How Does Functional Disability Affect Depressive Symptoms in Late Life? The Role of Perceived Social Support and Psychological Resources
This study examines the process whereby functional disability amplifies depressive symptoms through decreasing perceived social support and psychological resources. The study analyzed two waves of panel data (1986 to 1992) of a large sample of older adults from the National Institutes of Aging Established Populations for Epidemiologic Studies of the Elderly. The results of longitudinal change models and path analyses show that the perceived availability of a confidant, satisfaction with support, sense of control, and self esteem mediate the effects of disability on increments in depressive symptoms in late life. Psychological resources play a dominant role in mediating the effects of functional impairment. Scales of sense of control and self-esteem account for 53 percent of the total effect of baseline disability and 43 percent of the total effect of changes in disability on changes in the CES-D depression scale. Self esteem appears to be the strongest mediator.

Lane Keep Assist System for Chevrolet Blazer
2020
This thesis presents the design process of a lane keep assist (LKA) system for a hybrid electric vehicle, Chevrolet Blazer. The vehicle is implemented with a P4 Split-Parallel hybrid architecture, the vehicle’s front axle is powered by a GM 2.0L I-4 Turbo engine coupled with a 9-spd automatic transmission and an eRAD motor is used to propel the rear axle. The primary goal of this thesis is to present the construction of a hybrid electric vehicle system model, the development of an LKA system, and the tests and validations of the system. The vehicle system is modeled according to the P4 Split-Parallel hybrid architecture first, and then the LKA system is developed based on the model predictive control algorithm. Afterwards, tests and simulations are conducted through the whole system, which is a combination of the vehicle model and the LKA system. The test results show that the LKA system has the ability to tracking a path with small errors, especially at low and medium speed.

Luminosity–redshift (L−z) relation and the blazar sequence for low power blazars
2014
This paper presents an alternative interpretation for the wide scatter and apparent lack of anti-correlation in the relationship between the spectral luminosity (
L
ν
) and synchrotron peak frequency (
ν
peak
) in a sample of BL Lac Objects contained in Wu et al. (Astron. Astrophys. 466:43,
2007
) compilation. The apparent lack of correlation between the parameters contradicts the blazar sequence proposed by Fossati et al. (in Mon. Not. R. Astron. Soc. 299:433,
1998
), which predicts a general decline in
L
ν
with increasing
ν
peak
. Analysis of the radio luminosity and synchrotron peak frequency data of the sample reveals a strong selection effect, due to Malmquist bias. We show that a clear anti-correlation (
r
∼−0.7) between the radio luminosity at synchrotron peak (
L
peak
) and
ν
peak
exists for the BL Lac sample above some redshift cut-off (
z
c
=0.3), which may correspond to the flux limit of the sample. The results are not only in agreement with FRI–BL Lac unification, but also suggest that the present data is consistent with the blazar sequence.

Intersex condition (ooctyes in testicular tissue) has been documented in many watersheds among a diverse variety of fishes worldwide. However, few studies have tested for the occurrence of the condition in fishes from rivers of the American Midwest. Midwestern watersheds, such as the Illinois River Waterway, U.S.A. may provide important new information about the effects of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) on fishes because of the variety of urban, industrial, and agricultural land uses within the watersheds. A first step in the study of EDCs in any ecosystem is a survey to document the symptoms of EDC exposure, such as intersex condition. Our objective was to test for intersex condition in male largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides in the lower Des Plaines River, an area directly affected by surface runoff and wastewater effluents from the Chicago Metropolitan Area. Histological analysis indicated that testicular oocytes were present in 21 of 51 (41%) largemouth bass sampled and oocyte numbers ranged from 1–25/thin section among intersex individuals. Our study details the severity of intersex in a population of largemouth bass near a major metropolitan area, which represents an important contribution to the understanding of fish reproductive ecology in ecosystems with a history of environmental disturbance and recovery such as the Illinois River Waterway.

The evolutionary sequence of Fermi blazars
2014
Using
γ
-ray data (
α
γ
,
F
γ
) detected by Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) and black hole mass which has been compiled from literatures for 116 Fermi blazars, we calculated intrinsic
γ
-ray luminosity, intrinsic bolometric luminosity, intrinsic Eddington ratio and studied the relationships between all above parameters and redshift, between
α
γ
and
L
γ
. Furthermore, we obtained the histograms of key parameters. Our results are the following: (1) The main reason for the evolutionary sequence of three subclasses (HBLs, LBLs, FSRQs) may be Eddington ratio rather than black hole mass; (2) FSRQs occupy in the earlier, high-luminosity, high Eddington ratio, violent phase of the galactic evolution sequence, while BL Lac objects occur in the low luminosity, low Eddington ratio, late phase of the galactic evolution sequence; (3) These results imply that the evolutionary track of Fermi blazars is FSRQs ⟶ LBLs ⟶ HBLs.

Twenty-first Century Writing Center Staff Education: Teaching and Learning towards Inclusive and Productive Everyday Practice
2015
This study takes up questions of how to best orient staff to issues of difference, especially the question: How do writing center educators facilitate tutors' development of inclusive multi/trans-cultural, -lingual, and -literacy perspectives and practices? Results indicate that developing deliberate approaches allows us to see more clearly the possibilities for a cohesive, transformative staff education pedagogy. Some approaches supporting the transformative ethos can be characterized as follows: discussion (as a staff; in small groups; one-with-one); writing on private staff blog; reading scholarship (as a group and independently); developing resources (as a staff; in small groups; independently).

The News: a video-opera by Jacob ter Veldhuis; Nederlands Blazers Ensemble, two singers and film UrWald: new music-theatre by Arnoud Noordegraaf; Niewe Amsterdams Peil Ensemble, actor and film Muziekgebow aan 't IJ, Amsterdam (October 2013)
2014
The Amsterdam contemporary music scene has long been known for its open-mindedness and willingness to explore, and any given evening can be a toss-up between electronic clog dance (served with soup) or piano-playing dogs. A petri dish of creativity, this is given a podium and a voice by the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ. This edifice of concrete and glass, moored like an industrial spaceship on the banks of the river IJ, is branded in English as the ‘Concert Hall of the twenty-first century’, and indeed their flavourful mix of programming celebrates the more unusual sides of classical music, from the very old to the very new, from Gesualdo consorts to dirty electronics.
