Monitoring of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from an oil and gas station in northwest China for 1 year

Oil and natural gas are important for energy supply around the world. The exploring, drilling, transportation and processing in oil and gas regions can release a lot of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). To understand the VOC levels, compositions and sources in such regions, an oil and gas station in northwest China was chosen as the research site and 57 VOCs designated as the photochemical precursors were continuously measured for an entire year (September 2014–August 2015) using an online monitoring system. The average concentration of total VOCs was 297 ± 372 ppbv and the main contributor was alkanes, accounting for 87.5 % of the total VOCs. According to the propylene-equivalent concentration and maximum incremental reactivity methods, alkanes were identified as the most important VOC groups for the ozone formation potential. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis showed that the annual average contributions from natural gas, fuel evaporation, combustion sources, oil refining processes and asphalt (anthropogenic and natural sources) to the total VOCs were 62.6 ± 3.04, 21.5 ± .99, 10.9 ± 1.57, 3.8 ± 0.50 and 1.3 ± 0.69 %, respectively. The five identified VOC sources exhibited various diurnal patterns due to their different emission patterns and the impact of meteorological parameters. Potential source contribution function (PSCF) and concentration-weighted trajectory (CWT) models based on backward trajectory analysis indicated that the five identified sources had similar geographic origins. Raster analysis based on CWT analysis indicated that the local emissions contributed 48.4–74.6 % to the total VOCs. Based on the high-resolution observation data, this study clearly described and analyzed the temporal variation in VOC emission characteristics at a typical oil and gas field, which exhibited different VOC levels, compositions and origins compared with those in urban and industrial areas.

Increasing the Adhesion of Bitumen to the Surface of Mineral Fillers through Modification with a Recycled Polymer and Surfactant Obtained from Oil Refining Waste

The purpose of this study was to optimize the processes of wetting fillers by varying the content of such additives as a surfactant and polymer in bitumen–mineral compositions in order to achieve optimal performance. The cosine of the contact angle was used as a criterion for assessing the adhesion of the bitumen binder to the surface of crushed stone. The effect of the additives’ concentration on surface tension and adhesive efficiency in binary and ternary bitumen compositions was studied. The following chemicals were used as additives: the original product AS-1, industrial additive AMDOR-10, and used sealant AG-4I, a product based on polyisobutylene and petroleum oils. AS-1 was obtained from the oil refining waste in the laboratory of M. Kozybayev North Kazakhstan University. The ternary “bitumen–AG-4I–AS-1” composition provided a maximum decrease in the contact angle by 15.96° (gray crushed stone) and by 14.06° (red crushed stone) relative to original bitumen, providing better wettability of the mineral filler particles with the bitumen, and as a result, maximum adhesion between the bitumen and crushed stone. The optimal performance of the bitumen–mineral composition was recorded with the joint presence of additives in the bitumen: AS-1 at a level of 1.0 g/dm3 and AG-4I at a level of 1.0 g/dm3.

Study of Adhesion–Cohesive Interactions of Modified Bitumen Compositions

The aim of the work was to study the effect of additive concentration on changes in the adhesive and cohesive strength of bitumen. To evaluate the effectiveness of modifiers in the composition of binary and triple bitumen systems in relation to mineral fillers of two grades, the method of determination of the adhesive efficiency and thermodynamic calculations of adhesion and cohesion work were used. The following compounds were used as additives: AS-2 synthesized from the oil refining waste and AG-4I (waste sealing liquid). Adhesion–cohesion processes in modified bitumen systems are limited by the wetting effect of crushed stone and the intensity of intermolecular forces in the condensed phase of the binder. In the binary compositions, the addition of modifiers into bitumen significantly improves the cohesive strength and adhesive efficiency in relation to crushed stone. The introduction of AS-2 into bitumen compositions with AG-4I increases adhesion efficiency and thermodynamic work of adhesion in relation to the filler surface. The adhesion efficiency and thermodynamic work of adhesion in the “bitumen-AG-4I-AS-2” system reach their maximum at CAG-4I = 3.0 g/dm3 and CAS-2 = 1.5 g/dm3. In these concentration modes, the composition ensures maximum increase in adhesion efficiency (AKS = 65.18%; AKA = 48.11%) and the greatest increase in thermodynamic work of adhesion (WA(KS) = 15.79 mN/m; WA(KA) = 14.13 mN/m).

Modeling of Oil Bitumen Quality Parameters Using Machine Learning Algorithms

The paper considers approaches, principles, and results of modeling the quality parameters of petroleum bitumen using machine learning algorithms based on recurrent neural networks. It is shown that machine learning algorithms can be effectively used in practice for oil refining processes. Various problems involved in data processing, as well as selection of variables and suitable neural network architecture for solving a particular problem, are considered. Further research directions are outlined.

