Intrapuparial Development and Age Estimation of Calliphora grahami

Calliphora grahami (Aldrich, 1930) (Diptera: calliphoridae) is a forensically important blow fly that is widely distributed across Asia, North America, Russia, and Mexico. Calliphora grahami is frequently found on corpses during the spring, autumn, and winter seasons. It is among the early colonizers of cadavers during the cold season, and sometimes, the only necrophagous blow fly on cadavers. Therefore, this species is of forensic significance, although very few studies have explored the application of its intrapuparial age for PMI estimation. This study aimed to examine the intrapuparial development of C. grahami and establish a method for estimating its intrapuparial age. Herein, the C. grahami puparia were studied under six different temperatures (13, 16, 19, 22, 25, and 28[degrees]C) for the intrapuparial age estimation, and a total of 5776 puparia were sampled. The morphological changes were divided into 11 stages based on the 1) development of legs and wings, 2) differentiation of the head, thorax, and abdomen, 3) growth and color of the bristles, and 4) color changes of the compound eyes. The corresponding time of each stage was determined. Moreover, the observation and classification of individual morphological features, including compound eyes, antennae, mouthparts, thorax, abdomen, legs, and wings was used to improve the precision of intrapuparial age estimation. The findings of this study provide important information on the use of C. grahami intrapuparia to estimate the minimum postmortem interval (PM[I.sub.min] ).

A Preliminary Study of Necrophagous Flies , China

Lhasa is located on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, with an altitude of 3,650 m, and a unique geography. Its climate is dry and cold all year round. Forensic entomological studies of the region are scarce. In this study, the diversity and seasonality of necrophagous flies in eight counties among Lhasa region were determined, and succession of necrophagous flies colonizing on rabbits in the Chengguan area of Lhasa was studied, so as to provide reference data for estimating postmortem interval (PMI) and location of death. In total, 22 species of necrophagous flies, belonging to six families were identified in Lhasa. Protophormia terraenovae (Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) was the dominant species throughout the year, the diversity index (4.5834) indicated that the study on necrophagous flies in the Lhasa region is representative. Life Cycle of Chrysomya rufifacies
Adult Calliphoridae flies, as well as their immature stages collected from carcasses, have been used as evidence in forensic investigations to estimate the postmortem interval (PMI), particularly those of the genus Chrysomya as it is one of the first genera to colonize a corpse. Chrysomya rufifacies (Macquart 1842), due to its appearance in cadaveric remains, plays a fundamental role in the study of forensic entomology. For this reason, we determined the biological cycle of C. rufifacies under semicontrolled laboratory conditions: uncontrolled average fluctuating temperature of 29. 76 [+ or -] 3. 22[degrees]C, uncontrolled average fluctuating humidity of 48. 91 [+ or -] 11.13%, and a controlled photoperiod of 12/12 (L/O). We established that the total development time from oviposition to adult emergence of C. rufifacies was 6. 5 d. The eggs took 12 h to hatch after oviposition. The complete larval stage took 60 h (instar 1 = 12 h, instar 2 = 12 h, instar 3 = 24 h, instar 3 post-feeding = 12 h). The pupa had a duration of 84 h. The species needed a total of 4642.8([+ or -]4.59) accumulated degree-hours (ADH) to complete its biological cycle.

Biological, Ecological, and Distributional Aspects of Two Native Species of Lucilia Genus

This study determined the spatial and temporal dynamics of two native neotropical species flies of forensic interest, belonging to the Lucilia (Robineau-Desvoidy) genus. The study focused on their abundance and reproductive behaviors associated with different habitats and phenological parameters. In the Province of Salta, Argentina, monthly samplings were performed over 1 yr in urban, rural, and native habitats, at morning, midday, and afternoon periods, controlling the oviposition of captured specimens. Environmental variables were also assessed: cloudiness, precipitation, relative humidity, temperature, and tree cover. Lucilia purpurascens (Walker) appeared to be associated with native habitats, whereas Lucilia ochricornis (Wiedemann) was mainly associated with rural habitats, exhibiting distinct habitat preferences. Two ecotones were also identified: ruralurban and rural-native, suggesting rural habitats promoted habitable conditions at its margins. Both species were recorded at the end of winter to the middle of autumn, with an initial peak in early spring, and a second peak at late summer. These peaks were associated with the highest numbers of laid eggs. Lucilia purpurascens preferred high tree coverings, whereas L. ochricornis resisted areas with intermediate sun, suggesting limited sun exposure was important. The latter was also associated with daily flight activities; during the warm season, the densest catches occurred at morning and afternoon periods, whereas during the cold season, they occurred at mid-day. Climatic variables explained 77% of variability in terms of abundance and oviposition. Synergistic effects were observed between these variables, suggesting that these variables conditioned insect distribution and reproduction, and not just temperature per se.

