The book ... addresses painful trauma, challenges assumptions, and offers insights and hope through the deep bonds between mothers and their children\"--Provided by publisher.
Countering Educational Disparities Among Black Boys and Black Adolescent Boys from Pre-K to High School: A Life Course-Intersectional Perspective
Accounts of educational opportunity gaps for Black boys are overwhelmingly focused on later years of development. Achievement and discipline disparities are evident across their lifespan. Life course and intersectionality theories were used to develop a framework for understanding obstacles Black boys face during their preschool through high school years. Outlining the cumulative impact of threats and protective factors for their academic success provides insight for supporting Black boys at various developmental stages. Implications include tools for families, educators, and practitioners. This perspective will enhance the collective understanding of the resiliency of Black boys and support their educational success throughout the life course.

A Systematic Literature Review of Literacy Development of K-2 Black Boys
Systemic barriers often prevent young Black boys from full development of their potential, including in the area of literacy. This systematic literature review seeks to better understand the landscape of literacy development of Black boys in kindergarten, first, and second grades by answering the question: What does previous literature indicate about how the U.S. education ecosystem impacts K-2nd grade Black boy’s language arts interests and abilities? We used the Khan framework for this review. Searching three academic databases and an expert consultation yielded 46 relevant works, which were analyzed for their framing (i.e., asset- or deficit-based), focal areas, and findings. We identified seven themes across this body of work: literacy skills assessment, the impact of the use of Black English, inclusive and culturally relevant curricula, interventions and pedagogical approaches, professional development, student engagement, the research agenda. Our findings support an asset-based approach that emphasizes the abilities of young Black boys to flourish academically when appropriate support is provided. The Role of Teacher–Child Relationship Quality in Black and Latino Boys’ Positive Development
The present study examined boys’ race in moderating the association between teacher–child relationship quality, measured by closeness and conflict, and boys’ language gains and conduct problems change scores during Pre-K. The study was conducted using data from the National Center for Early Development and Learning’s (NCEDL) Multi-State Study of Pre-Kindergarten and the NCEDL-NIEER State-Wide Early Education Programs Study (SWEEP Study). Participants were 1,228 boys in 660 pre-K classrooms. On average, pre-K teachers had closer relationships with White boys than Latino boys and more conflictual relationships with Black boys than boys of other races. The results from the moderation analyses suggest that close teacher–child relationships serve as a promotive factor for Latino and Black boys’ teacher-reported language gains. Simultaneously, teacher–child relationships characterized by high levels of conflict predicted larger change scores in conduct problems for Black boys compared to boys of other races. The findings from this study highlight the impact of teacher–child relationships for the development and learning of boys of color. The present study may inform future professional development efforts to enhance positive teacher–child relationships for children of color in early childhood settings.
Frontier rebels : the fight for independence in the American West, 1765-1776
\"The untold story of the \"Black Boys,\" a rebellion on the American frontier in 1765 that sparked the American Revolution. In Frontier Rebels, historian Patrick Spero tells the story of the Black Boys, a band of rebels whose protests ignited the American Revolution. In 1765, as the Stamp Act riled eastern seaports, frontiersmen clashed with the British Empire over another issue: Indian relations. When British officials launched a risky diplomatic expedition into the American interior to open trade with the Indian warrior Pontiac, the Black Boys formed to stop it. Distrustful of Native neighbors and suspicious of imperial aims, the Black Boys led an uprising that threatened the future of Britain's empire. Clashing with unscrupulous traders, daring diplomats, Native warriors, and imperious British officials, the Black Boys evolved into an organized political movement that resisted the Crown years before the Declaration of Independence. A fast-paced read examining an overlooked conflict, Frontier Rebels brings to life a forgotten cast of characters and sheds new light on the origins of American Independence\"-- Provided by publisher.
Resisting racism in school
Darius O. Johnson, Briana Markoff, and Dorinda J. Carter Andrews examined data from focus groups conducted with more than 60 Black boys in midwestern high schools to learn how teachers and schools can refuse antiblackness and reimagine futures for Black boys in school. Black boys and young men want safe school environments and will create safe communal spaces when needed. They seek teachers who are culturally relevant; they want to be able to trust their teachers; and they want to be their full, authentic selves at school. Findings show how educators can work within antiblack institutions toward reducing in-school suffering while working to create better futures for Black boys in school.

The need for Black male mentors
The academic achievement of Black boys in the U.S. has been declining, and Black male mentorship can positively change these outcomes. Schools have tried many interventions to help Black boys receive the academic, social, and emotional support they need to close the performance gap. Some case studies have proven that Black male mentorship works. Bobby J. Rodgers Jr. and Devery J. Rodgers examine Black male student academic performance and propose Black male mentoring as a solution that offers promise in closing the performance gap.