Is It Worth It? Potential for Reducing the Environmental Impact of Bitumen Roofing Membrane Production

Between 51% and 72% of a bituminous roofing membrane used for structural waterproofing consists of organic material, predominantly bitumen—a derivative of crude oil refining—highlighting the strong dependence of this product on fossil resources. Considering that several tonnes of these membranes must be replaced every 30 to 50 years, substantial potential exists for emission reduction through the establishment of circular material systems. This study investigates this potential by analysing 26 Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and life cycle datasets from across Europe covering the period from 2007 to 2023. To ensure comparability, all data were normalised to a declared unit of 1 kg of roofing membrane. The reinforcement layers were categorised into glass and polyester & glass composites, and their differences were examined using Welch’s t-tests. Correlative analyses and linear as well as multiple regression models were then applied to explore relationships between environmental indicators and the shares of organic and mineral mass fractions. The findings reveal that renewable energy sources, although currently representing only a small share of total production energy, provide a major lever for reducing nearly all environmental impact categories. The type of reinforcement layer was also found to influence the demand for fossil resources, both materially and energetically. For most environmental indicators, only multiple regression models can explain at least 30% of the variance based on the proportions of organic and mineral inputs. Overall, the study underscores the crucial importance of high-quality, transparently documented product data for accurately assessing the sustainability of building products. It further demonstrates that substituting fossil energy carriers with renewable sources and optimising material efficiency can substantially reduce environmental burdens, provided that methodological consistency and clarity of indicator definitions are maintained.

Recycling agents provide better additions of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) in the production of new asphalt mixtures. Alternative and residual materials that have the potential as asphalt binder viscosity reducers have gained visibility in the field of paving due to the perspective of circular economy in recycled mixtures. Soybean oil sludge fatty acid is a material produced from soybean oil sludge, a waste generated in the soybean oil refining step. Thus, this paper investigated the physical, chemical, and rheological effects of the asphalt binder PG 64-XX modified by the fatty acid of soybean oil sludge in the contents of 6% and 7% by weight of the binder. The modified binder samples were submitted to penetration tests, softening point, rotational viscosity, performance grade (PG), before and after short-term aging (RTFO), and multiple stress creep and recovery (MSCR). A control asphalt mixture and recycled asphalt mixtures produced with 40% RAP and fatty acid-modified binders were subjected to tensile strength, induced moisture damage, resilient modulus, and fatigue life. statistical test verified the significance of the data, as well as the estimation of production costs of these asphalt mixtures. The use of the fatty acid significantly reduced the stiffness and viscosity of the control asphalt binder, decreasing the mixing temperatures at 14 °C and 17 °C to 6% and 7%, respectively. Using higher fatty acid contents from soybean oil sludge significantly improved the performance of recycled mixtures in tensile strength, moisture damage, and fatigue life. The production cost of recycled asphalt mixtures was lower than that of the control mixture.

Effects of the Mixing Process on the Rheological Properties of Waste PET-Modified Bitumen

This paper analyses the key findings of a study devoted to PET-modified bitumen. The research program was run according to the D-optimal experimental plan based on a factorial design. Five factors, i.e., the type of polymer (source), the type of bitumen (qualitative factors), PET amount, mixing rate, and mixing temperature (quantitative factors), controlled the bitumen–polymer mixing process. The experiment included a series of determinations of bitumen’s rheological characteristics obtained by MSCR (Jnr, R) and G*/sin(δ) at 50 °C, 60 °C, and 70 °C. The low-temperature properties of the composite (critical temperature) were evaluated using a BBR test. The findings showed that bitumen modification with PET primarily reduced the creep susceptibility of the bituminous–polymer mixture. The low-temperature characteristics of the modified bitumen played a secondary but essential role. The amount of polymer and the mixing rate interacted with the temperature, significantly reducing the stiffness of the composite, while the type and amount of bitumen had a substantial effect on the results obtained in the BBR test. It is worth noting that when combining bitumen and plastomer, special attention should be paid to ensuring a high level of homogeneity of the mixture by controlling the parameters of the mixing process accordingly. The tests and analyses provided crucial models (GLM), which allowed for the prediction of the plastomer-modified bitumen’s low- and high-temperature properties. The resulting relationships between factors and the identification of their impact on the bitumen properties enable a better understanding of the process of bitumen modification with PET. The conclusions presented here serve as a basis for future optimisation of the modified bitumen composition. The performed studies indicate that the use of >3% plastomer in bitumen 70/100 allows for a reduction in its susceptibility (MSCR) to below 0.5 kPa−1, making it suitable for bituminous mixtures for high-traffic roads. No significant increase in critical temperature (BBR) was observed.

To decrease the environmental impact of bitumen, more sustainable binders should be proposed. This study emphasizes how industrial humins co-produced during the biorefining of carbohydrates can be employed as a macromolecular binder for bitumen. Humins are heterogeneous polyfuranic compounds, and they were mixed at 50 wt% with bitumen. When the non-water-soluble fractions of humins were employed (Hns), no variation of the chemical structure was observed in FTIR spectra after the mixing. The DSC investigations showed that the crystallization of aromatic fractions in bitumen shifted to higher temperature for humins’ modified bitumen. The thermogravimetric data highlighted that the presence of humins or Hns in bitumen can lead to mass loss below 200 °C. The rheological investigations highlighted some key advantages of using humins or Hns with bitumen. At high temperatures, the storage modulus of the modified bitumen is increased and shows lower susceptibility to variations in frequency. At low temperatures, the phase angle of Hns-modified bitumen is lower than that of bitumen, suggesting less temperature susceptibility as a consequence of a cross-linked network formation.