Characterization of the Volatiles' Profiles of the Eggs of Forensically Relevant Lucilia sericata and Phormia regina

The attraction of necrophagous insects, particularly blow flies, to corpses and carrion is of ecological, economic, and agricultural importance, although the mechanisms by which it occurs are not well understood. Much of the published research on blow fly attractants has focused on volatiles emitted from carrion surrogates, but little attention has been given to the possibility that blow fly eggs themselves may emit chemical cues that are responsible for conspecific and heterospecific insect attraction. In this study, the headspace volatiles emitted from eggs representing two aggregated oviposition events that were collected 1 mo apart from two species of the Calliphoridae family (Order: Diptera), Lucilia sericata (Meigen), and Phormia regina (Meigen) were analyzed via solid-phase microextraction-facilitated GC-MS. The volatiles' profiles were found to be consistent between samples representing the same species, but unique between the two species. Over 100 molecules covering a wide range of compound classes that included alcohols, aldehydes, esters, amines, ketones, and organosulfur compounds were identified. The profile of volatiles emitted from the L sericata eggs contained several alkanes and aldehydes, whereas salient features of the P. regina headspace included numerous esters and ketones. Between the two species, 42 compounds were shared, several of which were carboxylic acids. Little overlap between the range of compounds detected and those reported to be emitted from decomposing remains was observed.

Miyazis, Diptera sinifi larvalarin omurgali doku ve vücut bosluklarini istila etmesi anlamina gelen bir terimdir. Nazal miyaz çogunlukla Sarcophagidae ve Calliphoridae ailesi üyelerinin neden oldugu bir enfestasyondur. Bulasinda birçok predispozan faktörün rol aldigi hastaligin tedavisinde mekanik temizleme ile beraber antiseptiklerin kullanimi tavsiye edilmektedir. Bu olguda, 75 yasinda yogun bakimda yatan bir hastada görülen nazofarengeal miyaz sunuldu. Hastanin burnunda dokuz adet larva tespit edilmistir. Larvalar bölgeden uzaklastirilarak üç gün boyunca bölge %5'lik iodin solüsyonuyla temizlendi. Makroskobik ve mikroskobik incelemeler sonunda etkenin Sarcophaga sp.'nin üçüncü evre larvalari oldugu belirlendi. Miyaz enfestasyonlarini engellemek için yogun bakim ünitelerini gibi hastanin bilincinin kapali oldugu yerlerde görev yapan personeller hastalarin burun, agiz ve kulak boslugu gibi vücut bosluklarini günlük olarak kontrol etmeli, bakim ve temizligini en uygun sekilde yapmalidir.

Field Validation of a Development Data Set for Cochliomyia macellaria

Insect age estimates can be useful for estimating the postmortem interval when certain assumptions are met. Such estimates are based on species-specific development data that are temperature-dependent and variable, and therefore prone to different degrees of error depending on the combination of data sets, calculations, and assumptions applied in a specific instance. Because of this potential error, validating the methods employed is necessary for determining accuracy and precision of a given technique. For forensic entomology, validation of development data sets is one approach for identifying the uncertainty associated with insect age estimates. Cochliomyia macellaria (Fabricius) is a primary colonizer of remains across the United States and is commonly encountered in forensic investigations. A development study for this species was produced for a central Texas, U.S. population; the variation associated with this data set and the pre-appearance interval were previously explored in an ecological model.The objectives of this study were to determine the accuracy of the development data and the validity of the ecological model when applied to immatures of known age developing under field conditions. Results indicate this data set is an accurate predictor of insect age when using development stage, supporting the validity of the ecological model in centralTexas. Age predictions made with all stages present in a sample were more accurate than predictions made with the most developed stage in a sample, and estimates of age when using the prepupal stage were overestimated regardless of prediction method, though thermal requirements for total development were similar.

Spatial and Seasonal Distribution of Forensically Important Blow Flies

The seasonal activity of adults of eight forensically important blow fly species [Calliphora croceipalpis (Diptera: Calliphoridae), Jaennicke, Lucilia sericata (Meigen) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), L. cuprina (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), Chrysomya chloropyga (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), Ch. albiceps (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), Ch. marginalis (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), Ch. putoria (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), Ch. megacephala (Fabricius) (Diptera: Calliphoridae)] was quantified from collections in Makhanda, South Africa. Flies were collected in traps baited with chicken liver and placed in the field at eight locations for four consecutive days each fortnight for 14 mo. The seasonal distribution of each species compared well to published seasonal distributions of these blow flies elsewhere in South Africa, with evidence of year-to-year variation within seasons that might be explained by weather. This information is important for determining when and where certain species are likely to occur and will be of use in forensic investigations and myiasis management plans.

Morphological and Molecular Characterizations of ICochliomyia hominivorax/I Larvae Responsible for Wound Myiasis in French Guiana

Myiasis is an ectoparasitic infection caused by the larvae of true flies (Diptera). We came across a rather rare case of myiasis in an immunocompetent 34-year-old man from French Guiana with advanced wound myiasis masquerading as cavitary myiasis and a history of cholesteatoma surgery in the left ear. The Diptera larvae responsible for the disease were isolated and identified using morphological and molecular approaches as Cochliomyia hominivorax. We underline the importance of this parasitosis as the second case of myiasis caused by C. hominivorax and the first case of wound myiasis in this overseas department of France and its incidence in pre-urban areas of the capital, Cayenne, in South America.
