measurement of Ethanol and Toxic Alcohol Strengths in Beverages and Spirits Using Portable Raman Spectroscopy
The measurement of ethanol and toxic alcohol (methanol and isopropanol) strengths in beverages and spirits is crucial for health reasons but also for the identification of adulterated products. Many methodologies have been reported in the literature, based mainly on chromatographic and on spectroscopic techniques. Chromatographic techniques are laborious and time-consuming, while spectroscopic techniques are rapid and need no special sample pretreatment. All techniques were only applied to off-line or at-line manner. In the present work, Raman spectroscopy was used for fast and non-destructive measurements. A “through the container” method was developed for a non-invasive analysis, i.e., analysis without unsealing the bottles. This method, coupled with a miniature portable Raman, can serve for in-line measurements in a production line. The optimum laser focus for maximum spirit signal and minimum glass-wall signal was investigated. Calibration curves for the alcohols of interest were constructed and validated. The limits of detections were calculated and proved to be lower than the legitimate values. The influences of the liquor color and the bottle color, shape, and thickness were checked. Twenty-eight alcoholic products were studied. The concentrations found were compared against the nominal values (from the bottle labels).
A simple, fast and easy methodology for the monitoring of plastic migrants in alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages using the QuEChERS method prior to gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry
In this work, the development of a simple, fast and reliable method for the evaluation of a group of twelve plastic migrants in alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages widely consumed by the population has been carried out. For that, a modified QuEChERS method for the extraction and preconcentration of the target compounds has been used prior to their separation and quantification by gas chromatography coupled to triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry. The whole methodology was validated for beer, cider and grape juice matrices, using dibutyl phthalate-3,4,5,6-d4 as surrogate. Recovery ranged from 75 to 120% for all matrices with relative standard deviation values lower than 20%, and the limits of quantification of the method were achieved in the range 0.034–1.415 μg/L. Finally, the analysis of different beer, cider and grape juice samples commercialised in different supermarkets of Tenerife was carried out, finding the presence of four of the evaluated phthalates in the range 0.14–1.1 μg/L in some of the evaluated beers, six of them in several cider samples, in the range 0.3–2.1 μg/L, and one in the range 1.2–1.5 μg/L in three of the analysed grape juices.
The nutritional content of supermarket beverages: a cross-sectional analysis of New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the UK
To compare the nutritional content, serving size and taxation potential of supermarket beverages from four different Western countries. Cross-sectional analysis. Multivariate regression analysis and χ 2 comparisons were used to detect differences between countries. Supermarkets in New Zealand (NZ), Australia, Canada and the UK. Supermarket beverages in the following categories: fruit juices, fruit-based drinks, carbonated soda, waters and sports/energy drinks. A total of 4157 products were analysed, including 749 from NZ, 1738 from Australia, 740 from Canada and 930 from the UK. NZ had the highest percentage of beverages with sugar added to them (52 %), while the UK had the lowest (39 %, P<0.001). There is substantial difference between countries in the mean energy, serving size and proportion of products eligible for fiscal sugar taxation. Current self-regulatory approaches used in these countries may not be effective to reduce the availability, marketing and consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and subsequent intake of free sugars.
